at 12:58...leading to the 6/8 section... it is amazing how a series of chord changes like that can bring a person to their knees in tears...

Imo this is the best version of Chameleon on RUclips. The more bombastic hip hop influenced drummer (who's excellent) really lights a fire under their asses in this one

That drummer was soooooo pocket!! My God, pure talent! Bass player is straight funky! Herbie is genius, as usual! And the saxophonist has a piece of Coltrane soul in him! Awesome solo!

Don't forget that Bennie COMPOSED Chameleon as much as Herbie. He's certainly playing WILDER on this version than on the original Headhunters album!

Extraterrestrial: simply extraterrestrial!! A SCORCHING, SOULFUL sax solo POURED out by Bennie, followed by Herbie the Goliath himself. This is the LONGEST solo that I'm e ever heard him play -- a variation on his classic "4th movement from the 1973 album.
All I can say -- as invariably when listening to the Maestro's playing -- is that he seems virtually untouchable; as way out in front in terms of SHEER PUNCH as he was during the early '70s - a seamless blend of classically trained excellence, pure JAZZ FEELING as deep and hot as this planet's core, and a seemingly INSTINCTIVE grasp of hard-driving fuck.
(Having got ALL THAT off my chest, words just fail me!! 🤪😎🤩)
