I've belonged to the same tabletop Warhammer group for roughly 20 years. We're a bunch of retired IT guys who get together to play 2 or 3 times a week. We used to play in the shops and in local tournaments until GW went woke earlier in the year. Now we've gone our own way. Now we play in our homes, on custom made maps, with the models we've collected over the years, and where the beer is always cold. We use whichever rule sets the group agrees upon when we play. We bought 2 3-D printers so the two guys who are graphic artist types could design new custom armies for us. We didn't even watch the Tabletop gaming awards this year. Commercial gaming companies are dead to us. Actually, our wives are quite happy, because now they spend money on their stuff instead of us dropping hundreds in the gaming shops on models every month.
I became disillusioned with GenCon the moment they got involved in political nonsense after the governor of Indiana signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in 2015. It had NOTHING to do with gaming, didn't impact the convention in ANY way, but that became ALL the GenCon people could talk about.

I stopped taking my family to GenCon after I was told I could not get any service from the staff because I was wearing a shirt that supported police officers (several of whom I knew personally) that lost their lives in the line of duty. The staff said they were triggered by a shirt full of names.

I was at Gencon in 2000 & 2015. Both times it was fun. But now with leftist politics dominating all of gaming through activists masquerading as geeks, its ruined everything. We've lost comic books, movies, TV, video games, RPG's, even boardgames. I'm sick of this stuff. We need to get back to gatekeeping. Keep these activists and tourists out of our hobbies.

Went to Gencon in the 90s. Everyone just wanted to play games. EVERYONE was welcome at the tables. No one gave a crap about politics, religion or race. All we cared about was what cool new games there were to see and play. I've got wonderful memories. I feel sorry for the younger generations of gamers that have to put up with all the activist BS.
That was during the Gen X era of people who didn't get offended by everything, had a general IDGAF attitude and just wanted to have fun with friends old and new. I had a complete blast at the only GENCON I went to many years before all of the woke garbage and wouldn't trade those memories for anything in the world.
I miss the old days at conventions when everyone wore nerdy T-shirts instead of alphabet mafia apparel. Everything I used to enjoy is dying, honestly I’m ready for a giant rock to smash the earth, I’ve had a good run at life, Feck It!!

Some days ago I was in a very bad mood when my beloved franchise choose to a) drop a pride edition and b) the commentators there bullied like hell to everyone they felt like non woke or not subservient enough.
Then I started thinking. I don't need them. I have up to 30 Year old understanding of the rules and the lore. I have great friends to play and talk with. I can buy miniatures everywhere. I can buy paint everywhere. Hell I can even make my own models and we can brag about how they get better and better... (or worse, but hell of a character)
Now it seems we have a new game setup based on a 1pager set of rules I wrote down on a paper during a walk in the forest (during the breaks) and we add what we like.
PLEASE DON'T GIVE UP ON YOUR HOBBIES!
Give up on the "political commissars and zealots and power hungry people infesting them".
Now every time I order a miniature I have the "no money to them" high.

My home which we bought 25 years ago I'm paying $2000 a year on--that's less than one bedroom apartment rent here but it's worth $1.7 million. That's an effective property tax rate of a little over 1/10th of 1%. My dad pays $10,700 a year in Texas on his house which is only worth half a million. I paid $4k in state income tax, so the difference is $4700 in my favor.
As for Kentucky, they pay an effective rate that's 10% higher than California's rate, but they pay less because doublewide trailers on less than an acre don't sell for very much.

Feeling bummed right now. Apparently Origins Game Fair is also affiliated with Gen Con. I was making plans to go to, but I will never support these losers.

I was wrongfully banned from Gallifrey One in Los Angeles. The board that runs it will listen to every crybaby who complains about anyone who doesn't fit their toxic entitled rhetoric. I got falsely accused of "harassment" because I did a cosplay of The Doctor as a Pimp. They never allowed me to appeal my case or even speak in person because to them I might as well be Johnny Depp and they are Amber Herds. The women who made the complaint against me are notorious for holding grudges with anyone they disagree with and they do it in the name of speaking out against body shaming. they invent bogus accusations to get people in trouble because the organizers think they are "victims." One idiot who Cosplays as the Master totally shamed another attendee and sketch comedian for Cosplaying as Dumbledore. These people don't want Diversity. They are just creating their own hate.

My worst crime is merely bad taste and being myself. I borrowed that from the late Larry Flynt. .I can be crass but I don't harass. I am also working on my own original sci fi(not fan fiction) but I worry my work will get skewered by DEI overlords who think I don't put enough LGBT people in my story even though my Latina(or am I supposed to say Latin X) main character had a lesbian friend and grew up with a nanny who is is modeled after the late Leslie Jordan. I attended GenCon as a teenager in 1994, and I had always wanted to return. I'm not likely to do so now, my sights are set on the growing small cons that are springing up.
The OSR have cons that are springing up all over, and they are dedicated to the roots of TTRPG's and paying homage to its creators and contributors.
Check out: Gary Con, ArneCon, North Texas RPG Con, VengerCon, CleriCon, Otto Con, etc.
They are smaller than GenCon by a large margin, and that's a good thing. When you weed out all the wing-nut activists you are left with a much smaller group of cool people. The kind you'd like to hang out and game with.
And one of the best parts of these smaller cons is the networking that happens. This networking allows you to connect up later to play online, and connect to support and advice to start your own local game, or even your own Con.
These little Cons are a big part of how Dungeons & Dragons spread back in the 70's, and the OSR is doing it again.

GenCon has historically been run by middle aged, middle class white guys, that is until it was taken over by WOTC, and now it is the realm of the WOKE. (I have personally attended about 30 of them, but only one since they move to Indianapolis, and over a dozen Origins).

I've always wanted to go to GenCon, but I do believe my time has come and gone. I just want to check out cool games, maybe get to play a few cool games, and see all the awesome merch and cos-play. I don't need political garbage shoved down my throat. What happened to these younger generations who don't seem to understand that just because you don't agree with someone doesn't mean you need to hate them and turn and try to destroy their lives?! I think I definitely missed the window for a fun GenCon and it bums me out.

A more real world, real history question... how do you conduct a table top wargame concerning the American Civil War, World War II, any colonial conflict from the Sepoy Rebellion, the Zulu Wars, the Mahdist Uprising, the Boxer Conflict or even Alexander the Great's conquests and avoid "hurting the feelings of those who were only removed from the real conflict by hundreds if not thousands of years?" Not to mention the Vikings...all those Nordic types ravaging all the way into Russia (which actually derives its name from the Vikings), conquering Sicily...pretty much anything with the word "Norman" connected... you get my drift.
I saw Max Hardcore at the 2004 GenCon in Wisconsin while I was outside smoking a cigarette…him and the girl wearing daisy dukes were later filmed upstairs in a parking facility…I didn’t witness the filming just the initial meeting. Woke or not? That parking scene was filthy…I’ve watched it several times since 🙄(whistling)

I have never been to a Worldcon, but I have no interest in going to science fiction conventions any more because they have become very political. I have no interest in getting involved in an argument about politics or gay pronoun crap or any other irrelevant nonsense. I just want to enjoy science fiction. Also, it's fun to joke around, so if someone said "free Palestine" I'd probably say "well, if it's free I'll take some" or some such and piss him off. So I just say screw it, I'll just stay at home and read books or watch old science fiction films and television shows on DVD. But I think it would be amusing if someone invented an SJW game with actual race cards and victim cards and so on.

It used to be meet your favorite creators maybe see a preview of a show or movie that has characters from your favorite properties then merch tables & booths and cosplay events dude if Disney Land and World wasn't already full of adults without kids I would say it is sorta like adult nerds Disney Land or World
I have enjoyed going to Gencon every year doing LARP and other activities I am kind of glad that I couldn't make this year due to finances since getting to avoid this.
Back in the day, me and a friend used to run games at regional gaming conventions at least 3 times a year and there were people of all races, preferences, religions, etc who went there to have fun. It is sad to hear that the cons have been hijacked by woke weirdos who seem to never be satisfied until they destroy whatever they touch. If they are following the usual script, when GENCON ends up being permanently shut due to their antics driving away attendance, they will blame the gaming normies with accusations of racism, sexism, [fill in the blank]phobia, etc.

Because (for all that they call anyone who opposes them "fascists") these people _are_ fascists who are, by definition, totalitarians (and now, with all their "from the River to the Sea, Palestine should be free (of alive Jews)" antisemitic fecal matter, their fascism is even more apparent). EVERYTHING, every aspect of culture, must be brought under the umbrella and made to preach the Gospel of Woke, the Gospel of Socialism, the Gospel of the State. That includes tabletop RPGs, fantasy, and sci-fi, as much as soap operas, professional sports, car dealerships, heavy metal music, big box stores, and your corner delicatessen.
And to that end they will invade every corner of culture and impose their screwed up version of "morality" on everyone who enjoys those corners of culture.

Didn't realise you had been banned by World Con. I have been to two. Was paid for New Zealand before the Fuchi Flu became a thing. In hindsight I am really glad I requested a full refund.
Hugos are awful. Attempted to do my reading homework for 2019 and regret the purchases. They were bad and even 5 years ago they were clearly ticking boxes.
Step one: select cynical moral high ground

Step four: replace it's leadership with your own
Step five: enact policies sympathetic to perpetual revolution
Step six: repeat till communist utopia or something

None of them know what they are saying. This is the frustrating thing about it all, they come across as uneducated to the region they are screeching about.
It's a shame. When I was a kid D&D was my social group. We cheered anyone who wanted to play. All were welcome since we weren't welcome anywhere else. I moved to Europe in my early 20s and found a group of players that became a family for many years. All at different stages in life, dreams, and aspirations. I sorely hope that gencon, wotc, or whoever it is can steer things to a place where the gamers, at least an old one like me, can be proud of.

Would be much more logical, if the bunker is gestating whole platoon of boys/men and group of girls/women. Single person is unnecessarily vurneable, group is much less vurneable.

Well, that was a dumb thought based on a non-political definition of liberal. Makes as much sense as complaining that epic music isn't over 20th level.
Liberals hold open the door for communists and fascists. They don’t believe in a tradition and appeal only to freedom.
So communists and fascists just lie about their intentions and say someone is oppressed and need more freedom. So liberals pave the way and let them in. Then the liberals are shocked when they get put up against the wall. Germans were oppressed by the Jews, the liberals held open the door for the “solution” the Russians were oppressed by the tsars and duma the liberals held open the door for “equality”. Etc.
Rinse and repeat.

Eventually they will encounter someone that will use actual hostility, "to make their point known." Even though I don't agree with these people I hope that angels watch over them when they eventually meet those they so fervently support.
