You'd bet. I've been a fan for years and the fans are all the most dedicated bunch you can find. It's for a handful of reasons, mainly the amount of good content and lore, but it's also because there's something special in the games. No one will deny their flaws, but the writing -Especially the song writing- has a special something. You don't see many RPGs that address and really talk about actual relationships between couples and how that extends to overall society, at least for me that's the best part.

As soon as someone reacts to Ar tonelico songs I get happy again. This series is such a niche gem that it never really got the recognition it deserves. Still can't get over the fact that there are AT LEAST 5 different conlangs in that games universe, of which only one doesn't have a fully realized grammatical structure and dictionary and three of which have their own alphabet. Hell, one of them has two entirely different dialects, effectively making the second dialect its own language and bringing the number up to 6!
Hearing EXEC_PHANTASMAGORIA/. again after so long made me really nostalgic, I was not prepared for that. It was like I was playing the game again and I was watching the credits roll. (I am proud to know I still remembered most of the lyrics though.)
I appreciate all your thoughts on this song (your reaction to the orchestra coming in at the beginning is fun to watch). This song is indeed sung by three characters with the chorus coming in at the end signifying the people of the land joining in their song.
Oooh, I'd really like to recommend basically all of this series' songs, but some are more experimental or chaotic than others. Also that'd be a lot, what with 5 full games, drama CDs and bonus albums. For now I'll recommend Ar nosurge's "Ra Ciel Reincarnation" to you. It's not as... unconventional(?) as PHANTASMAGORIA is but I think with your background you could appreciate what it does and I'd very much like to hear your take on it.

I'll never forget the first time I heard this song after getting the final ending of the game I was in TEARS. It felt like the perfect send off to such an amazing game. The fact that the three singers compose the song based on their experiences through the game and take in everyone's feelings for peace and put them into song just had me bawling during the end credits when this song happens. It's a masterful piece that not many people will hear.

  • @AegisKHAOS

Considering how the first Ar tonelico ends, the uplifting sound and sense of peace is appropriate. The biggest things that stand out in the Ar tonelico universe are the world building and the music. The universe revolves very much around music, to which the game has its own made up language, and that the magic in the universe happens to be the vocals in the game. What I even said there is an oversimplification. The world building and its science makes for an incredible read.
That said, I love Phantasmagoria to death, but to echo another commenter, this song wouldn't be my first choice to listen to, nor even my second. The Purger/Paja themes (especially Misha's version), Chronicle Key, or all the Singing Hills from all three games (which are the intro themes) are far better examples of the Ar tonelico hymmnos to check out IMHO.

  • @14112ido
    @14112ido 2 года назад +29

Phantasmagoria is the ending song of Ar Tonelico, so that feeling of everything coalesces together before fading away you felt was quite fitting. It also tells me that Akiko Shikata did a really good job with this song.
I’m very happy that you listened to more Ar Tonelico songs. There are a lot of great songs throughout the series. For some context, in Ar Tonelico they have song magic and beings who are artificial/synthetic humans called Reyvateil that can utilize it. They live in these futuristic, continent sized towers that are regulated by said song magic in the same way a computer is controlled by a program (hence the Exec_ part of the song name).
From the Ar Tonelico Wiki: "This is the last Hymn crafted during the course of the game, containing the feelings and wishes of everyone in Sol Ciel. Its effects include causing an orbital readjustment on the Tower to give to it and its surrounding areas a favorable weather, normalizing the functions of the Tower, and amplifying the positive thoughts in the minds of the Reyvateils to make them kinder towards the humans and to each other"
I love Ar Tonelico. Chronicle Key being a personal favorite of mine from the same game in the series as this one. EXEC_HARMONIUS is another big one that heavily involves the main antagonist of the game.
I would also recommend checking the lyric video for future songs if you aren't already in this series, as many of them feature a made of language specifically made for the game's setting.

The Ar Tonelico series uses Japanese and a Constructed Language for their songs.
Hymnos, in lore, is the name of said conlang which is equivalent to computer code for the magic of their universe. Each region of their world has differences in their "programming code" depending on their corresponding Tower the singers (Reyvateil) are "attached to" and what they mean to do with said magic.
Singing Hill (Utau oka) is one song that is repurposed and re-written for every game as an Opening, something of a "Once upon a time..." to set up for the corresponding game's location and story focus (Harmonics Eoria, Harmonics Frelia & Harmonics Tillia. It also has variants to expand on the mythos of the world (Harvestasha).
In AT3, Ec Tisia is a song that compiles all three Singing Hill openings and adds to it as a closing to the story.

Huh. I would not have started on EXEC_PHANTASMAGORIA. Not that it isn't a good song, but that it is really a sort of synthesis to that game and it isn't a good starting point on its own. Personally would have recommended EXEC_METAFALICA as a starting point instead, and even then it's potentially overwhelming and confusing to interpret a set of voices that you're supposed to be intimately familiar with by the point of hearing the song.
As a baseline, the Ar Tonelico series as a world is one based off of the power of music, and you are meant to build relationships with each of these girls/singers on an individual basis - literally resonating with their hearts and song. The problem is that without this context, it's very confusing to comprehend what is going on. So really the problem is that this music is _too_ attached to the game that it is in, as it in itself serves a function in the gameplay and the narrative. This is why I never really recommend people just listen to Ar Tonelico music, but rather go and play the game itself.
A bit of a hidden gem of the PS2 era JRPGs.

Phatansmagoria is an amazing song... In game it's also the ending credits song and I still remember vividly how incredible it felt hearing it for the first time.
The turns and harmonies makes it so incredible to listen too and has sense also extremely well of how the story of the game is ending too.
The Don Giovanni parallels is actually extremely fitting and I never thought about it ahah
I feel all those kind of Ar tonelico or surge concerto songs has the impact to make you understand perfectly the message they want to convey even without knowing the lyrics (that add a whole lot considering they invented 4/5 functional languages fo the 2 series)
From Ar norsuge it would be interesting having some partial opera singing Ra Ciel Reincarnation, a piece that left me with an incredible emotional impact considering the journey to reach it in the 2 games of the surge concerto series (prequel to Ar tonelico but released after)
Plus Phatansmagoria once you read the lyrics translation and know the message and story of the games hits so much much more... I tear up a bit everytime I listen to it ahah
The 2 series of Ar tonelico and Surge Concerto are both extremely incredible in music, both normal background and the hymns, you never know what are you going to listen and it's absolutely fantastic

The games are so-so in terms of being games themselves, (except AT3, that one is bad with some good music). Most of us love the games for the lore, songs and writing, for me in that order. They're PS2-PS3 games with a sequel-series released for PSV-PS3. If you want to get into it, I'd recommend playing AT1 on emulator, and playing the Fan Retranslation of the second game, since the games suffer from chronically bad localizations to the point the second game's localization introduced a game-breaking glitch. Otherwise, you can simply enjoy reading the wiki and listening to the songs, that is a very enjoyable experience as well. I recommend you listen to the whole Singing Hill trio of songs (Harmonics Eolia, Frelia & Tilia), their alternate versions with extended lore (EXEC_HARVESTASHA, Salavec Rhapalanca, & Ar=Ciel; Ar=Dor).
If you want an album talking about stories in the lore of the games (yes, they also released one of those because one of the singers just liked the idea that much, and pitched the idea) you should listen to the Ar=Ciel; Ar=Dor album, by Akiko Shikata. My favorites are the titular song, Shelanoir's Forest and Chronicles of Resshikou.
This is too much info already I feel, but I have to also mention the game's Conlangs (made-up languages). There's like 4 of them with one of them having 5 dialects based on the region, and a handful of songs are entirely in one of those languages (like Shelanoir's Forest, being entirely sung in a proto-language).
Also, the sequel-series is named Surge Concierto, and has two games: Ciel Nosurge and Ar Nosurge. They also have great music if you mind looking into that! :)

Within the story of the game, the characters are involved in destroying the world and making it anew at the end, moving on from something terrible and broken to something hopeful and new.
This song is played over the credits, it's your "reward" for completing the game fully. The characters are looking forward with hope into a world reborn and full of potential. The music box is a keepsake from one of the three character's childhoods, it's their nostalgia and fond memories for the world that was lost.
    ----
Ar Tonelico is very strange as a game, the game makes this music central to its premise, both in terms of story and in terms of game mechanics.
Most JRPGs have a party of characters who are equipped with various weapons and magic, and fight monsters in a battle system where everyone contributes equally. Not so in Ar Tonelico.
Most of the people of the world are "normal" humans, but there are, within the world a few thousand beings called "Reyvateils". Reyvateils are a second kind of person, partially synthetic, and with the ability to, through singing music, alter the fabric of the world, it's kind of like a weird techno-magic. The songs, and the conlang "Hymnos" are effectively the input system for executable code that feeds into the mainframe of the universe and "does stuff".
So, in an Ar Tonelico battle, you have a party of 3 or so "human" characters that fight monsters normally, and one Revateil who stands at the back of the group and sings a song. You choose what their song will do (usually a huge amount of damage, or a healing effect, or a status), and they begin singing the song. During This time the Revateil is vulnerable, and the rest of the group have to protect her so she can do her job - the better they protect her, the higher the quality of her song, and the more effective it is. The longer she sings for before executing the protocol, the more effective the song is.
Typically, the humans will be able to defeat smaller enemies, taking them out before they can harm the singer - but they usually do damage in the hundreds or thousands. Revateil songs can do billions of points of damage, and are thus core to defeating larger enemies and bosses that are just impossible for anyone else to tackle. The Revateil can't execute her song without protectors, and her protectors can't defeat the enemy without a revateil to blow them up, and therein lies the core of the combat design.
Because of this premise, it's understandable why so much of the game's music is so experimental and weird - or why they seem to have put so much work into it. The three singers of this song are the voice actresses and singers for the three revateils in the game itself, so... the distinction between "game" and "soundtrack" is much more of a tightly bound relationship than with most series.
    ----
A good example of how this manifests within the game would be comparing EXEC_PAJA/.#Misya extracting with EXEC_PAJA/.#Orica extracting. At the end of the first major plot arc of the game, you choose only one of these two characters to fight with you in a battle against the boss, while the other stays behind to deal with another problem. These two songs are used for the boss battle, the character you choose sings her version of it during the boss fight. You only hear the version for the character you choose - and the songs reflect the personalities of the characters themselves - Misya is very headstrong so opens very aggressively, but can't maintain that aggression for long. Orica is very shy and cautious, and takes her time to build up to her full strength.

If you liked EXEC_PHANTASMAGORIA which is the ending theme for Ar Tonelico then you should react to the final boss music. EXEC_HARMONIUS. Many songs in the series are good. However, HARMONIUS takes it to another level when it comes to intensity and feeling. It's not the most "complex" song. It's more traditional. I'm no expert but if I hear pipe organs then I consider it a "Traditional" style hymn. It is a song worth reacting to. Here is the link. ruclips.net/video/oxp4X59LoIY/видео.html

Great choice. Although i want you to listen others first before one of this masterpiece. i hope the next video *won't be* Exec.with.method_Metafalica/. because i want you to experience 2 songs before it happened first, which are exec metafalica and method metafalica.
anyway, i'm still waiting for you to react on the songs that i recommended on your 1st Ar Tonelico song, Marco 😍

More Ar Tonelico songs? Very nice!
If I could recommend more I'd go with songs like METHOD_METAFALICA/. from AT2, EXEC_CHRONICLE_KEY/. from AT1, METHOD_IMPLANTA/. from AT2 or XaaaCi. from AT3,... but if there's one song I'd like you to hear is EXEC_FLIP_ARPHAGE/. from AR3, easily my favorite song in the whole series.

I think XaaCi is a bit too heavy for someone not educated on the lore. It's a great song, one of my favorites, but a lot of the meaning comes from its context.

The Ar Tonelico series is criminally underrated. The games are indeed rather average, but the songs and soundtracks stay with me forever. So much thanks to the uploaders who uploaded the songs to RUclips way back then

Man I really respect you for actually being the only youtuber who react to AC5 Unsung war and also reacting to Ar Tonelico (not many people I know play these two game because the genre is so far apart). The only thing these two have in common is these two have quite unusual music/song/bgm, either from the language and the genre of the music.
You might be interested to actually learn the Conlang Script Hymnos, because just the script already have double meaning, as a program or command word, and the song itself.
Addendum : I think it will be better for your video to also include the script hymnos lyric so people can actually read, and people who play ar tonelico/ciela will explain the meaning of the song from the computer programming stand point.

Since you did an Ar Tonelico 3 and 1 song, may I suggest an Ar Tonelico 2 one?
    EXEC_with.METHOD_METAFALICA/.
This is a combination of 2 songs EXEC and METHOD METAFALICA.
As a tiny bit of context, EXEC contains the code to create land, but it requires too much resources and singing it alone would kill the singer. METHOD is the patch to connect EXEC to a, let’s call it energy source for lack of context. Both sung together is EXEC_with.METHOD_METAFALICA/. It’s obviously a duet, with the choir joining later.

Honestly, you are missing a LOT of context for this song. There are three individuals singing it. In setting, it was written by another individual when they were still young, naive, and loved humans, before she got fed up and rebelled because they kept pushing her to create Song Magic for war. Yes, Song Magic. It's a fantasy setting, and the magic in it is guided via music by individuals with special traits. Further, the reason there are three people singing it is because of going on a further journey to learn about the past of the main villain (who wrote the song, in setting) and using it to calm her hatred and redeem her. Even all of that is a heavy simplification, but it will give you some usable context for this song.

and for the context of the song, YES it's the last hymmnos in the first game it is used to restore the skye around the tower ( weather) and create a more "positive" conection between humans and reivateil and it's a " crafted hymmnos" a song that didn't already existed see it as adding a code line on the program of the tower it's why it's sang in japanese and not in hymmnos language! so it's a song of peace between peoples and between nature!

Tried a couple of times playing this game... never got to the point where they sing the song... You tube is the only place where I can find the song, but not the real video where the song was used in the game.
Lyrics wise, the girls are literally building back a destroyed world using this song, and reminiscing what the world and it's inhabitants were doing so that the restoration would make it a better place!

I just want to say the choices of the 2 Ar Tonelico song are so weird... Even though this one do conclude the Ar Tonelico 1, by the same "Finale" choice of Ar tonelico series, the 'EXEC_with.METHOD_METAFALICA/.' from Ar Tonelico 2 and the 'Ec Tisia' from Ar Tonelico 3 are much more epic and enjoyable.
Personal opinion, best song is 'EXEC_over.METHOD_SUBLIMATION/. ~ omness chs ciel sos infel', very peaceful but also powerful, brings energy to your mind and cure your spirit.
Another excellent choice of Ar tonelico song like 'EXEC_COSMOFLIPS/.' , a magnificent war song; beautiful songs like 'METHOD_IMPLANTA/.' and 'EXEC_CHRONICLE_KEY/.' are also remarkable.
If you read Ar Tonelico wiki, each Ar Tonelico songs besides have meaning on lyric, it also told a different story, one songs almost have 2 meanings, which is very interesting too.

in ar tonelico the song are magic there is 2 type of song magic "song magic" and "hymmnos" the idea is that the world had his surface destroyed by a catastroph created by humans but they created 3 towers that ar both towers with piece of ground tied to them ( that are the living place for the "new" humans above the dangerous smoke on the surface that will kill on contact for that they created " reivateils" that are artificial beins ( mostly female) that can sing in hymmnos the 3 tower are both living places ans supercomputer than can even alter reality depending of the song that you can see as a prayer in a divine language ( the god bein the tower and the programer bein the reivateil)! song magic are "normal" spells that alter reality in a small place hymmnos are "writen" songs that are much more powerfull see it as the diference between prayers and sutras! so the hymmnos are that and the strongest the hymmnos the more it need strong multiples reivateils ( don't forget the hymmnos language is coding for the supercomputer that is the tower)!
