In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Eli Cohen (1924-1965),an extraordinary Israeli intelligence officer and spy who made a lasting impact on the history of the Middle East. Born in Egypt, he immigrated to Israel and joined the Mossad, Israel's national intelligence agency.
Cohen's most notable achievement was his successful infiltration of Syrian society in the 1960s, where he assumed the identity of a wealthy Arab businessman named Kamel Amin Thaabet. Operating under this alias, Cohen gained the trust of high-ranking Syrian officials and influential figures, providing Israel with critical intelligence on military movements, political developments, and strategic plans.
During his time undercover, Cohen orchestrated a network of informants and developed close relationships with key individuals in Syrian politics and military circles. His reports to Israeli intelligence were invaluable in bolstering Israeli defences and preparing for potential conflicts. He even influenced decision-making processes within the Syrian government, further enhancing Israel's position.
However, Cohen's undercover mission came to an abrupt end when he was arrested by Syrian authorities in 1965. Despite international efforts to secure his release, Cohen was subjected to a highly controversial trial and was ultimately executed.
