  • Labour Deputy Leader Angela Rayner joins GMB today to discuss the Labour Party’s commitment to crack down on social housing landlords who fail to fix mouldy homes. They aim to extend this to private landlords as well. The new law will require landlords to investigate and fix mould issues within a two week period.
    The move comes after the death of two year old Awaab Ishak in December 2020. After prolonged exposure to mould in his home. Angela Rayner explains why Labour want to take this law further.

    It's ridiculous not to apply it to private rentals.
    Private landlord take housing benefit claimants, and they'll be the ones who don't fix up their properties properly as don't need to as council pays the rent regardless. Social housing already has a legal obligation to keep homes safe.
    Without applying this to private rentals, it's a joke.

    She talks about bringing about a two state solution. Several Israeli representatives, including Netanyahu, have said there wiil never be a two state solution. Rayner is morally bankrupt and couldn't even bring herself to vote for a ceasefire. The US and UK have cut off aid to Gaza, a move which the labour party initially supported.Speaking as a grandmother, how does she sleep knowing that 26000 are dead and the rest are suffering, starving and dying from preventable diseases? Shameful.

    This must be applied to private landlords too. I lived in a house that had mould growing in every room. Every time we complained, nothing was done. We didn't move out because we were saving for a house and then covid hit so we were stuck for another couple of years. When we did move out we had to throw almost all of our furniture away.

    Mould on the whole is caused by people not buildings, I know there will be some with damp issues but the vast majority of the time it is caused by a build up of mositure from people using the property, plus not enough ventilation. Even the best newbuild will have mould if people aren't doing things correctly. The problem is modern houses tend not to have chimneys and are very airtight, plus we do washing at home all the time nowadays.

    • @boobopish

    • @desmondroberts6034
      @desmondroberts6034 7 месяцев назад +3

      @dannymurphy1779 Serious and persistent mould growth is caused by ingress of water into the property. Often solid wall properties suffer with rain soaking through, perhaps because gutters are blocked, pouring rain down the external surface. I don't suppose people would live like that for the want of opening a window. New builds have damp walls because of the fresh mortar and plaster so doubly need to be ventilated. It is all too easy to blame the tenants' behaviour but this is usually an excuse.

    • @ridethelakes
      @ridethelakes 7 месяцев назад +2

      Absolutely true. Once a small amount of mould forms if the air is humid it will just grow and grow taking over a property at a scary rate. Properties need to be ventilated but because of heating costs windows, doors are all shut. Then hot showers, kettles, cooking, breathing, hanging up washing all creates moist air on cold unheated walls which creates mould.

    For our deceitful, spineless MP's ignorance is no impediment to their opening their big mouths before they get their brains in gear. Modern Houses have very high standards of insulation, and virtually no drafts/ventilation. Warm air absorbs moisture, cold air dumps moisture, onto surfaces within the house, usually walls and ceilings. So, where in a modern house does moisture come from? Well it comes from washing machines, baths and showers, peoples breath, kitchens, gas fries and central heating boilers. So, in these very common situations, to prevent condensation and consequent mould on walls and ceilings, the whole of the property needs to be maintained (in virtually all common rooms) at a minimum of 19deg. C., AND all the rooms need to be ventilated on a daily basis. Now of course very few tenants will maintain the heating in the property at a constant 19 deg., and open the windows daily to ventilate the property. (Generally, windows should be opened slightly to enable ventilation in the mornings, and closed in the evenings before the dew point. (That is not to say there are not cases of poor landlords, letting drafty and damp properties. But mould on walls etc., and dampness are two completely different physical processes.

    Maybe there’s a reason why ours homes are more likely to have this horrid problem.
    I come from a country where we don’t have this problem, we built differently from the uk and this it’s not a concern for homeowners or tenants.
    I don’t fully believe that this problem is caused by humans only. Yes condensation when living, cooking, bathing, drying clothes, breathing etc etc it causes moisture in the air… BUT if following a strict rule in your home and helping to diminish moisture as much as possible and still get mould… it’s a building failure not a human one.

      This. I keep my windows open pretty much all year round with a cameras to prove it. Purely because in my last tenancy (admittedly I was a student at the time and student housing landlords tend to be meaner to students for some reason) I got mould. Interestingly, I shower with the window open, I was struggling with an eating disorder at the time so my meals didn't even include actual cooking and there was no washing machine so I used a launderette and I still got mould. I was blamed for it and they took my deposit so I couldn't afford to actually move and was homeless for awhile and now im terrified. I suffer from long covid and a multitude of respiratory and physical illnesses. I am constantly unwell and in winter having the windows open is horrible, but if I cannot afford to be blamed for a problem I didn't cause again.
