    DISCLAIMER:
    These videos are a revision guide designed to help students understand the requirements of the GCSE Science course, specifically the course specification(s) mentioned above. Although I say I can "help" students achieve a C grade, this should in no way be interpreted as a binding promise that this will definitely be a student's final grade. I offer expert guidance to try to improve a student's chances, but as there are so many factors beyond my control, I am unable to make any guarantee about the content of any exams or controlled assessments beyond any restatements of the relevant section or sections of the course specification(s). In my experience, a student's final grade is mainly dependent upon the quantity and quality of preparation he or she puts in. All I can do is try to optimise this preparation. In short, no-one can guarantee a grade; I'm just here to help.

  • @osssjsyuhddyk2268
    @osssjsyuhddyk2268 5 лет назад +2

    I have got a qustion i hope you can anawer it. Radioactive substances spit out one or more types of ionising radiation from the nucleus
    Q. Why do they do that?? and what is the meaning of ionising radiation??

    • @ChrisThorntonUK
      @ChrisThorntonUK  5 лет назад +1

      Good question. Nuclear radiation is a little similar to chemical reactions - both are driven by substances trying to lose energy to reach a more stable lower-energy state. In nuclear reactions, atoms can do this either by rearranging the number of protons and neutrons in their nucleus *or* by moving their electrons into lower-energy configurations.
      In the first case, atoms can either fire out a pair of protons and neutrons, this is alpha radiation, or they can spontaneously transform a neutron into a proton. However, if they transform a neutron they also have to produce an extra electron to conserve charge, and this extra electron is fired out of the nucleus as a beta particle.
      Electrons can move up and down a "well" of energy, resting at different sub-levels, with the lowest level being the lowest potential energy. Bombarding an electron with electromagnetic radiation can move it up the well (this is actually why different compounds absorb different frequencies of light and so look different colours, by the way) and if they emit that energy back out as electromagnetic radiation they can lose energy and drop back down again (if you've ever seen something glowing under UV light, this is what's happening).
      If the electrons of an atom are very high energy (typically because it was formed by the nuclear decay of another atom) they can rapidly emit this energy as the highest energy part of the electromagnetic spectrum; gamma rays.
      These releases of radiation are ionising because when they hit other atoms they can either give those atoms electrons or knock electrons off those atoms. That's all that ionisation is.
      Unfortunately, the bonds in the molecules we're all made of are made of the outer electrons of their constituent atoms, so if the atom loses those electrons the bonds can break and the molecules become damaged. If a DNA molecule is damaged in this way it can be particularly dangerous, potentially causing cancer.

    I'm sitting my exams in the Summer of 2018 and I can't find any videos on the new 9-1 spec, when will you do videos for that spec. I know I am quite early but i don't like leaving revision to the last minute.

    • @ChrisThorntonUK
      @ChrisThorntonUK  8 лет назад +2

      +Shammah Sowah Wow, you are early! The new specifications are still officially drafts and need final approval from the government. They could still change (though probably not much), so I'm waiting until they're official. That said, I expect almost everything in the videos I currently have will be relevant for you too.

    Do you only do videos that are specific to the AQA exam board ?

    • @ChrisThorntonUK
      @ChrisThorntonUK  8 лет назад +1

      Due to popular demand, all of my videos since September 2015 have been suitable for all the legacy specifications (for final exams in 2017). Any I make from now on will also be suitable for the new specifications (for first exams in 2018). That said, the differences between the specifications are relatively minor, so even students who aren't sitting AQA exams should be able to get value from the older videos.

      +Shim Awitz That's quite an expansive question. Your best bet is to have a look at the course specification. I assume you're sitting Edexcel, in which case the current specifications can be found on their website. You'll either be entered for their Separate Science or Mixed Science qualifications. The links to the specifications are below.
      Separate Science Route: qualifications.pearson.com/en/qualifications/edexcel-gcses/science-2011-individual.html
