We used to live on top of the Commonwealth Bank (at 6.20) in the 60’s. Our father was the manager of the Bank. There’s 3 stories at the rear and my mother had a basket on pulleys to save carrying the washing up the stairs. Unfortunately the huge macadamia (bauple) nut tree that was in the backyard is now gone. We used to walk to Milton State school taking a shortcut through the grounds of the Marist Bros, Rosalie.
Hi Rob I'm slowly watching your content, it is truly fabulous, it provides entertainment, information & is guide to locals & visitors Keep up the great programming - Tom
Moved into Milton right on the edge of where it crosses into Paddington a little while ago and it was a delight seeing the walk through so many familiar streets that I see on the daily with a bit of local history packed into it. Love your work Rob, you're an asset to SEQ's local history! I'll have to repeat this walk sometime in the near future.
Hi Rob. I got my driving licence at Rosalie in the early 70’s. Hated doing hill starts there. It looked like you were walking under water where all the antique lights were hanging in The Empire theatre antique store. The lights looked like a school of jellyfish.
Loved the episode mate. I grew up in Paddington and my family still lives there. Lucky enough to buy in the 80s when it was a workers suburb. Brought back some memories for me man thank you.
Those garden beds along Fernberg Rd, (eg where you pointed out Legacy way underneath you), were built for a Royal visit as they drove up to Government House.
I was there the day the Paddington Tram Depot was burnt down. My great grandfather used to own a shoe repair shop directly over the road. Those Paddington hills sure haven't got any flatter since I was a child, especially Cochrane St and Great George Street. My Dad used to go to that St Barnabas Church on Waterworks Road. I'm not interested in sport either. I was there just the other day. Thanks for the great video.
Love your vids. I lived in Rosalie around 1984. Hale st was just a street like most. The first good coffee was found at Aroma's on Hale. An old couch and nice time. My daughter worked in the la Boite Theatre when it was in Hale. Paddo hasn't changed much in 40 odd years. Cheers buddy. Hope you manage to keep these coming. From Oregon USA
Lots of the shops on latrobe terrace have been vacant since before covid, I think its the rents. Places dont seem to last if they havent already been there for years.
Hi Rob I am 4 videos in and I am really enjoying them. I drive all these streets for work but you show me a different view. I grew up in bardon so this is my favourite so far. Your historic information is awesome and my mate thinks I'm so smart because of you... I'm looking forward to going back through the last year of all your hard work and sharing it with my friends. Mike
ooh i loved the rainy day feel, so not typical and so nice that you didn't wait for the perfect weather but pushed on regardless. I like the authentic feel of that! We live in terrific suburb full of trees and old buildings dotted in between the modern.
@Christine Butler I really miss living in Paddington. Having been away for many years it was nice to come back and see it with fresh (rain soaked) eyes. Thanks indeed for watching.
I watched the moving og graves next to the church on Hale St in 1990 for the Hale St and Lang Park extension. I live in in Sherrif St and Heusler terrace. Fabulous area.
I lived around Paddington for many years and even though I now live on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, I still miss my old stomping grounds sometimes. That yellow house you showed in the opening sequence used to be a notorious brothel back in the late 70s early 80s when Petrie Terrace and Paddington were far from the chi chi inner city suburbs they now are
Good onya Rob love your shows mate most weeknights I try to put one on before the news, I’m really interested in Brisbane before it was Brisbane and I appreciate that you touch on it every show, the indigenous tribes must of definitely found paradise, not that I don’t appreciate modern life and were we are but our generation will never the paradise that was. Good onya mate 👍
@Duncan Inglis thanks so much for your awesome feedback. Always happy to know that people enjoy my work. Yes things have changed so much and will go on changing forever. I do try to imagine what the city and surrounds were like just before European settlement.
Great video again, Rob. I've been to Paddington a couple of times since I came back to Brissie. A friend shouted me dinner at Gambaro's because I used to talk about how good it was...'was' is now the operative word I think...very lacklustre meal. The other few times I've been is specifically to go to Retro Metro. A very cool shop.
……on a school trip, had been visiting an historic building at Bardon. Catching tram back, from Bardon terminus, we passed the newly burnt out Paddington Tram Depot………
Thanks for doing this - I'd never seen inside of the Antiques shop, amazing blue roof and old theatre proscenium (and the cool car headlights couch at the cupboard under stage). I actually loved that you persevered filming despite the rain as I think it beautifully adds to it; maybe all tours should be rainy day tours lol. interesting to learn about the tram depot location, and nice finish with the beer
@D Shack thanks so much for your comments. And yes indeed, the rain actually added something rather charming to the whole journey, rather than being a hindrance. Am setting off on Sunday for a new adventure.
thank you for the great vide. Some how you manage to pull my heart string...about two years ago i became homeless and camped around brisbane ..i have a very close relationship with Brisbane . at the time all i had was my bicycle .it was stolen from pado ..didnt happen to see a old Norco mountain bike .haha just joking that bike would be long gone ..thanks again man.
I moved to Paddington 12 months ago. It was great watching you walk the streets that I know and love. Thanks for the insights into some of the history of the area.
I enjoy the calmness of your videos, they are understated and yet interesting to watch, I don’t live in Brisbane but it doesn’t seem to make any difference to the stories you tell
My parents grew up around Red Hill. Mum and dad met through his brother and his girlfriend I think. Pretty sure they all lived in Haughton Street. I can always remember heading there to visit our grandmother and there was a shop on Kelvin Grove Road that burnt down, and it sat as a burnt-out shell for some years. I'm enjoying your travel docos of Brisbane, Rob. They bring back childhood memories. I'm not sure if I mentioned it but I sometimes watch State Archive videos of places I know and load up the 'Queensland Globe' satellite page and compare the then and now differences. Weird huh? I'll get out and about again one day. Six years ago I was walking up to 20 kilometres or so a day just for fun. I need to start doing that again. One of the nicest walks I did was from Scarborough harbour to the old fish co-op on Cabbage Tree Creek, behind the Sandgate Golf Club, and back. I remember all that area from my early teens.
I loved this...the rain, the music and of course your running commentary. I have probably about 1000 DVDs that I bought when a Blockbuster closed too 😊 I laughed at the bombastic side eye when you were trying to eat 😂
@shelleigh5993 It was actually quite a nice change of pace to do a walk (though a simple one back in those days) to do it in the rain and grey. And yes, those horrid people sat at the very next table while I was having my lunch. What were they thinking?! How dare they! Artist at work!
I've just watched this again. My Dad was born in paddington in 1932 and lived in long st as a child. He was very poor and had no bedroom. He went to Ithaca creek school. Did moved here to New zealand when he was 26. My great grandfather was a Tram conductor
Rob, confused by the "Death & Desire" in the title. I had heard that there was a thriving sex trade in Paddo at some point in the past but the when and where I don't know. Love your walks - especially of places I know, there is always something new to me and I'm sure you get lists of things you've 'missed'. Cheers,
Great video, special request city of down fail creek (now known as chermside) they've got an historical society centre located behind Westfield chermside for a source of reference
I did the council's historical walk through here several years ago. Did you know there used to be a monastery? I think it's now part of a school. That Empire Theatre building is the best, must go back for another browse, I didn't find that downstairs area!
@Fiona Ottley I know of the old Marist Brothers college and other religious buildings within the area, and certainly would have liked to swing by, but time was getting short and I had to choose what to go see and what to miss. As for the hidden little place in the antique centre, I think it might be a fairly recent addition as I don't recall ever having seen it on previous visits, though those were years ago.
@@walkaboutwithrob I recently went to see my old high school, Marist Brothers at Rosalie and it's no longer a high school, however, the monastery is still being used by the Brothers I was told.
I visited the Empire Revival a few years ago with my daughter. I had the strangest feeling while walking around and I said to my daughter, I think I’m going to see something here that used to belong to me. Within minutes we turned a corner and there on a mannequin was my formal dress from 1977; this would have been about 5 years ago that I saw it. It was the same size and same colour. The hair stood up on my arms when I saw it. So that’s my Paddington story.
Would have been nice to have the st Frances theological College included my parents n I used to work and live there for a while I had also went to Milton State school
@Fillapa Gilloway yes it would have been nice for it to be included. It is very difficult - actually impossible - to include every element of a region or suburb. I try to offer a balance of places, stories, architecture, anecdotes and discovery in each video. Some things are featured, other are not. If I was doing a two hour documentary then I could certain include a lot more.
@@walkaboutwithrob yes I think it’s better Paddington in Qld then Sydney only because they kept there old dwellings. Not like Sydney. I know the terraces are still there. In Sydney the local governments are filling our sky’s with highrises and I am just one person who like this kind of progress. I notice in your videos of suburbs of QLDs the local government have left the old places ly with the new .
I too have no interest in sport. And the Paddo was such a dire place by night. Drunk, leery thugs pouring out all through the evening. Dangerous as hell to walk past.
Thank you, I'm glad you evaded the spiders and magpies.
You're videos are simply amassing. You're a great filmmaker and storyteller. I'm learning so much about the city I live in. Keep up the great work!
They're amazing too. 😁👍👍
excellent!...great to see local vernacular content for a change

The architecture in Paddo is second to none. Shame that they're so flammable once they get heritage listed.

My nanna lived on bowler st, I remember going with her to the old soldiers barracks across the road to help the men out.
Love the videos, Rob. When you said “hey Siri, what’s the temperature?” my phone responded with 12° in Chermside. Gave me a laugh.
It happened often to me when I was editing it.
I love your videos, very calming and informative, love Paddington but those hills must've been a killer! lol
Ha ha lucky he was mostly walking along the ridge lines so pretty easy
The Martin Zero of Brisbane. Thanks for this great series. I love the history of Brisbane and great to see it being explored.
