Features like choosing to opt for a song that allows you to warp to owl statue's signifying places you've already visited on the map and featuring a mask that lets you sink underwater on-the-fly, and a mask that allows for fast ground travel, feels like smart and thought out game design, especially if you compare it to Ocarina of Time. I especially like seeing how much more thought and care went into the game's characters and their own story arcs which you experience through side quests. Collecting the masks in Majora's Mask, ironically, is one of the most fun side quests to do outside of the main adventure, with the game even giving you a badass reward for getting all the masks. I especially like the stories behind each of the transformation masks. They really help to exemplify the game's overall darker tone with how those masks are obtained by healing the souls of creatures that were ultimately cursed by the side effects of what Majora's Mask did to them. It's a masterpiece because it feels like OOT (uses same engine), but goes its own original way and is still the darkest Zelda. I still have my original N64 copy.

Tons of the storylines are sad, but have some type of catharsis when you finish the quest/storyline. My cousin thought that it was a realistic way of showing that though Link is a hero, no matter how many people he helps, it's impossible to save everyone. Thought it was an interesting perspective.
The thing that I will always love about Majora's Mask is that is a wonderful place to explore some very difficult topics while always emphasising the Light in the stories at the end. I would even say that it's perfect for children in that way, after watching a video on why it's good that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish scares them. And I think that is where my completionist streak started, to be honest. There is so much melancholy yet Light in this game that I wanted to see the full, happy credits. Which is another very powerful thing about this game. The credits show you what you have done and how everything continues. Life goes on and gets better, no matter how dark it is now. I'm rambling, but I absolutely adore this game to bits. And no matter how good Tears of the Kingdom is, I don't expect it to topple Majora's Mask on my list. Not with all the importance it has in my life.
I'm sorry, what the fuck? Majora's Mask being perfect for children, and comparing it to The Last Wish? Are you fucking serious? Do you have some sort of problem? Most kids, even most TEENS shouldn't be exposed to the kind of shit Majora's Mask has going on in it. They don't need to have nightmares for the rest of their fucking lives.
I like to separate the zelda games between the 'hyrule/triforce' games and the 'other games'-- In that vein, link's awakening and majora's mask, the 'other games,' are games that deal with things other than saving the world. while link's awakening is a about letting go of dreams and facing reality, majora's mask is a bit letting go of grief and anger, and being able to overcome pain. they are more than just stories about power and wisdom, they are mostly stories about courage. :D
The world building in Majoras mask is one of the reasons it's my favorite Zelda game, for me my favorite side quest in the game is also the most famous one, anju and kafei, the ending of the side quest once completed on the final day hit me so hard I nearly started crying.
One of my TOP quotations from the game that each Zelda gamer should take at heart: "The right thing... what is it? I wonder... if you do the right thing... does it make... everybody... happy?" -Lunar Child with Twinmold's Mask and: "Let's play something else. Let's play good guys against bad guys. Are you ready? You're the bad guy. And when you're bad, you just run. That's fine, right?" -Lunar Child with Majora's Mask / The game teaches us empathy and transcends us beyond "good vs evil"
Thank you for this, I loved your take on the song of healing. It and the Ikana region is very special to me due to someone I loved. What your described is why I made that song my main OC's theme.
I really hope you read this because I've commented on this for so many years and I really hope I'm not just going crazy. I read an article saying that the reason Majora's Mask was so alienated from the series was because one of the creators (apparently not Miyamoto) had his wife taken from him due to cancer. This title was literally just reused assets, not intended for a release but was compelled to show (which, by the way, the article never mentioned a name) for some distinct reason. It's why a lot of the mechanics were a bit off. For example, how when you meet the owl for the first time in the swamp or when you use the Deku Flower to get into the Woodfall Temple. There are literally a few inches from you and the ledge. Also, how dark the theme was. Although, TLoZ has always had dark themes implemented, this particular title ended up being the darkest of them all. It would make sense as to why this game was created. A grieving developer taking his anguish on a title he was familiar with whilst using already created assets, as a sort of outlet but, was either persuaded to show his project to the higher-ups or somehow knew he was onto something legendary (no pun intended.) It ended up becoming a cult classic for Zelda lovers everywhere. All of this I read on that article that, truthfully, I wish I could find. I haven't been able to confirm if this is true or not but, in my head, it all makes sense. I just hope some hardcore Zelda fan, like you, proves me right and actually shows me the article I once saw to put my mind at ease...
This has always been my favorite ever since it came out, at the time all I heard from every other person who played it was "it's so dumb, only 3 days and you lose your progress in dungeons" but I loved it and it's darker themes, it felt more impactful or urgent, something I can't really say I felt in OoT, everytime I play through the game I HAVE to do the anju/kaife quest line before going into the moon.
This was my first Zelda game. I got it from blockbuster in 2000 thinking that this was the big Zelda game everyone was freaking out about. I could never get past the deku palace as I was like 6 years old, but I replayed it ten years later and it ended up becoming maybe my favorite Zelda game. The side quests are so good in particular and I love the surreal dark take using OoT assets. I always want more games to take risks like this one does
I love how this game was actually my introduction to the Legend of zelda franchise when it comes to the 3D games. Having only played Link's awakening and Oracle of ages before this. it was such a fun experience. remember getting it very late at night. but when I got home I couldn't even play it yet because the N64 expansion pack wasn't even included in the special edition so we had to drive back to the store at around 9pm or so just to go buy it.
Last time i played Majoras mask i ended doing a final super run before i beat the game, I slowed down time and did every side quest i possibly could while also beating every boss in each of the four areas, cannonically helping everyone i possibly could before completing the game and putting everything to rest
Majora's Mask is My all time FAVORITE zelda game of all time, If not my favorite game of all time. Recently got a tattoo done of Link and skull kid its such a great game i dont get how anyone can hate it. My second favorite though is Twillight Princess
This game is special. Not only following the biggest and best Zelda game at the time, but being completely different in its structure and approach. I loved every haunting second of it the first time I've played it back then. I caught myself checking the sky for the moon every few minutes and even a few times irl 😅. The feeling of inevitable doom the whole time and the soundtrack when the clock tower finally opens still give me shivers.
This video is so well made. They way you go about things proves that this game is in a league of its own. BoTW stands no chance in being top 3 at all. It isn't the open world that makes a Zelda game good. It's the characters and their stories. Majora's Mask conveys that better than anything.
I am pretty sure that the devs at Nintendo have come out and said that representing the five stages of grief specifically was not a part of the game's original thematic intent, and that there are supposed to be other emotions conveyed in each area, not just a singular emotion from the stages of grief.
This video is a masterpiece for such a small channel, but i have a suggestion. Can you lower the volume of the audio, because in some parts, the music and sounds are louder than your voice.
Really great video! majora's mask is still my favorite zelda game. I do wish you didn't include the 5 stages of grief piece though. It's a crazy fan theory that is proven to be wrong. Shigeru Miyamoto stated in an interview if you thought the game was about the five stages of grief then you're playing the game wrong. Your commentary on the Gorons and Zoras pretty much covers why it doesn't work.
Nice video but I recommend lowering the other tracks when you talk. There were multiple times the music was louder than you and it was difficult to hear you.
Lost my original mm3d cartridge right before I could beat majora for the first time. I got a second one and finished the job, so happy to say that Nintendo's hard work made this worth playing twice in one sitting.
My theory is that termina is the afterlife and link dies when he falls down that hole. Skull kid was probably killed by the power of the mask, and that’s why he suddenly has powers when he is in termina. So the representations of grief really is spot on.
I didn't realise until the back end of the video your subscriber count. I really thought that a channel of this quality would have had much more subscribers! Bravo for the amazing video though!
The audio level issues from the previous video are more apparent in this video than the last one. To be specific, the game audio is too high and your mic is also a bit low, like at 2:20. The only other thing I could really say is that presentation-wise, there's still something missing that makes it your own. Right now it gives off a "student presenting to the class and reading the script word for word" kinda feel. I consumed this video as pure audio, so I don't really have much to say about visuals. But from the brief skim through, the clips you chose are really good and convey the topics they're associated with really well.
its a channel with 113 subscribers. I dont mean that as a bad thing, but at this point in any youtuber's career, they have yet to find a formula, and simply havent had the trial and error of the video making process to refine their craft.
@@LimeAtions 113 subscribers is the perfect time to recieve this sort of critique. The sooner a video creator learns to get good, the greater their chance of success will be
precisely, I want to take on as much constructive criticism as I can to find my footing and provide better quality videos with every new project that I start working on.
The saddest part of this game and what gave me the most feeling of redemption was the chicken farmer, I STILL get teary thinking about how sad he felt not getting to see his chicks grow

Yeah majora isn't a black sheep game , was getting multiple 95-97% review scores when released its just it separated the men from the boys with its 3 day management system , it's their fault if people pussied out on this game after playing
Looking at some of these comments, it looks like you might be looking for constructive criticism? I may not make videos myself, but I do watch a lot of videos and I think I can point out a few things that might help. In the opening the game/music audio is too loud compared to your voice. You are still perfectly audible but the music volume makes it hard to listen to. And another thing about the opening is your timing was a bit off. It'd probably be more impactful if you could have timed the ending of your opening speech with the music better; instead of stopping mid musical movement you could have tried to push or shave a few more seconds and stopped at either 1:17 or at 1:26. It is at those two points where the music adds in a new, discordant instrument and would have been much better times to let the music take over. Moving onto the video edits, some of the cuts feel very abrupt (like the one at 2:26) while other times it feels like you linger on a shot too long without commentary. You might consider not having lengthy periods of dead air with just the game playing unless you are using it to illustrate a point. Doing so in the story summary feels like a waste of time since seeing the footage alone isn't really adding anything to the segment. Instead, you could have the video fade out as your voice does at the end of the sentence or segment so both can fade back in on the next part. The cut at 2:42 is particularly great since the visuals match with your voice and it isn't immediately obvious that you removed several shots from the game footage. Immediately after, I really like you timing the footage of the door closing on Link and Tatl. That pause felt really good and it doesn't feel like you are lingering on it for too long. But I'd have probably moved your next voice line up a few seconds because the moment after the door closes where Tael gets the speech bubble feels like dead air again. The very next part where you fade your voice and the audio into the twisted hallway is excellent by the way. The footage and audio are nicely synced up and the game footage is striking enough to work without commentary over it. My one criticism is that you should have maybe dropped the audio of the game when you started speaking since the game audio was playing a particularly loud sound effect. In fact, if I remember correctly I think the background audio should be about 40%-60% of your voice's audio while moments you want the voice to fall away and to instead have the background audio take center stage it should be 80% of your voice's audio. Don't quote me on that, it's been a long time since I last did any editing work. I'll just say that if the your voice audio is at the proper volume level, the game audio that plays behind your voice should be lower while scenes without your voice should be nearly at the same volume level as your voice. I could keep going on and on for the entire video but I think I'd like to just enjoy watching it now instead of going back to my film classes. I hope I didn't come off too mean or condescending here. I think you have a great talent for this but you just don't have the experience to get all the timings right. You've got several that feel very good while others linger for too long or have weird, dead moments.
Thank you for the feedback! Watching back some of the moments you listed I agree with your points and do feel as though I can improve with making sure there aren't unnecessary dead spots and making sure the audio levels are balanced out correctly. Gonna keep these in mind when editing the next video to make sure the quality and pacing is better, thanks again!
Great video but highly recommend lower the volume of the music/sound effects next time. Not sure if it’s just me, but I found it distractingly loud and had trouble focusing on what you were saying. Can’t wait to see your future content!
This is the first video that was recommended to me by you and I enjoyed it a lot! I had some thoughts about some tweaks you could make to make it easier for the consumer side to watch. I'm by no means a video editor or anything, it's just things I noticed, that might be completely wrong, but thought I'd mention them as it might help a little bit! First I'm assuming this was edited in a number of sessions? The way the video was edited for the final day section, in comparison to the first day section for example seemed different. The way you'd edited for the last day, where you had the game sounds or edited bgm quietly as you voiced over, and then the clip that reflects what you were talking about at appropriate volume was much easier to understand your points and follow the script. The first day was a little difficult to follow as the game volume and the voiceover volumes were similar, and it was really easy to get distracted by the game sounds, making me miss what you'd said at points. Bgm is good to add emotion and flow to a video, but sound effects I think only distract unless they're in to emphasise a point or for comedic purposes. Some did actually work in the video so I think it's deciding where to keep them and where to omit SFX. I think some parts of the script felt a little long - when giving examples of different reactions to the moon falling for example, each example was given as a sentence followed by footage of roughly equal lengths. I think this disrupted the rhythm of the video a bit, as it was hard to follow the different examples you were raising as they were each being given full explanations with long footage, rather than direct short comparisons to support the point you were making. I think something you especially want to highlight, giving longer footage is good, but otherwise I think it could have been shortened to give more movement and flow to the video. This kind of goes back to how you edited the final part compared to the first part again though. I think it's about editing to really hone in the point you want to highlight. (I often watch hour long video essays btw so there's nothing wrong with the length of the video or what was being said, I honestly think it's just editing.) My favourite part of the video was when you started talking about the 5 step of grief, and I felt you could have talked maybe even more about this. Or make it the overarching "hidden topic" of the video which as you said give it that melancholic feeling. The side quest examples you talked about fitted into it as well and it really gave me a different perspective. (Edit is adding this part I forgot to mention!) As the video moved along the video was much more enjoyable to watch, which is a shame as I think some people may have clicked off by that point :( I imagine editing and finding your rhythm for your videos is going to take time and practice though. Idk if you already do, but it might help to get an unbiased opinion from someone when you've got your draft as well to see where they think it went on a bit, or somewhere wasn't clear. If they could give you specific points it could help. Anyway! You've earned a subscriber and good luck with future videos if you decide to keep going with them. I love Zelda content! Very excited for TotK too!
Thanks a lot man! To answer your questions, I probably took about two weeks to edit this video so yeah there were a lot of sessions. The audio mixing has been brought up a few times already but nothing concerning the in-game sound effects so I appreciate you bringing that to my attention. And yeah, I still consider myself as starting out with this type of content since I've only completed two of these so far, but helpful responses like these really help with pinpointing what I can work on and improve upon with later projects. Thanks for the sub and your comment, stuff like this means a lot!
Audio balance is a bit off. Music is pretty loud compared to your voice. Maybe have it faded in the back some more. The music doesn't need to be extremely present when you are talking.
Is there a source on MM being set two months after OoT? I know it’s a sequel obviously but I don’t think I’ve ever seen an exact amount of time specified anywhere.
Favourite game of mine. Reminds me of a quote from Night In The Woods "I believe in a world that doesn't care and in people who do." The world in MM is so cold, heartless and dreadful. Left to their own devices, the people of Termina have no hope or chance. Everything Link does in the game is give them compassion and humanity, and it saves them. There is no heroic, epic journey that focuses quite like that on helping each other instead of just killing monsters. It's a game that just makes you a better person. It's so hard to make someone understand if they haven't played.
Happy Easter everyone! Apologies for the late upload, trying to stick to schedules while not burning myself out is hard and I think I've found a good balance between working on these projects and taking time to enjoy myself. If you have any constructive criticism, please leave it below!

It’s one of the reasons the game is amazing too
This game also spawned the most iconic and longest Creepy Pasta series ever to exist.
my favorite game of all time 🙏
Hey its pun, didn't know you made a yt channel slash, Ill give it a subscribe. Wish you luck bro. Great vid btw love majora mask.
I received my copy of it on Christmas 2000. Every year I play it on Christmas Eve to new years eve to save the world for another year
Awesome video man. Keep this kind of stuff up and I can see your channel thriving.
I love the Australian accent. Okka-reener. Amazing.
I don’t care how many people do video essays on the “darker tone” of this game… I will watch every single one. Because this game is that good.
The world building in Majoras mask is one of the reasons it's my favorite Zelda game, for me my favorite side quest in the game is also the most famous one, anju and kafei, the ending of the side quest once completed on the final day hit me so hard I nearly started crying.
I’m doing all the side quests rn… how is there so much content in this “rushed” game
Majora's Mask was genius, and a highly underrated game for its time!
One of my TOP quotations from the game that each Zelda gamer should take at heart: "The right thing... what is it? I wonder... if you do the right thing... does it make... everybody... happy?" -Lunar Child with Twinmold's Mask
and: "Let's play something else. Let's play good guys against bad guys. Are you ready? You're the bad guy. And when you're bad, you just run. That's fine, right?"
-Lunar Child with Majora's Mask / The game teaches us empathy and transcends us beyond "good vs evil"
Love this channel, can’t wait to see what else you make
This was my first Zelda game. I always want more games to take risks like this one does
This game played a huge part in my childhood thank you for the video!
Thanks for this analysis , majora vids are always welcome .
Subbed
How can you make this video and not even mention my main man, the GOAT- Tingle. You’re better than this man.
Ah damn, I knew I was missing something!
Tingle - I'M GAAAAAAYYYYY!!!
Majora's Mask is a great Legend of Zelda game!
this video was so good!, you deserve more subs
This was my freaking childhood... 😢 the memories 😢 my friends
Let's be honest, Majora's mask hasn't been considered the black sheep for at least a decade. Zelda 2 however...
Majora’s Mask is such an unique piece of art! Great video!
Good video. I finished Majora's Mask yesterday as well
This video is so well made. They way you go about things proves that this game is in a league of its own. BoTW stands no chance in being top 3 at all. It isn't the open world that makes a Zelda game good. It's the characters and their stories. Majora's Mask conveys that better than anything.
Dawg i gasped when i realized you only had 280 subs W vids
I am pretty sure that the devs at Nintendo have come out and said that representing the five stages of grief specifically was not a part of the game's original thematic intent, and that there are supposed to be other emotions conveyed in each area, not just a singular emotion from the stages of grief.
This video is a masterpiece for such a small channel, but i have a suggestion. Can you lower the volume of the audio, because in some parts, the music and sounds are louder than your voice.
Thank you for the kind words! The audio mixing has been taken into note and the next video will have better audio mixing.
This is a great video it deserves more attention
A true masterwork, the pinnacle of fiction. By the way, your profile pic is a FAT W - Rurouni Kenshin also peak fiction
I never figured out how to cross into the Gordon snow bridge and quit playing
Really great video! majora's mask is still my favorite zelda game. I do wish you didn't include the 5 stages of grief piece though. It's a crazy fan theory that is proven to be wrong. Shigeru Miyamoto stated in an interview if you thought the game was about the five stages of grief then you're playing the game wrong. Your commentary on the Gorons and Zoras pretty much covers why it doesn't work.
Best atmosphere in any game this game its a masterpiece
How do you only have 179 subscribers, this is like 100k subs quality material !
Thank you so much! Kinda crazy that a week ago it was only nearing 70 subscribers 😆
Nice video but I recommend lowering the other tracks when you talk. There were multiple times the music was louder than you and it was difficult to hear you.
great video
chillz
My top 5 Zelda Games 🛡️🙏
#1 Majora’s Mask
#2 Ocarina of Time
#3 A Link Between Worlds
#4 Twilight Princess
#5 Breath of the Wild
Lost my original mm3d cartridge right before I could beat majora for the first time. I got a second one and finished the job, so happy to say that Nintendo's hard work made this worth playing twice in one sitting.
My theory is that termina is the afterlife and link dies when he falls down that hole. Skull kid was probably killed by the power of the mask, and that’s why he suddenly has powers when he is in termina. So the representations of grief really is spot on.
I didn't realise until the back end of the video your subscriber count. I really thought that a channel of this quality would have had much more subscribers! Bravo for the amazing video though!
Running into this video and the thing that struck me the most was that Tatl and Tael are a play on the word tattletale.
@@LimeAtions these are the types of comments you want, your first few video's are gonna have problems, knowing what other people notice is critical
@@LimeAtions I know the guy and and I asked him if he wanted my thoughts before posting this lmao
The saddest part of this game and what gave me the most feeling of redemption was the chicken farmer, I STILL get teary thinking about how sad he felt not getting to see his chicks grow
Low subscriber but high quality such a good content majora's mask just perfect as you said melancholic perfect I am watching oot video rn and leaving a like
Thank you so much!
great video! pls keep it up!
This game made extremely depressed throughout.
This Game teaches zs about love, respect and that the meaning of live is to leave a legacy
It should be called SOTN Tower Temple.
How tf do we have the same sub count??? Anyway yours just increased by 1, amazing video, amazing effort, I could never put this much into a video… keep doing what you’re doing you’ll become big soon
Thank you for the kind words!
The Sun and Moon Mask is the best side quest of all time
Even though it’s considered the “black sheep” of the series, it’s still my favorite game in the Zelda series.
The black sheep is actually The Adventure of Link.
Yeah majora isn't a black sheep game , was getting multiple 95-97% review scores when released its just it separated the men from the boys with its 3 day management system , it's their fault if people pussied out on this game after playing
majoras mask video i find, youtuber that i subscribe
1 of my favourite zelda games frr 👀👹
It's a masterpiece.
Great video but highly recommend lower the volume of the music/sound effects next time. Not sure if it’s just me, but I found it distractingly loud and had trouble focusing on what you were saying. Can’t wait to see your future content!
Instant Nostalgia
i didn't immediately pick up on the accent so i heard "majora's mosque"
A MM video essay? Groundbreaking.
What's next, Spec Ops The Line?
Maybe once I get around to playing it 😅
very nice brother
Pour le référencement
(I often watch hour long video essays btw so there's nothing wrong with the length of the video or what was being said, I honestly think it's just editing.)
My favourite part of the video was when you started talking about the 5 step of grief, and I felt you could have talked maybe even more about this. Or make it the overarching "hidden topic" of the video which as you said give it that melancholic feeling. The side quest examples you talked about fitted into it as well and it really gave me a different perspective. (Edit is adding this part I forgot to mention!)
As the video moved along the video was much more enjoyable to watch, which is a shame as I think some people may have clicked off by that point :(
I imagine editing and finding your rhythm for your videos is going to take time and practice though.
"Majora's Mosque."
Ofc.
They should make a game where Link is really really really really fat. They haven't done that yet
Thank you for using original game footage instead of the trash 3DS remake 🙏🏻
Audio balance is a bit off. Music is pretty loud compared to your voice. Maybe have it faded in the back some more. The music doesn't need to be extremely present when you are talking.
Is there a source on MM being set two months after OoT? I know it’s a sequel obviously but I don’t think I’ve ever seen an exact amount of time specified anywhere.
Hey mate, i have subbed based on this video alone…
Still the best Zelda game ever made. And it's not even close!
Still haven’t finished it
I lose patience it
Maybe kind day?
Nice video, but work on your sound mixing.
The game audio often drowns out your commentary.
Noted, thanks for the feedback!
I'd rather try to beat Conker's BFD blindfolded than say that MM is better than OOT, but to each their own.
It's the sequel to Ocarina Of Time.
I was too scared to play it
Favourite game of mine. Reminds me of a quote from Night In The Woods "I believe in a world that doesn't care and in people who do."
The world in MM is so cold, heartless and dreadful.
Great video! Just a suggestion it’s a bit hard to hear you’re voice over the game music/sounds. It’d be cool to hear your voice a bit clearer :)
Another "video essay" where the essayist just says what happens in the game
Advice on your audio. Lower the game volume at segments where you're talking
