My mom worked in the Verizon building from the mid 80's up until the early 90's, during that time it was called "The new york telephone company building". She would take the train all the ways from Nyack NY to the PATH station underneath the world trade center. She has one fond memory of using ropes to get to the Verizon building as she passed through the plaza because the towers created so much wind. Today the building is very much hidden by the one world trade center. But the building remains as a reminder of a time gone by.
I visited the site this September, the South bridge still has the minor scars on the side of it, though they are less obvious compared to the photograph you showed.
Did you know that here in Tulsa, Oklahoma we have a skyscraper called the BOK Tower (Bank of Oklahoma Tower) which was designed by the same architect, Minoru Yamasaki & Associates and built in 1976, who designed the Twin Towers in Lower Manhattan. It's only 52 stories high and looks exactly like the Twin Towers, except the bottom of it. Every time I drive past or to downtown Tulsa I can't help but think about the tragedy that happened on 9/11, very eerie. I took some pictures of it last year at night and what was written on the BOK that I would like to send you. It was very strange and that no one could explain why...
@@briana_patrick I wish I could send you these eerie images that I took with 911 on one side of the building and a big X on the other side. The kicker was this was in the middle of April, not in September...
O’Hara’s is a pub about a block from the WTC complex. It survived the collapse deapite receiving heavy damage. Go there and ask to the see the book, it has photos chronicling that day and the rebuild. Also tons of artifacts from 9/11.
My old office building at 22 Cortlandt Street survived. It was not a very substantial building, just steel and glass. In fact, when I worked there it would sway in the wind, serious. The west wind would funnel between the towers and be directed at '22.' When it was like that elevators would make screeching sounds as they went from floor to floor. After my job moved elsewhere I heard there was a crossbracing added to cut down the sway.
At least 8,000 were dead then. This point bears an interesting question, why the terrorists have chosen such early time to attack the WTC if their goal was maximum damage.
@MassEffectGER because they wanted the planes to have the maximum amount of fuel and those big cross country trips usually leave in the morning and are more likely to hit delays the later it gets in the day time
Some of the tridents still had the aluminium cladding post-collapse, but sadly none of the preserved ones still have it. It would have been good if they left the skeleton wall remaining or returned in the same place, around the memorial pools, to give an even better idea of how big these buildings were.
The You Tube channel called HistoryPal shared a newly released video a few weeks ago showing the inside of the Winter Garden Atriun in the first 24-hour period after the collapse of the towers. The camera pans up to the ceiling from the floor. The metal trellis is remarkably well preserved considering that the behemoths were just feet away; some of the glass panels appear to be unshattered and still in place. And all the palm trees on the inside are still standing.
The story of how St. Paul’s Chapel stood virtually unharmed just blocks away from the WTC complex is the most mindblowing story they told on the tour. It’s like God had his hands around that Church.
It’s been over 20 years since 9/11, but we occasionally hear stories about things found on rooftops and between buildings years or a decade or so later. And I wonder if there are still places where significant amount of dust or other remnants sit undisturbed to this day. You would think there has to be a lot of stuff still out there, as there was so much that spread out blocks from ground zero during the events. Maybe cover some of that in a video?
90 West St is an absolute tank of a building, its practically a 23 story nuclear bunker, a multiday firestorm raged throughout the interiors and there was a deep 8 story gash across the facade, but it remained structurally sound. A beautiful work of art, too, gorgeous detailing. Would be beyond unaffordable to construct something like that today.
When I saw Ground Zero I didnt know the Winter Garden barely peeking through I tought it was a glass building tbe fell on it's side. Now i know it was just the top of it.
90 West Street was the most severely damaged building to have survived 9-11. The Deutsche Bank Building was essentially what 7 World Trade Center would've looked without the fires causing it to collapse. It can be said all the steel-framed buildings performed poorly on that day, although exception can be given for the Towers due to the fact no building in the world could've anticipated the force of impact and fires resulting from a deliberate attack by airliners. While the traditional concrete and masonry buildings performed beyond expectations.
5:55 I looked on google earth and it seems that panels with massive holes like this one were replaced but most of the panels on the north side do still have tiny dings and dents on them
I've wondered what it took to clean the buildings and the streets and sidewalks. What was that process. The amount of dust and small debris was tremendous.
Bell Atlantic (140 West) and the USPS Federal Building (90 Church) sustained (relative as you say) limited damage. They remain standing and usable to this day. The Six '6' World Trade Center building remained standing albeit incurring substantial damage enough for its eventual demolition. A question is why did Building 7 between 140 West and 90 Church, and literally shielded by WTC Building 6...collapse? Remember DG Building 7 is the big piece that finishes the puzzle.
The majority of the damage to the Verizon building was on the east face that was 50 feet away from #7. And the Verizon building was closer to #1 than 7 was.
6 was basically split down the middle with a huge hole in the center. But 4, 5 and 6, while having similar structural approaches as 1,2 and 7, differed in their construction and the weight loads they were supporting. And that makes all the difference when you're looking at the mechanics of a progressive collapse. 7''s collapse is easy as hell to explain and that's been done in numerous videos and articles.
For the last week I have been heavily interested in 9/11 . Such a shocking even . So many more videos can be made . I know this is a massive branch off but a video on America’s retaliation would be somewhat interesting
Im surprised that the lehman brothers building didnt get mentioned. It was the closest non-WTC building to the north tower I believe. My dad worked there. It got damaged pretty badly in some areas, but it did survive
90 West is beautiful. I stayed at the Marriott next door a few years back and had a stellar view of the roof of 90 West and of course WTC 1. Still get weirded out down there though, so much death and despair happened that it feels uncomfortable to me.
1:56 the pieces of steel stuck in the world financial center building really just goes to show how far out the collapse was when the north tower came down. Honestly crazy the world financial center wasn’t damaged more than it was
It’s not complicated how the tridents survived. It’s steel. They didn’t have the effect of jet fuel and burning as they were the bottom of the structure. In that, as bizarre as it sounds, we should be proud the tridents stood. They did exactly what the architects portrayed.
*He didn’t mention that Marriott downtown hotel manhattan looks very similar to the old 7 World Trade Center the had the same shape windows the left side and right side to the building.*
