JD Sumner was the man with the deep bass voice and his male group was the Stamps Quartet. The girl group was the Sweet Inspirations, Cissy Houston left the group around 1971 to focus on her children and home life so she is not in this performance. Elvis’ core band was the TCB Band, drums was a man named Ronnie Tutt, lead guitar James Burton, rhythm guitar was John Wilkerson, piano was Glen D. Hardin, bass was Jerry Scheff, harmony was Charlie Hodge and the orchestra conductor was Mr. Joe Guerio.

Brilliant reaction. You hit the nail on the head when you spoke about the effect Elvis had on his audience. I was on front row at the Cow Palace in San Francisco in 1976, and when Elvis walked out onstage it felt as if the air had been sucked right out of the arena. 17,000 fans had been holding their breath until they saw him, and all that energy was released at once. If an earthquake had struck Frisco at that moment, we would not have registered it.

Whitney Houston Said in an interview that her Mom was with Elvis for many years so it's possible she did other random preformances.

Cissy Houston was w-Elvis for only 5 wks. in 1969 - July 31st to Aug. 28th -- she left to be at home w-her children then went on to back up other singers before forging her own career. He had 3 female backups & Kathy (w-a "K"); there is a slight resemblance but not her. Elvis took on a 4th female backup but i can't recall her name right how. Whitney said her mother was w-Elvis for yrs. but it isn't true. Thx.

His band and background singers were great - he'd known the deep bass singer (JD Sumner) since he was 14 attending gospel concerts in Memphis. BRO, ELVIS performed this song initially in 1969, Live, in Vegas. This was his grittiest, rock driven version of all. He was a real nitpicker about every facet of a song, rehearsing until all his singers and musicians sounded exactly how he wanted. There are quite a few rehearsal videos available; one in particular is "Words", written and sung by the Bee Gees. I've seen one video that shows the practice and the Live concert version together. His voice is just out of this world! I loved Tina Turner. She was always a beautiful class act that deserved recognition for her strength and musicianship in the face of her early beginnings. I feel cheated that I was never able to see her light up the stage, live.

A slight error in the location as someone mentioned below; this is San Antonio, TX. The way to know is that there was never any professional film version of the Garden like there was for Vegas in 1970 that was done by MGM. There is only some poor quality film for audience member(s) that is dark & grainy. Thx for this -- he had some outstanding performances at this concert, one of which is "Burning Love" having a real good time w-it & his lyric sheet.

@PATRICK B. SMITH ; 1st : MGM was NOT the Hotel cause it didn't exist in 1972 ! MGM was the MOVIE Company (Metro Goldwyn Mayer) who filmed a series of Concerts Elvis did in 1971-72 nationwide for the later to be released title "Elvis on Tour" , wich later on won a GOLDEN GLOBE for BEST documentary in 1972. 2nd : This concert was filmed at the sold out HemisFair Arena. (doesn't exist anymore) in San Antonio Texas USA . In fact an Elvis concert in the 70's was ALWAYS SOLDOUT! You had to stand hours in line to get a ticket for an Elvis concert (no Ticketmaster etc) and average price was $ 15,- in 1970-1976. SO to conclude : We had Elvis Mania in the 50's and 70's . After Elvis came in the 80's Michael Jackson Mania .

When Elvis began in the mid 50s so did rock n roll. He immediately went to the top of the charts and had 12 #1 hits for the decade; no one else came close and he was 70% of the music market. That's why Rolling Stone said Presley made rock n roll the dominant pop genre and why he was called it's Big Bang by Chuck Berry. It's also why he was dubbed the King of the genre. The numbers supported it. Artists have come and gone with acts like the Beatles and Michael Jackson having similar success but Elvis's initial impact and his ensuing career explains why he was continually called the King.
Proud Mary was a hit by Credence Clearwater Revival. Tina Turner's version became the most popular and creative cover. Elvis's was closer to the original. I like both but being an Elvis fan I'm biased. The bass in the back was J.D. Sumner and he helped Elvis provide his signature gospel spirit.

Elvis sat on the front row many nights. One day JD saw Elvis and said, "Haven't seen you son, where have you been?", Elvis said I would come but I don't have much money to go anymore, So JD said you come to the back door from now on and I'll let you in. Years later Elvis would hire him as the famous bass singer you here in this song. Thanks Pat.

I think singing was so easy and natural for him, he was able to go all out on the entire performance. His voice is all him, no auto tune… which as a vocalist myself, I strongly dislike. During this time, vocalists used only their God given talent… Many albums he recorded were from live performances, and that just proves the quality of his voice… with some other artists the studio version does not match the live performance but with Elvis it did. He was the total package. He had everything talented vocalist, great showmanship, dancing, and charisma, and he is not bad to look at either…❤EP

Think you hit all the points spot on...Great high energy by Elvis as usual, he just draws you into a song like no one I've ever seen. Think it's because he puts so much emotion and passion into every performance and he just makes it all so much fun as well. If Elvis sings it you just have to pay attention and go with it!...
It also helps he picked out a phenomenal group of musicians as well, most of whom stayed with him till the end. They all loved working with Elvis, and again I think part of that was he was great fun to work for and with, just take a look at his rehearsals, everyone's having a blast!.. Another well-thought-out reaction..thanks Patrick, much appreciated.

Great reaction ❤ Glen Hardin on piano, Ronnie Tutt ( since passed) JD Sumner bass singer and Sweet Inspirations. Cissy Houston was not with SI in 72. She only did a year with Elvis due to other obligations. She returned for 25th Anniversary Special. Thanks for the memories.

His music is always great that’s the thing you can always always count on a good performance with any song he sings. He has the best and so beautiful inside and out. Try this link and put it in a couple of other comments and it is the same one however, I have several others, but this one you would like
I haven’t seen that you’ve shown up yet.

Powerful performance by Elvis, his amazing band and backup singers! That's The Sweet Inspirations backing him up. They performed with him on everyone of his concerts from 1969 to his last show in 1977. Over 1,200 shows all sold out!

Great reaction. I hadn't seen this clip in a while and it was just as enjoyable as all the other stuff. You've got to hear the CCR version. They were the ones that wrote it and they had a radio hit with it, but it's great because I really like all three of them so much. There are countless live video performances of a young Ike and Tina Turner and the ikettes doing Proud Mary. It's all different, it's all different links, it's different situations and venues. Some of it is TV performances in front of a live studio audience and some of it are actual live performances. It's just fascinating and then there are many from those shows that were also super popular, like, Mountain deep and river wide.

The song was done by Creedence Clearwater Revival excellent excellent job then Tina Turner grabbed a hoppedon it and Gave a whole new her loving style. Then Elvis snagged on to it and made it his. That's why it's the king period

Thank you for another great reaction to Elvis.
You assumed the mention of MGM in the title of the video meant that this was performed at the MGM Hotel in Vegas - which is an easy mistake to make. However, the MGM Hotel wasn't built until 1993. This is a clip from the documentary film 'Elvis On Tour' where he was filmed while on tour in 1972 and it was released by MGM 😊
