Which led to the game taking too long. So they had to get the game out at least on the PvP side. Bobby is to be blamed there mostly and given his track record recently, it doesn't surprise me.

I was one of those players that was looking for a PvE experience. I was really excited for PvE. For context, my friends and I routinely made the leaderboards for Overwatch 1's archives and Junkenstein missions. Every year we would wait in anticipation for the PvE content to drop, then play for hours every day. We'd set timers and stopwatches at key points to get max score bonuses. We loved PvE. It's a different kind of fun to PvP. It was disheartening to see that we weren't getting PvE at all on launch. But I really do think Overwatch 2 has enormous potential to be a great PvE platform, and am hopeful that they'll nail it. Though I am also somewhat pessimistic about how it will be monetized. We'll see.

Of course, if they trashed out the PvE and said "You know what, this is it, this is OW2 as a whole, sorry for the high hopes guys" I would understand the disappointment, but they essentially just phased the release, and that's ok imo. But in 2019 they showed actual gameplay and a mission, showed entire character skill trees, and now it has been YEARS since this and they are scrapping almost all of it. After 4 years of work after they have shown the PvE mode. Blizz fumbled hard on this one

  • @therealzahyra

I wholeheartedly agree. I think they soccumbed to the pressure. I want the PvE to be at my own pace. If I want to binge play it all the way to the end, I should be able to. Having it tied to the PvP seasons will just kill it for me. I was really looking forward to this story based RPG, I've been part of the playerbase asking for an RPG since I got my hands on OW and found the animations of the lore absolutely stunning. It's disappointing to think they gave up on making a complete, immersive triple A game and decided instead to publish it in pieces with the PvP seasons... they shouldn't have anything to do with one another except for voiceline references to the PvE and hero design. That was the original vision, that is how it should have stayed

Maybe it's just because i'm older and now my tastes are different from when i was just 18yo, but i fell like the magic that made me love this game so much vanished.
It's an insult to call this a sequel, i would call it more like a "massive update", that the devs made to relaunch this nearly dead brand with the least efford possible.
They could do everything but they just chosed the safest way and i personally don't want to invest my time in a game that even its devs don't care about it.

@@Mr_Mistah honestly this is worse than Fortnite. people give Fortnite a ton of shit but while I have my problems with it, you get far more value than OW2 provides. a typical $20 bundle in Fortnite gets you a skin (reminder that fortnite is 3rd person), a back bling, a glider, a gun wrap (gun skin), sometimes bonuses like banner icons and wallpapers,, and usually an alternate look for all of these. Overwatch 2 gives you...a single skin. that you can't even see minus the gun. for the same price. in a hero based shooter where you won't be seeing that skin all the time because they aren't universal.
the Battle Passes? Fortnite gives you about 6 or 7 sets of items with all the above mentioned things (even things typically only in bundles) as well as music and emotes. thats like 10 or so things? and there's some unrelated original things thrown in as well, and a bonus set that requires quests rather than leveling. All of these things are also noticeable higher quality than skins you find in the shop. (for example, current Season 4 has a tiny bear in a goo-mech). and to top it all off, you get all the money you need to buy the next pass in the current pass.
Overwatch 2 gives you things like a namecard? there's no currency to be found, more valuable things like skins and emotes are scarce, most of it is full of player icons, sprays, and career profiles. all of this for just 2 bucks above Fortnite's passes.

To be honest they showed different types of progression in PvE for each hero in the trailer. What woulda been cool, is if they had some of that in PvP. Like each hero has a perk or a passive they can choose for their Abilities or Ultimates before the game starts. To give examples from the top of my head, Cassidy when he gets a kill with his grenade, all abilities gets a 50% cooldown reduction. Or he can choose to buff his Ult to be uninterrupted and increased damage reduction when in use. Like stuff like that. Each hero would have a different unique play styles depending on what the player chooses. This can add for casual and competitive play in the PVP area. That's just my opinion though, hope they add more stuff soon to appeal to all players. And fix that SMS phone crap

    - Not alot of content on realase for a “sequal”(due to Shifted goal mid development)
    - PvE Cut up amd sold in segments (very difficult/heavly monitilezed)
    In which case I agree!

I don't think they're giving up, they're just getting some revenue for a project that has, on multiple occasions, taken years of development work and balled it up and thrown it away. Also, one aspect I think you're overlooking is the pressure of meeting obligations to Overwatch League Franchisees. Embittered gamers can't sue Overwatch for letting their game die on the vine, but the moneyed up rubes who paid real cash for a OWL team can and *will*.

2:20 that makes it sound like they (for whatever reason, due to studio structure or otherwise) couldn't really release both parts in a reasonable timeframe and had to fall back on releasing it in the same style of live service update a lot of devs are used to anymore.

    Great video Seagull!
Its been a long time since I've heard about OW2's PVE, I thought they might actually fully abandon it. After the hundreds of hours in PvP, I was actually WAY more excited about PvE since it just looked like a more in-depth and refined coop experience compared to previous events. It also looked like a great way to actually tell the story of Overwatch ( sometimes I wondered if the game actually HAD a story worth telling at all). I'm not optimistic, but I'm hoping they make the best game they can.

The video game industry has fully embraced laziness and overcharging for incomplete products while charging extra to complete said incomplete game.
I'm unsure how many people can relate to this comparison, but Resistance 2 on the PlayStation 3 had literally everything that Blizzard is promising for Overwatch 2, and that game was released almost 15 years ago in a fully complete state. A fantastic campaign that could be played co-op; a fun, balanced multiplayer, and a PvE "character progression" mode that could be played with friends or through online matchmaking.
I miss how games used to be made.

      @@willwunsche6940 Its FREE.
Other games earned respect your time more? You mean Fortnite respect people? I dont think so. Developers bust their asses for the community but dont require us to kiss them, they work on this because they love their jobs of making people happy.
There's been a lot of a shit storm at Blizzard. Sexual scandals and court cases. Jeff leaving due to top-management decisions that he didnt agree with. Speaking of which, butthurt people should move their crosshairs to those neckties. Leave the artists of the OW team alone, nothing of this is their fault. None of them have been involved in the sexual harassement lawsuits. Also a pandemic hit the world, production pace was slowed down to a critical level. All of those elements put together could have steered a lot of big studios into developement hell and never actually release shit. But the team pull it off anyways, through drastic changes like delaying the PvE content but then making the PvP free. So among all of the shit they had to go through, you and many other could give them some slack about ''not enough content'', and this includes Seagull, as much as there's many points upon which i also agree. He does have a good look upon this but it remains his opinion and its not pristine gospel.
The quality standard of Blizzard never really disappointed and even with this launch, it still shows. We could give the team a pat in the back and support them a bit more than that. No, the seasonal passes isnt pleasing a lot of people, but how about waiting to see how this goes instead of being bitchy on them?

Put this in conjunction with the fact that the most successful multiplayer games right now are the damn f2p battle royales and that of course, the neckties would steer the direction of the game that way. So to shut down brats who think they should have everything for free, they made it f2p with seasonal passes. What can you do against the whales who inject so much money into CoD Warzone??

Very well made video, and I agree. I've been one of those that have also said the game is disappointing, in part because of how different it is from the game we were promised so long ago. And the thing that really kills it for me is how they really let OW1 out to rust to work on OW2, and it doesn't show. Imho the only way they could have fixed this is from... well, working on OW1. Releasing more new content and letting another team handle PvE.
(I will also say too, the shift to the Battle Pass is awful and no one can take that from me.)

  • @Cloud7050

Maybe I'll have to wait about 2 more years before looking at the game again. I got Covid, and towards the end of my recovery, I gave Overwatch (2) a shot. The game had been in the back of my mind for years, and I'd only ever tried it a few times at friends' places. Now I finally had the means to play it myself seriously.
The core gameplay is insanely fun. Though sometimes you just get bad matchups, bad/toxic teammates. That's inevitable. I played dozens of hours and relatively soon I was getting a good winrate and high kills even as support.
What got me to stop though was the Halloween event bringing an influx of more of those toxic players into quickplay. Also, as I went, I realised that the rewards were way too stingy. I had no hope of ever getting any meaningful rewards in a realistic amount of time, and would just be pressing play over and over as my stats changed. Same problem I had when I tried Fortnite back when it first launched - before seasons even existed, back when everyone was using voice chat, before kids flooded in, when you had really skilled opponents - barely anything to earn unless you pay!
Plus, it's such a massive shame that they didn't release with all that PvE stuff they talked about, which I would've loved to try. Like how I had eyes waiting on Fortnite's PvE mode. I may even like it more than the competitive aspect; they're right. The lore/universe is very appealing.
