    I think a fish shape would lend itself to this great technique! Maybe a whole school of them! Have you ever tried adding mica powder to watercolor paint? I had the idea last night & will probably try it today. Exciting stuff 😄.

    THAT is the beauty of watercolor right there. I don’t know who told you not to combine many colors??
    I love how you play like Georgia.
    If you have studied color theory and understand it, you will know what colors to use and won’t get mud. Also if you don’t MIX or OVERMIX the colors many times you can use contrasting without getting unwanted colors. They just pop.
    Also different brands of paints have different attributes. Holbien is known for not flowing. If you want the body to stay more a body on the butterflies try using Holbien.

      Also, that's the funny thing, according to color theory you would think I would get mud, because I put blue, then red, then yellow then green - every primary color combined SHOULD make mud but not in this magical butterfly. In other paintings trying to duplicate this it SOMETIMES did!

    It’s awesome that you are so adventurous in your work. Too many times I’ve held back because I didn’t want to “waste my time” and or paper. How will we ever grow if we don’t take chances and experiment?! When you were working on the cat it seemed like you were simply mixing your own custom black on the paper instead of your palette. I’ve been trying to remember to do that most of the time and have had some really cool effects. It seems to mostly depend on which pigments and paints I use. I do use a lot of QOR paints that diffuse wonderfully. Interesting that the hot press paper works so well for you. I have better luck with rough or cold press- I wonder why?

    • @rachelparkervarner
      @rachelparkervarner  21 день назад

      @@dianes326 what works for one artist may not for another! I don't paint with qor paints and they have a unique formula that makes them highly diffusing, so they are probably great for this technique

    Holbein's Peacock Blue formulation is now PB15 and also PG7, it was one of my first artist grade paints that I ever bought. It's stunning, but I'm also curious about PB17. I'm tempted to buy the Rockwell one but I don't... I don't NEED more paint. Right?

    Ohh my yes you have indeed inspired me to try this as Opals are my favorite too, actually my birthstone. I love 💕 how these have turned out. Oh & thanks for sharing the tip about French Ultramarine as the darker color. I have been using both the Cerulean Blue & Cobalt Blue like you mentioned but I have been struggling with finding a good color for the darker shades. I have got to buy some French Ultramarine. 😉I have never tried it but wanted to. Now I have a good reason 😂 to buy it! Thanks again for the suggestion & great video!

      I almost never say this about buying new paint colors but there is no way I can live without ultramarine. Phthalo Blue makes dark mixes but I hate it for most painting because it's so staining.

      @@rachelparkervarner That’s what I’m experiencing with Phthalo Blue now. I have Ultramarine but not French Ultramarine. I have been curious to know & see what is the difference.

    • @rachelparkervarner
      @rachelparkervarner  22 дня назад +1

      @@colleenmcchesney1482 I LOVE ultramarine - it granulates with everything it mixes with, makes rich darks in mixes and is perfect for my technique with involves a lot of fixing, scrubbing and lifting because it's not nearly as staining as Phthalo. Once you put phthalo blue in your painting, you're pretty much stuck with it. Not so with ultramarine.

    • @rachelparkervarner
      @rachelparkervarner  21 день назад +1

      I can't live without Ultramarine - but whenever I decide to give Phthalo another chance, it takes over the painting, or my palette, or my clumsy self unknowingly puts a finger in it then I touch something and then that something is forever stained. I'm just too clumsy for it. BUT, it makes AMAZING cauliflowers and salt effects so I always pull it out in the winter when I'm trying to paint cool snow effects.
