      Hi, I was hoping you could speak to the quality of the Van Gogh metallics and interference colours VERSUS these Rembrandts. I noticed that the manufacturer's number for them are very similar -- e.g. VG Interference Blue is 20018461, and Rembt Interference Blue is 846. This is the same for all matching Interference colours, as well as Metallic Copper/Copper. Is it worth spending twice as much on the Rembrandts, or are the Van Goghs basically the same?
      Thank you! And thank you for the lovely, informative videos!
      (Sorry if you've answered this somewhere; I didn't see further notes re: Rembrandt on your website)

      @@lamadwp1083 In general if they have the exact same color, it's not worth the money to upgrade. Van Gogh's metallic and interference pocket box is amazing, and there isn't enough reason to spend double on the generic colors like gold, bronze, copper, interference blue etc. However, only Rembrandt offers the colors in this chameleon and spark video - so those glass based colors such as Spark Pink are only found in Rembrandt so VG has no comparable color. That being said you'd have to really want these specialty colors for a specific purpose to want to spend this much for them, even if they are unique. There are a couple that are really neat to look at, but the mica based ones in this set I would not buy over again - just the glass in rembrandt.

      Jackson’s Art has them at reasonable cost but the shipping to the US had gone through the roof. Where I paid less than $5 shipping for each order last year, the minimum shipping charge now is $38 ! I’m bummed but they probably are too since they probably lost the US market.

      @@farmwife7944 Very strange, I placed an order a few weeks ago and again today to the USA for under $10 in shipping. Last year it was free for most orders even under $75 worth, but now I only see discounts once the cart is around $100 and totally free again if my cart total hits a high amount like over $200. I selected the reasonably fast DHL option (3-9 days upgraded option) instead of the cheaper crappy international tracked post that takes about a month now due to USPS being so backed up. I wonder if it has to do with cart total or certain heavy items in the order? I don't buy much in bulky or heavy items, mostly just paint pans, tubes and sometimes pigment powders. I notice that the price for delivery goes down for the DHL option as your order total goes up though, so maybe it's most affordable when buying more items. I'd play around with what's in your cart to see if something is making it do an oddly high estimate. I'm really surprised to hear that!

    Hi, I'm a reader of your blog for several years but I'd never subscribed to you youtube channel as I prefer to read than watch reviews. Your reviews interest me though because you review that sort of colours that I rarely consider to use and when I need to do so it is very difficult to find information about their handling, their properties etc. So I want to thank you from my heart for all these reviews and the professional way that you test and share of course the results and to wish you to have a very nice and creative 2023!
    Regarding Rembrandt and Van Gogh watercolours. ( and I'm writing my comment here because the video is related but I'm referring to your blog posts).
    If I had to describe Talens watercolour lines with one word I would use the word Reliable.
    I use these two lines of watercolours for more than 30 years professionally and on paintings that I have exhibited and sold and I 've never had the slightest problem or complain about the permanence and the lightfastness of these colours. They are not the most trendy watercolours out there, ( though Talens is trying to "modernize" these two lines), and they are not the most textural, granulating of flocculating colours out there, but that is exactly their strong point. That there are no experiments, no trends and no surprises. These are reliable high quality paints that you don't have to test each and every time you buy a new tube or a new colour. You can buy them in blind and in bulk and know in advance how they are going to handle and behave on paper.
    I'd like to mention though that this is not exactly the case with other brands of watercolours and particularly with W&N watercolours that they used to be very reliable in the past, but unfortunately their quality varies nowadays from batch to batch depending I assume on the manufacturing facility. I wouldn't say that the current W&N colours are of the same quality with those that I used to use in the past. They've changed over time and unfortunately for the worst.
    So it is not accurate to compare Talens with W&N watercolours ( I'm talking about your blog posts) and neither with other brands because different brands have different objectives to say it so.
    Anyway.. Thank you for your informative reviews and I'll be looking forward from now on for your video reviews too.
    Greetings from Athens Greece. :)

    They are beautiful, but something that concerns me is the additional damage/wear & tear that the glass particles will cause to your brushes. When they catch the light you can see that the glass particles are still sharp edged. Would you have to be careful when handling the areas that are painted with them, or when cleaning your brushes?

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  4 года назад +5

      They are very fine particles, I rubbed the painting with my finger to test how secure it was to the page. I got a small amount on my skin and noticed that you can't feel it, it's not very gritty. It's smaller particles than most ultra-fine craft glitter. The paint rinsed easily from the brush with just a twirl in the water, but it's possible that if you were using it a lot over time it could dull the fine tip of a brush. I think the most concerning time would be when rubbing the brush onto the dry pan to re-wet it, might be like sandpaper to the soft hairs. Though I don't think it would hurt skin at all, I wouldn't want to get this in my eye.

    • @KimberlyCrick

      These are all very delicate, transparent, barely visible in most lighting situations even at masstone. So while yes you could apply them more delicately as a glaze, it may not provide an effect that is visible unless a lamp is right above the artwork.

    Very instructive as usual, however my first thought was how environmentally friendly can glitter based watercolour be? Glitter finding its way into the environment has been very bad. You can get biodegradable glitter, so can you tell me anything about the glitter used? Beautiful painting Kimberly. 👩‍🎨👏🏻

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  4 года назад +12

      The glitter problem has been plastic based glitter in disposable products like party materials and body sparkle gels that are worn and wash off into the ocean. The craft use of glitter is a very small portion of this problem, and the painting part of art and crafts even less. That being said, it's good to be concerned about the environment and be cautious about how much of anything you rinse down the drain. However, this product is not made of "glitter" as we know it - it's just "glitter-like". The interference colors are made from mica, a naturally occurring pearlescent mineral. The spark colors are made with very finely ground glass, essentially beach sand. I have not heard of any environmental problems relating to the use of glass or mica based glitter, only plastics - and even then only in terms of highly disposable products. Hope that helps :)

    I don’t think there’s usually a concern for lightfastness with mica and glitter colors, so spending the cost of professional watercolors for something that can be bought or even made yourself very inexpensively is not necessary. I really appreciate your reviewOf these paints though. And I know you will find a use for them with the pretty butterflies that you paint!

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  4 года назад +3

      Sadly some companies use subpar pigments bound to the mica to color it, which fade in sunlight. My Paul Rubens glitter set reviews show all the fading that happens when companies do this. There is not typically a concern for lightfastness with gold and silver mica, because they use red iron oxide, a very stable earth pigment, mixed with mica to make gold... and lamp black often to make silver to gunmetal. When it's colorful it could even be opera pink or other fugitive colors mixed in, so definitely worth checking :)

    • @creativesolutionstoart
      @creativesolutionstoart 4 года назад +1

      Kimberly Crick Art Oh, that makes a lot of sense! I was under the impression that most mica Colors are cosmetic grade, and that would mean the quality was at least moderate. But you’re right unless they are using Earth pigment oxide then they would not be light fast. Thank you for your reply
