I am an LGBT+ historian in North America and to clarify with the gay side character--that whole interaction was so common during WWII. Knowing gay people existed or to even "come out" was both unheard of and a death sentence. For the gay character to tell Al anything at all meant he might have thought he was also gay ("gaydar" comes from a time period where you literally had to figure out who was also gay in a time where being out was the least safe thing you could be). They didn't have the language at the time, "gay" wouldn't be truly attributed to gay folks until after the war. There was just homosexual (nearly always derogatory) and heterosexual. Homosexual was even partially defined by beastiality at this time.
Gay people always ran the risk of being removed from their place of work, killed, or entirely rejected by society, basically, lose everything. It was also extremely common for the "known" gays to be white men. Early North American movements were run by white men who had a lot of privileges other than their sexuality. With some exceptions in the United States like Harry Hay who was a socialist and being tracked by the government for being a communist spy basically his entire life, they were often pretty racist guys. In the United States, black gay men were welcome, but not really. In the accounts of them trying to join early gay (also known as homophile at the time) movements tells us how extremely uncomfortable they were and the covert racism they faced at meetings and the overt racism that was done behind their backs. So that interaction was... extremely historically accurate. That is how it would have been at the time. In fact, Al had a pretty mild reaction just given what you've said. Historically speaking, it should have gone a lot worse.
There's a book that focuses on the American comic book industry during the same time period that has a tragic, but very realistic depiction of being gay. It's a parallel story to the creators of superman with a lot more drama thrown in. It's: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon (I think that's how the last name is spelled?). It's been awhile since I read it, but to my memory it's pretty alright. The history stuff is pretty accurate, especially the gay stuff, despite how tragic it is.

If parents aren’t paying attention to what their kids are bringing home from school or the library need to be punted. I had a lot of freedom as a child, but my mom still knew what I was reading. I was reading Stephen King and Anne Rice when I was 12. Heck, Thomas Harris was a favorite (still is). But no other kid my age was reading anything about Hannibal Lector. Yeah, I’m sensing a theme here. Still rings true. Heck, I read Relic and Reliquary when I was 11, I believe.

Do you know what happened if I brought home a book from the library my parents didn’t want me to read? They told me they didn’t want me reading it yet (the giver, and the uglies series) my mom went with me to the public library and we talked to the librarians together about what books they recommended for my age and reading level. If I read something I didn’t understand, my parents talked to me about it, they fostered a love of reading and learning that gave me the freedom to do so, and to come to them if I needed help. I was assigned where the read fern grows in 4th grade. I talked to my mom about it because it was the first book that scared me, and made me cry (and still haunts me) and my mom talked to me about it, talked to my teacher about it, and I read it, and while I didn’t particularly like it, I’m glad I read it and got that experience out of the way.

It's not a graphic novel, but I thought I'd mention a historical fiction book set in Korea that really spoke to me when I was in grade school. It's called Year of Impossible Goodbyes by Sook Nyul Choi, and it's the story of a girl called Sookan and her family, navigating Korea during and after WW2. It deals with Japanese occupation and oppression of Koreans, the introduction of Communism to North Korea and the eventual split into North/South Korea.
It remains one of my favourite children's books, and I loved it when I was young because it was heavy and sad and I had never read anything else about that part of the world at that point in my life.

It's not related to graphic novels, but I think you might like to look at Memoirs of a Bookbat by Kathryn Lasky. It was a favorite of mine as a kid, and it's about a kid with fundamentalist parents who secretly reads books they disapprove of. It's basically the bookbanners' worst nightmare written as a good thing--a kid reads what she wants without her parents realizing, doesn't agree with their ideology, and escapes the life they had planned for her. It meant a lot to me as a weird reader kid growing up in a conservative town with a parent who drifted in and out of different ideologies but always disapproved of contradiction.

The thing about banning books from school libraries is that kids are no longer allowed to read them in school at all. So even if their parents do provide them copies of the books on the ban list, if a teacher sees them reading their own copy, it can be confiscated. So banning it from a school library bans it from being in the school at all. And then if kids get it from a public library, then these same people will get upset and demand they remove it from there also. It never stops where they say it does.

Historical Fiction Graphic Novel? Magneto: Testament. Yes, Magneto from the X-Men. The book barely shows any powers - the author and illustrator didn't want to imply Magneto's survival was due to his powers. But it follows kid Magneto from the rise of the Nazi regime through his teenaged years, the loss of his family, his time in Auschwitz, meeting Magda (Romani woman who was his first wife), and all the horrors he suffered. It's beautifully written and illustrated, and makes me cry every time. The hardcover edition comes with a discussion guide and teaching guide at the back, along with an interview with the author about how he worked out the story, and the choices he made in giving Magneto the past he did. I recommended it to my school librarian not long after it came out (I teach in a public high school), but I never did find out if it was purchased.
