You're welcome! I'm resealing my wife's Forester oil pan and I thought I was going to have to move the oil cooler to get a clean shot at placing the pan. Turns out it's the oil pickup that makes it a "fun" job. FYI her 03 has holes in the subframe that allowed me to remove and replace the pan without tipping the engine.
Mr Subaru I wanted to thank you for all these videos you have posted, seriously these are priceless and you’ve saved me a ton of cheese. One request, maybe put all the tools and sizes used in the video description. Once again, thank you so so much for taking the time to make these and upload them
Did this job this weekend on both my 2004 3.0 Outbacks. I am a huge fan of this guys videos. Clear and always helpful. Thank you very much and I look forward to seeing more.
Very helpful video, thanks. To other viewers, take a few minutes and wash off surrounding area before removing oil filter and cooler, will make it much easier to ensure no leaks from o ring or crap getting into block.
Thanks, this is a very informative video. I just undertook the replacement of the oil cooler gasket on a 2005 Legacy EZ30D due to having an oil leak in this region. I couldn't get the oil filter off at first, but a screwdriver pierced through the filter managed to get it to shift, even if it was a very messy method. Just of note, the later EZ30D has an extra coolant hose junction just on the lower coolant pipe leading upwards to a coolant line that I couldn't follow further, this stopped me from being able to put the new gasket into the oil cooler without disconnecting the lower coolant pipe. This has stopped the oil leak though so far.
I was wondering where that oil was coming from!! I have an 08 Tribeca. Going out to get an o-ring tomorrow.....thanks. Fyi- the noise you have when running sounds like mine did last year, until I replaced the idler pulleys (2). Rock Auto saved me quite a bit on those.
This may have just solved my oil leak I have on my car. Didn't even know there was a gasket there. But it would explain why I have a slight leak down there.
Brian Skinner just check the secondary tank after a couple heat/cool cycles, top it up, you should be good. Anytime I overheat I find I need to top that one up. When cool of course.
I have a small leak from my drain plug even when using a crush washer from Subaru. I’ve tried using other washers but nothing works. Do I need to change my oil pan or can I use gasket maker or something to stop the leak? My Impreza is 20 years old and I’m trying to not spend a lot of money on it if possible.
Mr. Subaru......From what I see on your vehicle, you have rubber flexible tubes that are used for the radiator antifreeze transfer.... I have a 2001 Subaru Forester that seems to have hard rigid antifreeze transfer tubes..... I have to drain radiator in order to pull my oil housing off to replace o-ring.. correct????
I thought my oil filter had come loose. Maybe it is a toe ring I don't know but the bottom of that engine is covered in oil. And since I replace the oil filter I've had no drips on the cardboard! I understand there's a PVC valve very down in there somewhere that also can be the Leaky culprit
My 97 impreza 2.2 has a leak that is hitting the exhaust and smokes from the engine after I turn the car off for about 5 minutes, and a lot of oil on the pan and general area I have done the valve cover gaskets and cv boots that were broken and now that I see this what you think the chances are it could be this and just blowing around the motor while driving. Thanks for any info
is this relevant to a subaru 2007 outback. No too long ago started doing my own car after getting the go around from a couple of mechanics, and never looked back, started with an alternator saved some money and the car started purring. I felt the difference right away. Thanks for a great video by the way.
Great videos I have a question on windshield wipers, my intermittent function stopped working( only has 1 speed) all other functions are ok is there a module somewhere that needs to be replaced?
Hey, quick question: I was doing the rocker cover gaskets yesterday on the same engine and in the spirit of getting as many cables and wires out of the way as possible I disconnected a wire that connects just above the oil cooler. In the process though the plastic casing of the connector just crumbled. Do you you know what the wire is and if the connector is something I can just replace with another generic one from a hardware/electrical supply store? It's a blade connector.
Do you know if a 2002 2.5 liter outback had an oil cooler? I had oily antifreeze so I wanted to switch the gasket. The parts store even sold me two of them saying my car takes two. I can’t see anything that resembles an oil cooler down there though. The oil filter attaches directly to some kind of housing
So I took my car to the shop on Friday. They confirmed it's not the head gasket (and they were done with the correct gaskets)!!! Hooray! But I still have an oil leak, and oil pressure problems (only at low rpm/while breaking). Before I have them drop the oil pan and replace the pickup tube, do you think this can be my source of pressure problems?
Does this apply to a 2000 Fortester L? Looked underneath and looks like the filter screws right into the block... Should I suspect bad head gasket if this is the case?
+Andy Opshinsky only the o-ring that comes on the oil filter. The filter should spin directly onto/against the block. You may have an external head gasket leak, causing oil to leak down onto the filter.
MrSubaru1387 . yeah. i have 2014 subaru outback . when open the hood i don't see any oil cooler only two line connect from the radiator though the transmission .
if you losen the two hoses that connects to the oil cooler will it make a mess (oil/coolant) spill im only asking cause i need to replace the same ring but my 02 sti oil cooler is positioned differently
+Manuel Guerrero-Morales you should still do able to change it on the STi without removing the coolant hose. Coolant will drain out if you remove hoses.
I have a 2005 Outback H6 VDC. Do you know if an oil cooler gasket leak (or any other kind of oil cooler leak) could introduce oil into my coolant? I have oil in my coolant but no coolant in my oil and I'm really hoping it's not a HG problem.
@@MrSubaru1387 right, so an oil cooler problem can cause oil to enter my coolant? and would the gasket failing cause that, or does it suggest an internal failure of the oil cooler itself?
Hay I have a 2000 Subaru Outback. Do you have a problem with the drivers side. Blinker light flickering on and off when you turn it on. I put a new one in and it worked for five minutes and started to flicker again. Do Subaru’s have a problem like that.
It was the turn signal light or the marker light? No, not a common issue. Bad connection? Corrosion in the socket? Did the wires look damaged?(burned/cracked/melted)
Thanks for the direct instructions! No 10 minute explaination about what you're doing, just the work, I appreciate that.
+Peter Spinale glad you enjoyed the video. 👍

So good dude! Most people say to drain coolant as well but with your video I didn't have too!
Yea, it is an unnecessary hassle. Glad to help!
I’ve just change oil.. and now leak!!🤬🤬
Thank you for your videos!
Bye from italy
Same here! So annoying I just spent 40 on new oil.
Nice tutorial, will be doing this on the H6 LIberty next oil change. Leaking tiny bit of oil around there. Good practice.
Thanks from Australia!

This was more helpful that the other videos I seen . thanks.

Cool video. I'm gonna do this. The birds chirping were relaxing
Thanx for quick respond. You videos are helping a lot.Keep posting your great vids.

One of the best instructional videos I have seen. Thank you for doing this. I have a 2004 Outback H4 that I need to change this gasket on.
+MrSoulMonk glad that you enjoyed the video.
Great video! I was waiting for you to talk but I paused and read and observed which was just as good. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

Me as well - 07 Tribeca, did the idler & tension pulleys
Great detailed video. I'm getting ready to do this on my 07 Tribeca. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Dude is so smooth
Didn't realize the H6 had a stock oil cooler. Now I have a new item to hunt for on junk cars. :D
good video might be my problem on my 2011 Tribeca occasional topping of my oil.

Can Mr.Subaru make a video on how to change the oil pressure sending unit #25240KA041 for a 2002 Subaru Outback H6 3.0 please.
Suggestion you should do a video of servicing the cooling system. I've heard that bleeding these can be a pita and can be prone to overheating
Brian Skinner just check the secondary tank after a couple heat/cool cycles, top it up, you should be good. Anytime I overheat I find I need to top that one up. When cool of course.

Where did you get the oil fill funnel?.? Nice job...I’m changing mine soon
2005 outback 2.5i have this issue as well? I'm going to look at one tomorrow and the owner says it leaks about 5 quarts a month??
Question. Do you not have to clean up the surface on the other (mating) side of the o ring?
Is this a fix for an after market oil cooler set up as well?

Question why do a lot of people switch from 5w-30 to 10w-30 on these H6 Outbacks and is it even good to switch ?

Where did you get that bolt badge ?? I want to put one on mine I’ve got a 04 Outback ll bean
i dleted my oil cooler, but its still leaking, could my block have a crack in it?
Grate video =D Thanks.

Possible leak on my 3.6r legacy. Seems to dripping from the passenger side fender. Hope this is what it is
Awesome channel and videos! Quick question, does the 2008 impreza n/a have an oil cooler?
+Luis E Santiago pretty sure it doesn't.

I can’t see anything that resembles an oil cooler down there though. The oil filter attaches directly to some kind of housing
It shouldn't. Believe only turbo cars, foresters, and H6 vehicles had oil coolers.
@@MrSubaru1387 ok that makes sense. Weird that Oreillys had a part for it.
Can coolant get in your oil if the cooler goes bad? Thank you
Yes.
I'm leaking a ton of oil now, hoping it's this and not an external head gasket
So I took my car to the shop on Friday. They confirmed it's not the head gasket (and they were done with the correct gaskets)!!! Hooray! But I still have an oil leak, and oil pressure problems (only at low rpm/while breaking). do you need to drop the coolant in order to do this job? is there enough play in the hoses?
2006 EZ30R
You shouldn't need to drain coolant or release coolant hoses.
Great video! What type of emblem is that (with the lightning bolt) and where can I get one?
+Mikel Whois that's the JDM Legacy grill
Nice.. ima need that!
Does this apply to a 2000 Fortester L?
Looked underneath and looks like the filter screws right into the block... Should I suspect bad head gasket if this is the case?
Could be a leaking HG, rocker covers, oil pan, cam seal, etc. Hard to say.
@@MrSubaru1387 okay, what would you recommend as my first step?
Might be time for a rebuild this summer since it's pushing 200k right now.
UV dye in the oil is the easiest way to locate the leak.
I know that I have to replace my "oil filter adapter gasket" is it a possibility that this is the same thing? just a different name for it?
+Blake Emery it is
thanks!
same exact car oil in coolant but no coolant in oil and no bubbles in coolant reservoir
Could be a blown oil cooler.
Getting drips on my filters on an 07 Legacy na. Is there an O-ring of some sort for non turbo 4 cylinders?
+Andy Opshinsky only the o-ring that comes on the oil filter. The filter should spin directly onto/against the block. You may have an external head gasket leak, causing oil to leak down onto the filter.
with the new model they have water cooler or something. is it better? may i ask.
+Nhu Bui you're asking if newer Subarus have a different oil cooler set up?
MrSubaru1387 . yeah. i have 2014 subaru outback . when open the hood i don't see any oil cooler only two line connect from the radiator though the transmission .
Hi,MrSubaru1387,did you apply motor oil on a gasket before installation?
A slight film.
With this issue will it send oil into my coolant? That's what is occuring in my WRX
No. If oil and coolant are mixing then you have a bad oil cooler, internal leak, or a blown head gasket.
Okay thanks for your reply
On H4 engines, is it a 22mm or 24mm as well to remove the oil cooler? I could swear my ej251, it looks like a 22mm..?
Should be the same on both engines.
@@MrSubaru1387, Hmm, and I was looking for a 22mm deep socket yesterday. Thanks
Hello, does the 96 legacy 2.2 have this oil cooler ring as well?
No.

+Manuel Guerrero-Morales you should still do able to change it on the STi without removing the coolant hose. Coolant will drain out if you remove hoses.
MrSubaru1387 why not just use a vice and crimp them?
+Michael Hinchey why take them loose at all and make the extra work of topping up the coolant and burbing the trapped air back out?
MrSubaru1387 True. I shouldn't of used the word "why". Just giving another way to tackle this..
I have a coolant leak at the same area but I need to flush the coolant anyway so I'm going to drain it and remove. Subaru Tribeca

Why 6qts of oil? I thought it takes 5.7?
Mine usually takes 6 whole qts to register as full on the dipstick. 3/10th of a qt of oil won't hurt anything either.
