Yeah. I got those at a military surplus store. They were new in the box. They made the model 5 i tested easy to tolerate even though I could feel my insides moving around when I ran that thing. Running the thunderbolts with the small vaccum blower for air is really not horribly loud.
@MegaCophater It's not muted. There is a towel sitting in the horn but it's not even blocking 1/4th of the opening. It wouldn't be worth it to drag all the stuff out there again and do it without the towel in it. It wouldn't sound any different.
Driving through Newberry, SC, one Saturday about noon, I heard one of these doing alternating wail. Didn't know what type of siren it was, till years later. I spotted it on top of the one of the buildings in downtown.
I remember when the town I grew up in had one of these, or a similar model of the Thunderbolt. The thing sounded fantastic even after all of the years it was in service. Then they replaced it with a Whelen WPS-2810 and things were just never the same. It just didn't have the same grunt.
Every siren in the city of Muskogee, where I live, were all thunderbolts. They replaced all of them in 2016 with 2001s, and it's really just not that interesting anymore.
Why not try reading the video title? It's doing the signal named in the video title . I'm doing this manually with the RCM switch and timer. A 1003 can do a signal like this if it's set up to do it by the way.
@LouisvilleTorn8o Another reply to this-- Without the horn it's not nearly as loud and it sounds ridiculous. I can't imagine how ridiculous it would sound with the blower running and no horn installed. I'm sure not going to go through the hassle and work to try to do that in my garage.
How loud would that thing be if you took the horn off of it and ran it with the single phase Thunderbolt blower? Would it still be too loud for your neighbors?
@vanamonde2 I've always wondered just how much louder having the horn on it makes it, and whether those distortion-like high harmonics are caused by the blower alone, or the displacement of air in the horn. Those same harmonics are definitely not there when just the chopper is running, or when a less powerful blower is used.
I don't have anywhere to do that. The siren is supposed to be going to Georgia to be installed and put back into service. When that happens I'll get a video of it.
+BOB!theGMObanana The only difference is the flasher speed. My video is 3 years older that the earliest St Paul video so how could I have set it so it sounded like a video that was made 3 years after mine??
Well, I could do that with my 3t22B in about 2 weeks once I get the new solenoids after I put the model 2 off of the pole the 3t22 will be on, and move the 2 up on to my roof, sure. It’s flasher was already modified when I got it.
the most beautiful sound EVER
better than any 2001 that replaces it
That’s some serious ear protection right there, it’s so loud the microphone sound like it’s being blown into.

i love this siren while doing alternate wail

Can they 3d print Thunderbolt parts?
@@t41flyer I'm not so sure, but that would be very cool.
@@t41flyer no but they can make more
@@t41flyer more real parts

i live the wind-up & the attack tone & the wind-down growl
Probably one of my favorite signals.
awesome video! love how this sounds

Nice upgrade u made.
Damn that sounded PERFECT! Spot on man!
A thunderbolt 1003A does Alternate wail with Hi-Lo
?
you dont need to add "with Hi-Lo" and thats in st paul NE
Glad to see you are somewhat back on your feet! Thanks for doing the video!
siren starts up at 0:38
0:41
Chicago.... 50 years ago
Ati Blaster haha
Really.
this thunderbolt is probably about 30 years old.. the oldest 1003 that still exists is silverstreet, and thats 56 years old.
@MegaCophater That towel isn't blocking even 1/4th of the opening. It doesn't make any difference with the sound.
How loud would that thing be if you took the horn off of it and ran it with the single phase Thunderbolt blower? Would it still be too loud for your neighbors?
Interesting! Is there an established standard as to what an alternate wail would warn of?
0:39 sounded just like the richland center thunderbolt 1003 doing hi-lo
Where did you get that federal signal siren controller
@vanamonde2 I've always wondered just how much louder having the horn on it makes it, and whether those distortion-like high harmonics are caused by the blower alone, or the displacement of air in the horn. 3 videos of a thunderbolt doing alternate wail... more to come?
Alternate wail is attack + fire
Also known as wail + hi lo.
Thunderbolts don't do hi lo on the wind down. Wind up: hi lo. Wind down: Solenoids open
Tigers9596 they do look at the one in Nebraska
Tigers9596 silverstreet does it
Saint Paul NE 1003A does
Tigers9596 Caledonia, Ny Did it when they had their old thunderbolt still in service.
that alternate wail for the federal signal modulator. (hi-lo/alert)
No.
Nice windown! Sounds awesome!
My relative sounds amazing!
What does that have to do with this video?
Thunderbolt 1000AT your talking to yourself
Oh really.
This is my favorite signal :) Can you take a 1003 somewhere outside so we can hear it? Rotator and blower?
He turned off the blower so tje siren doesn't sound loud
Very nice tone!
This is the 1003 that was refurbished and put into service in Thomaston Georgia right?
Yes
nice video i like the alternate wail signal
love the wind up!
0:38 blower started
0:39 siren starts
Do you still have the Arkansas 1003?
Does it's original blower work? If yes, can you do an outdoor test video?
I don't have anywhere to do that. The siren is supposed to be going to Georgia to be installed and put back into service. When that happens I'll get a video of it.
i miss that thunderbolt
nice thunderbolt
Dude. How very Badass. . .
I can see the solenoids!
@LouisvilleTorn8o I don't know what the point of doing that would be.
You should've set the timer on the solenoids so it sounded like the St. Paul 1003. Otherwise cool video!
+BOB!theGMObanana The only difference is the flasher speed. My video is 3 years older that the earliest St Paul video so how could I have set it so it sounded like a video that was made 3 years after mine??
+vanamonde2 time travel DUH
+vanamonde2 easy! Built a time machine!
Well, I could do that with my 3t22B in about 2 weeks once I get the new solenoids after I put the model 2 off of the pole the 3t22 will be on, and move the 2 up on to my roof, sure. It’s flasher was already modified when I got it.

High-Low Wails Seven
Very cool
@AKSoapy29 I don't have a location where I can do that now.
We can see the solenoid movement
I think the siren is loader then the microphone can pick up
@sentry40V2T Yes.
I love these things course jot wen it's a real emergency meep I'd have a heart attack
