    The way they announced who was selected after SFAS was like this:
    They had us form-up behind the old classroom, not far from the DFAC there, and began to call out roster numbers. Those called out were told to make a separate formation next to ours. The thing was that some of the guys whose roster number was called out were some of the ones many of us thought would be selected for sure. They were strong, motivated, fast, etc. But then they would call out the roster number of someone who you knew was terrible. So, none of us had any idea who was selected and who was not.
    After a while, our group got smaller and smaller in comparison to the other group. Then, a member of the SF cadre took the other group away from our small formation and we were just told to stand there. After like what seemed like 20 minutes (but was really like 5 minutes) most of the cadre stood loosely in front of us and one of them looked over at a list on a clipboard, looked back up at us and said, "Well men, you have been selected." There was stunned silence. I think we just wanted to make sure we heard right. Then the same cadre said, "Jesus H. Christ... really guys?! You've have been fucking selected." I turned to an E4 I befriended during the course and we shook hands (consequently, that E4, who was a clerk at an S1 shop prior to SFAS, would later become one of the most professional SF E8s you'd ever meet). Looking back - though it was something like 20 years ago - it seems like it was yesterday. And, the feeling I felt at that moment is something I'd never forget. Good luck to all you candidates. That E4 and I served in the same SF battalion for my entire career. He just retired. De Oppresso Liber!

      Hey man, what were some of the things about the guys that ‘were terrible’ that caused that perception? Thanks

      I don’t even remember where we were, if we were still at Mackall or at Bragg. I didn’t even know what was suppose to go down. We were all sitting in a classroom in front of a podium and one of the TACs comes up to the podium and tells us to be professional and don’t throw a tantrum or lose your mind. If your roster numbers called just get, up go to the back of the classroom and leave the room. Then the commander comes to the podium and starts calling out roster numbers in random order, you start tensing up more and more as the numbers keep randomly being called and subconsciously you start leaning forward waiting to get smacked with disappointment when your roster number is called as you’re wondering if you performed well enough to get selected, But then suddenly everything goes quiet, the commander pauses, then congratulates everyone still there for being “Selectees” then the classroom (Selectees) goes wild congratulating each other and later talking amongst each other How they couldn’t believe so and so didn’t get selected. At least that’s what I heard.

    After being selected in ‘09 my first thought was....seriously? I didnt think it was as bad as it was supposed to be. Small advice for fitness prep...forget hills for prep, find the deepest, loosest sand you can and walk, walk, walk, then ruck, ruck, ruck. Then run, ruck, run. Remember the geography near Mackall is low rolling sand hills, not steep mountains. After a few hundred candidates churn those sand trails they are ankle deep. On the long one, don’t quit, just keep walking, no matter what. Dont let cadre see you rest, lay down, or chill.

    The STAR is no joke. Sorry, that is the land-nav portion he was talking about. As a contractor that used to do what they called "point sitting" at the various points in the "STAR", I can tell you that some of them are in some out of the way places. One of the most difficult ones to find at night is called Jurrasic Park. One of the things that I can tell you is that you NEED TO KEEP A SOLID PACE COUNT. If you do not, you will undershoot or overshoot your point. You will lose precious time trying to figure out where you screwed up once you realize you screwed up. If you think you are close to your point, stop, do a super slow 360 looking around, returning to your original azimuth. Make sure you HAVE ALL OF YOUR EQUIPMENT with you when reporting into a point. Being tired, trying to hurry, fighting the vegetation in a draw and lack of focus will not sit well with the cadre if you lose something. I don't know if they still carry "rubber ducks", but at the time I was working out there they did. I had had candidates show up at my point without their pee-shooter. When asked about it whereabouts, I have heard it was at their last point several klicks back and they only realized they didn't have it until about a klick out from my point, so they decided to keep going and hope for the best.

After graduating HS, I signed my contract and was ready to go! After MEPs, I started having seizures and was no longer able to join... :( 4 years of busting my ass HARDCORE was all for nothing... They talked me into putting a packet together and going even though I planned on getting out. When it was time to go, all 5 had some excuse and didn’t go. I went & made it and still planned on getting out. Last minute I re-enlisted and went through the course, those 5 all were studs but as far as I know never went to SFAS... if it is something you want then just grab you balls and do it!

      If the SFAS is similar to mine during the course they teach you map reading skills, pace count, do a cadre led land NAV orientation, then progress you into a crawl, walk, run land NAV over the next few days. If you have common sense, listen and learn and have a little bit of confidence in the woods you should be fine.

      How did you guys do? January at camp Mackall is cold and not an easy class. I was there in 2000 for 18C FTX and remember seeing the SFAS class freezing their asses off, (we got hit with around 18” of snow and we got stuck out in the engineer base camp for an extra 3 days) if my memory is right only like 20 maybe 30 guys ended up finishing not sure how many of those were selected.

    • @Chiefskingdom58
      @Chiefskingdom58 3 года назад

      Back then camp mackall was a lot different, all the buildings were old white WWII Quonset huts, no nice fancy brick buildings out there like now, think they started building those in ‘07-‘10 timeframe.

      Unfortunately I could never get take 110 GT score. However my last assignment was with 1st group Airborne oda mountain and they were great. I felt apart of the team. Just normal guys but with a great understanding and skill set. It was cool on mission and back at fob because I was apart of them. Easily they could have not accepted me but they made feel as team member. The doc was great because of back issue always was checking on me so was the MSG. Seemed they never slept. One night they to wake me up because some urgent came up and were so polite in getting me up unlike in the infantry. It was hard to keep up because they were not busy they got busy. MSG took aside and he and I went to go shot just for fun and get to know each other but I was honored and learned from him. I learned more and each day on leadership which I took back to my platoon. I wasn't a GB but I am happy to help them in such a small way. I was apart of all aspects of missions. Got me home.

    • @Chiefskingdom58
      @Chiefskingdom58 3 года назад

      Get healthy, train hard but be smart, don’t overtrain and injure yourself worse. Be mentally fit and never quit, more people self-eliminate themselves then you could imagine. Not sure how the course is now, but I’m sure it was similar to when I went, strenuous and demanding obviously but also a fair amount of down time to allow those weak minded people to overthink their performance and weed themselves out of the course.
      Toughen up your feet and know how to take care of and maintain your feet and body. Good foot care and maintenance is actually pretty important in finishing the course. You don’t need to be the fastest runner, but be above average, and have great endurance and easily be able to walk miles and miles with 55lb rucksack. Be prepared to carry way more than that for periods of time with minimal breaks. Have good forearm/grip strength (ability to carry stuff. Surprised me how many struggled and couldn’t keep up due to this.
      I will say that through the duration of the course you probably walk 200-300 miles or more but it is all cross country or on soft dirt/sandy roads. While often hard to walk in soft sandy surfaces it is less taxing on the body as constantly pounding pavement, which causes more foot problems and injuries than the soft sand.

    So, I've heard lots of rough estimates, but figured I'd ask the guy that was there. Lots have said if you're not doing 100 p.u and sit ups with a 12-13 two mile don't waste your time. What were your numbers and do you think those numbers made any significant difference? What was your mileage? Did you bother running/rucking 10-20 miles, or was content at 7 or 8? Just wanting to see if the hype is at all accurate, or if some people just blatantly over trained for the event and it causes them to burn out.

    • @FNGACADEMY
      @FNGACADEMY  3 года назад +40

      the hype is never accurate, just max it... and maxing is not close to 100.. the 13 min two mile is something to be close to, i think max push ups is in the 80's, either way if you have strong suits elsewhere that will matter its not all about the pt test

      It is about being consistent during the entire time at SFAS. If you are the first guy during the first event, be that guy for every event just be consistent. I am not a great runner and have never been but did good with 13:10 and maxed PU and SU. I would train your feet and shoulders the most. I started walking barefoot a lot month before going to SFAS and that helped. Don't get me wrong, it will hurt and you will be miserable either way. At some point everyone breaks physically, at that point you just have to overcome the pain and misery, suck it up, and finish it.

    • @pscottdai
      @pscottdai 3 года назад +10

      While it was '91 when I went through, and there have certainly been changes, the key has always been to give it your all, every day, every event, every minute. Yes, training and prep will help, but you can be the biggest PT stud in the world and still not make it if you are not always giving it your all. When you get there you will note scrawny little guys and psychical freaks both in attendance - each are just as likely to make it as it boils down to your mental fortitude...never quit, never give up. If you keep that mantra in your head at all times you will get through it. There will definitely be times you want to quit, especially during team week but the key for me was tell myself that fine, I will quit, but not until the event is finished so as not to screw over the rest of your team. Then once the event was finished, I would think "yeah that sucked, but it is done so may as well stay around". Approach it with that attitude and you will have a high chance of finishing and being selected.

SFAS is just a long selection course based on physical and mental toughness as well as land navigation and teamwork. SFQC is where you do all the cool guy shit.

AFEES etc and mass testings. Reception station cruits are already freaking out suiciding out AWOL. We get on a bus and end up at the Disney barracks get out and the first thing the DI says is "See that 2 story building? It was 3 stories the last group pushed it down 1 floor HIT IT GIMME 20". (DI the guy with clown shoes and state trooper hat). Then one day half or more leave for their PDS(?) but we aint done yet? Why? lol off to AIT we go. I figured out when march we yelled (left right ) DELTA we are delllllllta yadda yadda. Left right RECON. Everywhere I went was signs "thru these door walk the best blah blah blah" But we saw it all the time so I figured it was BS everyone in the army saw/did. lol I never realized what a badass I was til years later. I caught a LOT of shit as a delta from the reg. army and bleeping lifers. SO prepare for your PDS lifers HATE us. On the mystic side I would say this - when I walk into a store and a guy gets in my face they do not fight me they fight every 7th cav member that ever was. You are an army of one now for life. Farmer's carry. That's all it is. And deadlift your ass off. Low carry sucks but high carry is worse. A lot worse. You can go a lot farther than you think you can but you WILL reach absolute muscle failure. If you're putting out and being an asset to team it's gonna happen. That's why you're on a team, you're being individually evaluated on how you work and perform on a team. The biggest factor in the assessment of your individual performance is your team's performance. Rely on the guys, get a solid rotation down to evenly distribute the work and allow for rest. Shits not complicated, it just sucks.

      Like you said if you’re a team guy the group will work together to excel and finish, but this is also the place for the team to self select out the weak non team guys. We had one guy that from day 1 of team week was not the right fit, eventually the team ate him alive on an event like this (would say more to describe the event but don’t want to expose too much) the cadre saw what was happening and quickly swooped in to give him a few keep up/stay within proximity with the team warnings, then dropped him. On the next event another guy (strong team player) had some severe heat cramps and was struggling, we as a team carried him through the event...he walked with us but carried nothing. Again the cadre saw what was happening and never stepped in to give any warnings. The next day he was recovered and finished the course strong and was selected.

However, if you get selected and go to the course you will need to get a security clearance and become a US citizen. My class had a Canadian and A guy from Ireland, both had to become US citizens before starting the course.
      There are foreign military students (we had a Turkish Officer and two enlisted NCO’s one Macedonian and one Latvian on my SUT & Robin Sage teams) and that go through the course as well. We had several enlisted and a few officers from a handful of countries in my class. They went through the course but were excluded from any training events that were classified. I will say the standards were laxed to a degree for them as well, the Latvian NCO on my team failed land NAV star but still went through the entire course and graduated.

      What they do in OSUT infantry and Scout training is they start off with 35 lbs and 4miles, then 6 miles, then 8 miles, then 12 miles. Work your way into it and make sure you hydrate and stretch!

    • @Chiefskingdom58
      @Chiefskingdom58 3 года назад +3

      Ease into it, and toughen your body. Take care of your feet and like the other commenter said, stretch. I over trained, rucked with 85lbs, ran with the ruck and walked some steep hills. Rucked 4-8 miles several days a week and did a couple 15-20 milers before SFAS. Although it made me tough and I didn’t struggle as badly as some, I feel that isn’t required to do well in the course. Like I said I over trained and rucking the steep hills hurt my calf and Achilles which could have prevented me from going, luckily it wasn’t a bad injury and I was young and recovered quickly. But I could have ruined my chances before even going had it been more serious.
      After a long 22 year career (18 in SF) I can say, screw running with a ruck, maybe in the course if you need to, or in a real world need to move situation, but in training, never! Your knees and back will hate you and remind you of your youthful stupidity for the rest of your life. Be smart in training and smart in life.
      Anyway, train hard but train smart! Stay fit, healthy and mentally tough at all times, much luck to you and your endeavors!

      *Disclaimer I am not military, have never been military, and do not claim to be military.*
      SF is pretty unique in its core purpose. Don't get me wrong there are all kinds of mission sets in each of the SOF groups but speaking about the core purpose of SF. Its to infiltrate into a non-permissive environment, locate an oppressed faction, build rapport with them, train them, and then work with them to overthrow that oppressive regime through unconventional warfare. An ODA is a force multiplier. They train and use indigenous troops to extend their own operational capability. The motto of SF is "De Oppresso Liber". To free the oppressed. You become an expert in unconventional warfare, then get trained into a specialty for your team, cross train with the other team specialties, and then train and fight with indigenous forces. To my knowledge no other SOF unit has such a strong focus on working with indigenous troops or actually learning the strategies for fighting and overthrowing governments.
      If specializing in unconventional warfare and how to over throw governments trips your trigger than SF is your jam. If you just want to kick down doors and throw bang bang switches then theres Rangers or SEALs if you also like diving and flutter kicks. If you like med then go PJ or commo then TACP. I'm rusty on the mission set for Raiders and know very little about the host of other SOF units. I don't think any young man can go wrong in any of these units. The unconventional warfare bit always interested me not to mention tales of green berets in Vietnam so I have a soft spot for SF. For others its the SEALs or Force Recon. This went way longer than I meant it to. Oh well.

      General breakdown I see for MARSOC is direct action, special reconnaissance, and foreign internal defense. AFAIK that overlaps with SF, Ranger, and maybe SEAL mission sets. Essentially kicking in doors, going to spooky places, and protecting/escorting high value foreign individuals. I'm not exactly sure how Force Recon differs but the whole long range patrol stuff always tripped my trigger.
