Should you play it at the tavern? My husband has been doing performance music since the 1970's. Always locally, he's had real jobs the whole time too. Generally he asks himself "what do these people want to hear". Is this a rock and roll crowd, blues, folk, country western, or a bunch of stoners at an open mic.

Practice controlled strumming; up and down strokes at an even tempo. Remove capo and practice different chords. This will humble you quickly. Use capo for key changes, not as a crutch. Sooner the better. Old habits are hard to break. Keep on practicing brother
