Should I like this? Wait, you are playing the band that helped keep me out of Viet Nam. And yet my friends that had to go to Viet Nam were also listening to CCR. This was a band that was a product of their times, but also they contributed to breaking the mold of those times. The Military Industrial Complex was eating us up alive, as well as lots of Bayou Rats around the world, and John and CCR played meaningful music that move people. You do that as well. You are a Guitar Master, Pilgrim. You send that mood and can move people. Ok, I will smash that like button. My only regret is that I can only like it once.
A single Strat or Tele style guitar is all you need really. They are both far more versatile guitars than humbucker-loaded models such as Gibson in my opinion.
John Fogerty is a GREAT example of how you don't have to be some insane virtuoso playing licks that only a few people on the planet can play in order to play a great solo!
CCR was one of those rare bands that put out albums with no fillers. I genuinely like almost every song they ever recorded. Back when we would buy an album because of one amazing song and often realize that there's only one song on the entire album that we love, CCR was the exception.
"Ramble Tamble" blows every single one of those away. So darkly sad and sublime sounding. "Ramble Tamble" starts off as a typical CCR Rockabilly style stomp but then when the guitar solo instrumental section in the middle comes on out of nowhere is is absolutely stunning. Fogerty's epic high water mark I say.
Fogerty isn't the most technical or fastest but boy he comes up with the coolest licks. BTW what a salute to a legend. Great playing. Comes really really close to the feel and original touch of the great man.
Yes, John should get more git cred, just on that solo alone. He never did but. But he should have, same with Q, Grapevine and Chooglin. Everything right where it should be, same in Green River. Don't know why he 'talks down' most of his earlier playing now that he tries to play like Brad Paisely. He should be proud of it's gritty earthiness.
I play that solo up to the first bend & then I keep hitting the bend over & over until I see tears rolling down my wife's face. Only then do I know it's perfect. 😎 Ask her & she will say, "Help! He's trying to drive me crazy!" 🤣
When I was a young punk kid, starting to sing in rock bands, (1970's) I thought John Fogarty was only an "OK" guitar player. Eventually I came to realize that he can do more with three notes than a lot of players can do with the entire guitar. And he created his own, distinct sound . Not many can make that claim. Much respect. Also, much respect to you sir, for your incredible playing and enthusiasm!
I know that it's a matter of taste but, the solo on "Pagan Baby" is one of Fogerty's best. The track is also very underrated; it is probably one of the rockiest Revival tracks. Pure energy!!!
Man, you are my favorite guitar demonstrator on the web, not only because of the sheer energy and skill that goes into your playing, but also (and important) is that you keep the chat to a minimum to simply explain what is needed. So many others waffle on for what seems like hours before actually playing anything.
Hello. I am French. I wanted to tell you that you really are an exceptional guitarist. Capable of reproducing all styles of "pop-rock" guitar. I'm 66, I've seen and heard these guitar heroes. But I find you exceptional. I wish I had a teacher like you. You have everything. Cheer
Top 4 American rock and roll bands. (in No particular order.) The E Street Band. Tom Petty And The HeartBreakers. Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors.
I do not quite agree, that drummer and bassgitarist definitely have their own unique sound, a good band is only a good band when all members contribute, wouldn't you agree?
@@CorbCorbin Don't confuse CCR' S legal battles and later name calling with how well they worked as a band. John was the driving force by his own choice. But good music is only good music until the right players meld together, and CCR certainly melding and became one of America's greatest bands. Having had the pleasure of seeing them onstage, I was lucky enough to witness the interplay first hand. That'd the true test of a great band.
This video popped up in my RUclips recommendation for... reason. John Fogerty is such a great guitarist, very understated and also underrated. When I started learning how to play the guitar, certain CCR songs were the staples of my practice. My favorite has to be "Tombstone Shadow". That single note part of the second solo is almost a religious experience to me!
I congratulate you for your talent and thank you for showing how each song is played. There are people who find it difficult to get a guitar solo and thanks to you the path is easier. thank you
I heard an interview of JF once where he said he didn’t think his own guitar playing was that great or special. Quite the contrary! Hey man, you capture the nuances of players so incredibly well. And your apparent passion for music is inspiring. Thank you for all your hard work.
Yes! Finally CCR gets some more credit, I feel like they've been overlooked lately. They were great. I'd love some lesson videos for each of these songs.
Man, you make guitar playing fun. Sometimes, I get so caught up in trying to play too technical and forget why I started playing in the first place. Thanks.
Guitar Pilgrim your video here has me hankering to go grab my STRAT,patch into my Fender Mustang 3,rethink my approach on what to learn and get out of my guitar playing rut!
The piano solo at the end was brilliant. After the raucous "I Put a Spell on You" it was very calming to have the demons chased away by the cool waterbrook sound of the piano.
The crowd goes 'crazy' when my band plays Born on the Bayou. I just got a Boss MD 200 this week so now I can dial in the tremolo for this CCR classic. The trem is critical to the sound on this one. Thanks for this excellent post.
@@normansvideos5063 The beat for sure, Norman. Good point! I would add the 'feel' too is pretty irresistible. And in this vocal John Fogarty sings his heart out. Thinking we'll have to add another CCR song or two to our set list. Many great options.
Dig your sound, rare to see proper vintage sound these days without pedals and too much overdrive, also your videos are very very inspiring! Keep up the good work!
I saw John Fogerty in Portland, Maine in 2005. In the last chorus of Bad Moon Rising he clearly substituted "there's a bathroom on the right" instead of "there's a bad moon on the rise". I don't think most people even noticed the substitution. It was a great concert, I'll never forget it. Thanks for the video.
SUPER tutorial, Thom! I first tried to learn Lodi, start to finish (with intro, fills, bridge, & solo) when I was 16. I had a Sears Silvertone Strat and an embarrassing, southern-engineered amplification system that I, to this day, refuse to call an amplifier. I struggled with Lodi but I nailed Born on the Bayou! That was 1970. Over the years, I learned several of the songs but you’ve inspired me to return to that catalogue and master all 10 of those songs. Thanks!
THANK YOU for this episode!!! You are an incredible talent and you deserve so much credit for noticing the underrated genius of John Fogerty on guitar. I have been telling people for years that the solo of the Credence version of "I Put a Spell on You" is, all considered, perhaps the greatest and certainly the most under-appreciated guitar solo. I say this because the solo tells a story of an anguished mind filled with dismay, rage and insanity. To create a solo that fits the song so perfectly in terms of the narrator / main character is simply unparalleled. When I saw the title of your video I thought, "He's got to choose "I Put a Spell on You" as number one, but what if he doesn't!? And you did!!! Thanks!
I had probably commented on this post before but I have to tell you that this is the best John Fogarty guitar playing I've ever heard other than John himself! And even that brief singing was right on the money.
When you got to no. 3, I started worrying that you might overlook Spell on You. But no ! You have it number 1. That is one of my all time favourites of any guitar player. He was underrated. You do a great job and always inspire when I feel low about my own playing !
Pilgrim you are top notch - what a great top 10. Not really a "solo", but gotta say the opening riff for Up Around the Bend is so classic CCR and simply iconic for the period. When you hear the tone of that first open D you know what's coming and you know it's gonna be good.
Thanks for sharing these solos. I was fortunate to see Fogerty at the Red Rocks, CO last year on his 50th Anniversary tour. As one who grew up with his music when he first came out with CCR, he hasn't lost one bit of guitar playing ability nor his not being able to hit the high notes. Was almost as good as the Eagles tour to the Cap Center (MD) back in the mid 70's.
Tombstone Shadow is such an underrated song, so I was thrilled to see it on the list! I do however think that at least to me the most iconic solo is actually the second one, in which Fogerty literally plays the same note again and again and again, and it's AWESOME.
You are superb when did you start playing when you were one. You are fantastic teacher and one thing for sure I love to hear you play thank you for your time.
Awesome presentation. John Fogerty is quite fabulous. I'm so glad he went back to playing his CCR music. Wow, such a soulful, touching keyboard piece on the end of this, very emotion provoking.
BEAUTIFUL. Fabulous sounds from The Strat. Great discussion/playing and respect for the musicianship of J.F. And yes there really is a bathroom on the right.

Besides Fogerty's abilities as a songwriter. The other secret ingredient in the band was rhythm, now that's something that we as guitar players overlook. It's not about how many notes you can play, but the way you play them. I saw your video regarding Keith Richards and I think he shared a similar view on his approach to guitar playing, rhythm is key.
CCR has always been one of my favorites! I'm glad you included Cotton Fields, don't know why but I've always loved that song. Wish I could play like that!

I wish I was in one of those bars to listen to you play. I do not come close or know anyone that is that good as yourself. I am going to watch all the youtube clips you have. I just love to listen to the music I grew up too since I was born 59 years ago. Thanks again.
I’ve only just caught up with this so sorry for the late response! It’s amazing how fresh those solos sound when played today. John Fogarty is so frustrating because because when I listen and watch you play I think “Yeah, with a bit of work I could learn and play that” but how did he come up with them in the first place? He uses no special playing technique or effects but each time he creates a fantastic little composition. Genius! Thanks for a great video.
