Poor guy never won a UFC title, and is forgotten by most fans nowadays who remember him more as just another stepping stone for Conor McGregor. I know he took a lot of damage throughout this contest, but this is the scariest version of Aldo we've ever seen imo. It felt like he combined early Aldo with championship-calibre Aldo; throwing everything into every punch and leg kick, and varying up his combinations to go for finishes like WEC Aldo used to, and at times, we also see the calculated Aldo who showcased gorgeous head movement, a wicked jab, blindingly fast counters, and an ability to slow the pace down just enough to force his opponent to fight at his clip. So the fact that Mendes still gave him heaps of trouble is just a testament to 2014 Mendes' skills (and juiciness).
*This is the second time I'm editing this comment because there are some incredibly stupid people on here and I'm shocked by the fact that I even need to explain this to people. So, again, here is what I meant and I'm going to try and explain it as simply as possible for the little kids commenting in here who clearly have no understanding of fighting or the world in general. Here it goes: Aldo began to throw a combination right before the bell rang. As he was executing his combination, one or two punches (I don't remember which nor do I care enough to go back and watch the thing again) landed after the bell. The momentum of the combination drove him forward. He was clearly in the moment and couldn't perceive and react like the people sitting at home watching. Also, there could have been several other factors that could have contributed to the late punches. Factors such as maybe he didn't hear the bell ring? That is perfectly plausible as sometimes it is so defeaning in the arena that people may not even hear the bell. He also could have been so focused on the fight that he simply didn't expect the bell to ring or even paid attention to what was going on around him. Aldo and Mendes are fighting. They are focused on each other. They're not necessarily aware of what is going on around them. They are focused only on each other. I'm sure I'm going to have to edit this again at some time but I hope this clears at least some things for people reading this.

So far, Aldo has a far more impressive record than Connor. You’re a blind fanboy. Damn when aldo had hair he was a murderer now a days he doesnt use all his arsenal like he used to he turned more into a boxer/slugger type since training with boxers
Because he’s old and weathered now. He doesn’t have the mobility and explosiveness that he used to have here. Hence why he’s more of a stationary boxer/striker now. He’s worked on his head movement to compensate the lesser mobility, but with him getting older you can only do so much
@@Kodiak660 I don't know if you have ever boxed, but he was totally focused on the fight, as he saw that all his punches were connecting. Besides, if we speak about "tricks", we should mention that Mendes put his fingers in Aldo's eyes 5 times

Well the two losses to Max Holloway didn't help either. But at least Aldo was constantly able to re-invent himself after a loss and comeback stronger. Now with his recent retirement, most fans will acknowledge that Aldo was not merely a highlight for Conor but a legend of the sport and one of the greatest to ever do it. Aldo is a future Hall of Famer and we're looking forward to his induction.
"left in our Collective MMA memory" speak for yourself mate, do you mean for the short-sighted and ignorant brains out there? Aldo fights like his life is on the line every time and you know you're in for a good time when he fights.

Pretty crazy there was no point deduction for those 2 late punches after the bell in round 1

McGregor was a machine yes, but Aldos career has been far more impressive. Aldo was undefeated for 10 years, mcgregor has lost more than him and never defended a belt. So far, Aldo has a far more impressive record than Connor. You’re a blind fanboy. I love McGregor as a fighter but you gotta respect Aldo....Connor got a lucky punch in that fight and got in aldos head. Doesn’t mean Aldo is bad at all, he’s one of the greatest
Fantastic performance from both fighters. Both showed incredible strength and speed. What a fight!!
after mendez was warned about a possilbe point deduction, jose really took every chance he could to get the ref to react
in my opinion had Mendes had a full camp he beats McGregor.
Mendes won both rounds against Mcregor until he got caught.
Mendes even said afterwards that he went for the guillotine because he knew he couldn’t go all 5 rounds.
Also he’s the only person to knock Volkanovski down. He won both rounds in that fight as well until getting finished.
I know he lost both fights but what my point is, is that he’s probably the best to never have won a belt.
100%
Aldo should have got at least à point déduction he knocked out mendes after the bell

This is MMA. My favorite fight and I think it is the best fight ever in MMA history.
Damn when aldo had hair he was a murderer now a days he doesnt use all his arsenal like he used to he turned more into a boxer/slugger type since training with boxers
Na 3 round Aldo is still deadly. He smoked Stephen's and Moicano. Only lost to the current champ and last champ. He was robbed against Moraes
Because he’s old and weathered now. He doesn’t have the mobility and explosiveness that he used to have here. Hence why he’s more of a stationary boxer/striker now. He’s worked on his head movement to compensate the lesser mobility, but with him getting older you can only do so much

Sometimes is so easy to forget how confident Aldo was...
All that was left in our collective MMA memory is what happened to him during and after the McGregor fight...
Only casuals remember him for the McGreggor loss.
Pre-Conor era, Aldo was a force to respect he won the Featherweight Division twice in 2010 and 2011 if I recall correctly, something which nobody had previously done before. I like Conor but Aldo deserves recognition for his success, likewise with Conor. I really dislike when people shit on Aldo for the 13 second fight with Conor, I reckon Aldo would of flattened Conor if the fight continued but we'll never know now unfortunately.
