Some sort of hammer, a carpenters chisel, a cheap block plane. Those would have made my list.
A jig saw is a great addition. Works for breaking down lumber as well as cutting curved parts. You can’t underestimate the ability of curves to step up the appeal of a project!

Bought the skill tablesaw after your review and never regreted it. Now it's the main tool in my workshop.
I'd definitely add a super accurate square of some sort to check the accuracy of the table saw and other tools. Also, a drill guide of some sort to ensure that holes are dead square to whatever you're drilling.
Great video as always and a very good list of suggestions. Only thing I would add would be PPE, which is always important, first and foremost.
Something that always seems to get missed on these lists is bits. You have a drill and a driver, but no bits for it. Router, but no bits. You can get ones that are reasonably inexpensive (good for a beginner), but that will add to the cost.
It was thinking something similar, but this is a list of tools. Bits would be considered accessories. But that would be another great video for beginners.
For drill and drive bits DeWalt makes pretty solid ones at a low price. Project Farm's tests of their drill bits hasw them consistently come up pretty close in performance to really expensive ones.
You can get a pretty comprehensive 30-piece impact bit set for $10 and a 21-piece drill bit set ranging 1/16th to 1/2" for $20. So $30 for a pretty good head start on your tools.
snag some yonico router bits it your on a tight budget or you plan to abuse it, otherwise grab whiteside and support usa
Yeah my bits cost 2-3x what my (cheap, corded) router cost.
I would add a jigsaw into the mix.
Also the first project for many people is a work bench/table. Include the cost of some materials for a basic work bench.
Yeah jigsaw was one of the first things I bought after my circular saw. Making curved line cuts is in some beginner projects I look at.
You missed 1 VERY important tool for every shop.......a pick up truck to get the plywood and boards for whatever you're building!!!!

I would argue that a miter saw is essential for a beginning woodworker, more so than a table saw.
Just speaking from my personal experience, while the table saw is unquestionably the more versatile and essential of the two, it’s also more intimidating and, again speaking for myself, I hesitated to use it quite a lot when I began a little over a year ago.
During that time I leaned heavily on a little Craftsman sliding miter saw that ran on their V20 battery line (this was also because I’m in an apartment garage with only 1 outlet).
With that saw I made several smaller scale projects and some shop furniture both for my home shop and for my boat shop parts room at work.
I also recently became a student of Steve Ramsey’s Weekend Woodworker course, which doesn’t incorporate a table saw until the third project.
My wife enjoys helping me build things but even now doesn’t use the table saw. Sorry to ramble on, but I guess the point I’m trying to make is that plenty can be made with a miter saw, and I view it as a workhorse, at least in my shop. And it is a great entry point for someone who wants to create but is hesitant to jump right in using a table saw.
True. It’s easy to forget how intimidating these things can be when starting out! Even my Ryobi miter saw scared the b’jeebies out of me the first 20 times I pulled the power trigger button. It gave me a very healthy respect for the power and danger of these tools.
Track saw, Band Saw, thickness planer.
Add in a drill press and some quality hand tools and you've got a shop.
A cheap table saw is not a good idea unless you are into carpentry.
For fine woodwork it is pretty much useless.
You don't need it until you need one and a portable is not going to do the job.
I think the reason is everything you can do on a miter you could probably do on a tablesaw with a jig. But many things like straightening an edge cannot be done on a miter.
Don't sleep on the 12v Skil combo kit! My only complaint is that their stand alone tools should be in the 60-80 dollar range. Hope they continue this line.
My advice would be figure your next project. Buy only what you need for that job. This video is still great for picking specifics
There are probably some hand tools that should be considered, like a flush cut pull saw and a basic chisel set.

What an awesome idea for a video! This would be a great starter pack for someone to start their woodworking journey. The best part is that you’ve used all of these tools. I’d add some chisels to this list, but if you want some good ones, you’ll have to spend a decent amount

I have the skill skill saw. It’s a really nice machine. For a beginner, novice or pro this is a good addition to anyone’s collection!
Especially if you’re on a budget and not a seasoned wood worker, cordless brushed tools will destroy themselves if you push them. Brushless saws won’t cook themselves as you try to get the last bit out of that battery.
MANY times you can find the power tools at pawn shops, facebook marketplace, thrift stores. I bought a Porter Cable buscuit jointer for $25 at goodwill, 6 hp Shop Vac brand shopvac for $25 at Habitat for Humanity Store. Shop vacs are common to thrift stores, I've picked up several and use them for dust collection. At a Pawn Shop I picked up that Dewalt / drill impact with charger and 2 batteries for $80. I also picked up a craftsman 10 inch table saw with a cast iron top $60 off of Facebook marketplace. I spotted a Dewalt 735 planer for $200 from a 2nd hand tool shop. Ryobi Drill press for $80. Just last week I saw a craftsman table saw in Habitat For Humanity store for $100, and a craftsman router table (with router) for $40. Shop around before you buy new.

Combo Square and a pocket hole jig. Also a AWL to start the drill point from wandering.

Love the video, I would just add a short fallow up video how to pick safety equipment ( hearing, mask, and glasses), drill bits, also glue, and screws. But I guess that's more of personal choice as to what you are working on. As those are still needed things for wood working.

And, as one other commenter mentioned, a workbench, or tools and materials to make one. And it needs good work-holding features, including a planing stop.
One more thing. I learned woodworking from an old master. I asked what tools I should get to start His advice was to get sharpening equipment. No one mentioned sharpening equipment yet.
And what about a band saw? It was my third stationary tool, after a table saw and a drill press (oops; I neglected to mention the lathe, but that’s a separate matter).

I would recommend a Kreg AccuCut with the expansion pack. When you mate it with the circular saw, you get a very useful tool. Once I got one, I was able to make much more accurate cuts on larger pieces than I can trying to wrestle them through my contractor size table saw. Every time I use it, I think about the value to cost ratio. It is excellent.

Just picked a nice one up at Harbor Freight for $50. Drill Master Pocket Hole Jig.
I am a big Milwaukee fan-boy and have thousands of dollars of Milwaukee corded and cordless power tools. But I have a DeWalt 1/4 sheet sander that is my favorite go-to sander for everything needing sanding. I have several other sanders that are just taking up space in my cabinet.

One subject you completely missed. Shop safety. Beginners often don't know or realize what protections they should have.
Safety glasses, ear muffs and dust mask are required PPE if anyone ever does work with me.
If you have the budget I recommend the Bosch that you can butt up against a wall for a miter saw. If you have minimal shop space, plus it has a laser.
You should do segments where you compile random tool/workshop fails with commentary.
That would be a good series.
The jig saw is a must!
The Milwaukee M12 drill and impact driver set regularly goes on sale for $99 enough power for 99% of my fairly heavy use and they are small and lightweight
I use in my shop the Fastcap Flat Back as it lays flat on your project
In over 20 years I’ve do not recall ever using the variable speed on my Random orbit sanders

Nice list! The only thing I would add is a good bit set for the driver and drill, and maybe the router. And PPE and marking tools like pencil or grease pencil but those probably aren't worth counting dollar-wise as they are inexpensive.
Agreed, especially on the router. Routers with bad bits are just dangerous smoke machines.

I have a very small shop and when I started out I had everything corded even the drills/drivers. You can shave about $100 or more (depending on the deals) just on a corded drill system.

You should put a jig saw on there. You need the ability to make curves easily and inexpensive.

I would have compromised somewhere and got a track saw maybe the ridged you reviewed for breaking down sheet goods it would be one of my first buys.
I got the Craftsman aat Lowes for 99.00 apair drill driver and i had to redeck 3 48 foot tractor trailer flatbed trailers i did all 3 and they held up good and i am still using them 6 month later for the price they are good

Ran into a weird thing with my ryobi OnePlus circular saw today... It did not want to cut all the way through a 2x4, left just a little bit of material underneath despite being adjusted all the way. I wonder if the OEM blade is THAT bad. I'll be getting a diablo soon anyway.
hey id actually recommend the bessey quick clamps over the irwin ones, as they come in a set of 4 like the irwin, (2x6inch, 2x12inch) but can also be used as a spreader. the spreader is useful for glue ups if u don't have a lot of longer clamps, because you can take a 2x4, attach a small block to one end with some screws, then about 5-6 inches longer that your glue up, add another block. make a few of these and then place your glue up on them, then use your spreaders to apply the clamping force. I probably wouldnt recommend this for higher end woodworking, but in a pinch it will probably do. you could also use the 2x4 clamp things to hold longer pieces together. Great video man!

I TOTALLY agree with putting the table saw ahead of the miter saw. The first thing I bought was a miter saw. I gave it away within a month of getting my table saw. Never used it any more. Also, haven't missed it since I got rid of it. Table saw does it all and I can use the space that the miter saw was occupying for other stuff now.

If I may be so bold as to add one thing...... My wife talked me into picking up some decent corner clamps. I don't know how I've been a wood worker and not used these. They are only about 40 bucks and now I think they are essential!! Great video Matt!!

Some sort of hammer. It could be a mallet or claw hammer. To me, this is a must.
I started off with a Ryobi combo kit that came with 2 1.5mah batteries and a charger, a tote bag, a 5 1/2 circular and driver and drill, and included a free tool only pick from a limited selection which I chose a jig saw with (I regret this choice, I’d have been much happier with the multi tool had I had any idea what that thing did). Anyways I walked away with all that for less than $300CAD.
I grabbed my old Stanley tape measure and 12” level from when my wife and I were hanging pictures.
My next purchase was a speed square with scribe helpers, I went “big budget” with this one knowing it’d last forever and got a beautiful Milwaukee one, a set of carpenter pencils, a set of calipers, and a right edge all for about $70CAD together
After building a Saw horse and knowing I was going to be building exterior structures and garden ties, I opted to run out and grab a miter saw next and walked away with a corded Ryobi 10” sliding compound which I really love ❤️ I then took the opportunity to grab a combo square and a set of bessey trigger clamps. Got all that for $250CAD
Friend of mine donated to me a 48” empire straight edge 🙏
Just yesterday my first Kreg purchase arrived, which is a rip cut guide for circular saws. Though I hope to grab that DeWalt Table Saw one day, I checked out the Ryobi one and I agree that that fence is trash :(
Anyways I’m about $750CAD into this new hobby and I need to start justifying it by building a $35 night stand my wife found on Amazon 😂

😂, That $35 nightstand will end up costing you more by building it! My wife has been asking me to buy a new dining room table years ago. Last year I finally got around to building it since it's cheaper than buying it.... Although it was cheaper, it did cost more as I bought more tools I "needed" for the project.
Now I will be building a Corona Coffee Table next. That is whenever I have the actual time to buy the materials.

But I also find the tools to be a fun investment into opening doors of possibilities, so I don’t count that towards the “building the nightstand” “cost” as it were (if I did, I’d drive myself insane 😂)
@@LinoBarrazamaybe cheaper to just buy it made already. But you can make it your own and get much more enjoyment from it. Look up Steve Ramsey's drawer organizer build for the perfect example.
@@davegravel3740 I definitely did get that enjoyment. It was a farm table. For the base of the table I did a full char and scraped it off then sealed it. The bottom of the table top, I did the full char as well. The top and sides of the table top I just burned the grain. I did everything similar for the benches.
@@davegravel3740 I agree, and exactly. I can sit here and try all day long to compete with the prices of Amazon, or I can build my family hand made custom stuff that you can't just buy off the shelf made by machines with no love or care. The value is in the sentiment that hopefully outlives me.
For just starting out, they could save $50 - $100 by just getting a cordless drill without the impact driver. When I started out impact drivers weren't a thing yet and I got by just fine. Spend that $100 on a better saw blade, some drill and driver bits, and sandpaper.
I'd take a jig saw over a skill saw. But the rest is good. Add the safety gear also
The only tool that scares the bejesus out of me and alway's has is the circularsaw, its possibly one of the most dangerous things I've ever owned and honestly if and whenever I need to use it i alway's opt for using my tracksaw i find it way way safer to use!!!

Is it just me or am I the only one who has never used a tape measure in wood working?
You’re not alone. I don’t use a tape measure for woodworking; I use various kinds of rulers, including a folding rule. A tape measure is for carpentry; woodwork is different.
But a tape measure is good for other things, as I noted. Also, get a 16-foot tape. The standard that most people use us 25 feet. With that, you are lugging around extra bulk and weight that you hardly ever need. It may be good to have a25-foot tape for when you need it, but for 99% of the time, a smaller tape is much more convenient.
I agree, pocket hole jig… and a jig saw for curved cuts. Maybe downgrade the clamps to the HF clamps to save some $$ for a jig saw.
Hold off on the table saw and get a mittersaw. The circular saw cam do the same as table saw for the most part.
Also you dont need an impact for woodworking. Get a drill/driver. I have several Milwaukees but i go to the skill drill 90% of the time it is lighter and strong enough for most things cabinet woodworking.
Advantage of pipe clamps is that if you get pipe that is threaded on both ends, you can add another length of pipe if you need longer clamps for something.

I have 3 tape measures and I am not a wood worker but still enjoy ur videos.. and all 3 tape measures have loose hoke slot somehow.. so I would fail on the first step itself 😂
These are good recommendations, but if you are a beginning woodworker, then I do NOT recommend either a table saw or a trim router. I say this as someone who, for the first ten years or so of my woodworking adventure, did not own either tool, yet I was able to build some very nice, useful projects (to be clear, I'm not recommending that you wait as long as I did for these purchases). Both of these tools, honestly, can be very intimidating to a newbie. Forget the spinning blades and bits that appear to be coming for your fingers; the noise alone is enough to ruin a good pair of shorts. I would instead suggest, in addition to the circular saw, a jig saw; I know that many dislike them, but with the quality tool and good blades, they can be very useful. I would also point to the HomeMade Modern channel run by Ben Uyeda, who rarely uses a table saw and finds clever ways to cut with the grain, all while making eye-popping modern home furnishings.
Love the list except the table saw. My reasoning for that is you can get some very inexpensive clamps and track from Amazon and make several jigs for the circular saw that will be just as good as a table saw and a bit safer as you can clamp most pieces and not have your hands near anything. Once you have an understanding of tools and how to use them then I would step up to a table saw. Just my opinion as that is basically what I did as I didn’t have the budget or space for a table saw and the jigs can be hung on a wall out of the way.
I started with a drill and impact as my first a skill saw 2nd jig saw 3rd plainer 4th sander 5th and I got a tape after that I make counter tops so I wouldn’t change the order I did stuff in
OK. The verdict is in. I got my five tools from Temu in China. Took about a week to get them. This is what I got and what I think. Five rolls of green tape. $5.84. I thought it would be like Frog Tape. It wasn't and the rolls were tiny. A rip off. Ten little flat brushes with blue handles. Smaller than expected, but they were OK for 83 cents. Combination Square, inches, yellow. $5.59. Excellent for the money. Red Aluminum Precision measuring ruler. 12". $7.98 Accurate. Good for the price. Carpenter's Speed Square, Aluminum. 3.99 Worth the money. So, my final verdict is, you have to be careful. Do not buy tape. The rest was fine and arrived in 6 days. They flew it direct to NJ, and then delivered it from there to my house by ground, about 100 miles away.
Tonight, I got on the Temu site and contacted their customer service via chat. I asked for my money back for the tape, which they refunded to my PayPal account without questions. I will buy from them again.

The DWE7485 comes at a great price but there are two problems with it - the knob to adjust blade height does not stay put throughout the cut. The knob rotates as the saw vibrates and settles with the habdle in the downward position causing blade height to change during dado cuts. The other problem is that the saw can't be put into an outfeed table because of the way DeWalt has designed the handles
i found ridgid sliding miter saw 12 duel the new one on clearance for 190 at home depot, is it any good?

Here in the UK, its sad powertools are so more expensive, the dewalt tablesaw alone is around £470 😢
Yeah in UK we are charged ridiculous amounts for the virtually the same products! $299 is roughly £235 So double the price! It's scandalous!

DWS780 is an "upgraded" version of the 779. Basically you get a cut line with the 780 and not the 779.

Where is the recip saw? I started out woodworking cutting out shapes ditch the quick clamps for recip saw. Also one needs to finish the project smooth so a belt sander.
Pro tip: read the manual on that Skil circular saw. I didn't and kept trying to change the depth by pushing the lever in the wrong direction. Thinking the new tool was just being stubborn I broke it. Stupid trumps stubborn every time. :P
The 12” dual bevel version of that Wen saw is only $280. I have one, and it’s fantastic. No, Wen is not a new company. They’ve been making power tools since 1951, and are one of the companies responsible for the creation of power tools. They’re certainly nowhere near top of the line, but they do make great tools at great prices, for the most part.
I recently got the Skil table saw. Some RUclips reviews mention that the fence has some play in it. Mine doesn't. It clamps down tight. I'm thinking Skil fixed the problem or those reviewers got bad fences.
Jigsaw should be part of this.
Don't forget a router bit set for the trim router.

I know ya'lls live stream is about to start so i need your help. The boss Lady told me sunday get your saw table so i did. the Dwe7491 but i can't calibrate the view finder on the tape for the fence. I need it to go an 1/8th to the right but, it's already as far as it will go. is there anyting i can do? never mind i'm stupid. when in doubt read the manual.

This video is old to you 😔 m sure but new to me and now I've subbed. However i do have a question. I'm neither a beginner nor a pro I'm more of a hobbiest who enjoys handmade/homemade items. Im looking for a mid grade budget friendly bandsaw as i already have basically everything you mentioned in this video and then some. Basically i can afford a Ford but not a Cadillac mor like the Dodge level.😂 As I progress through my woodworking journey I find myself more n more in need of this tool but i dont know alot about it. Please help
If you just want one to cut small parts and curves, Rikon makes a nice bench top model. If you're wanting a bandsaw to resew boards, you'll need a bigger one (floor model). I have a Rikon 14" but you can also look at the JET as well, several retailers have them on sale this month (April 2024). Excellent timing for this video. I had bought a hercules tablesaw three weeks ago and I had been struggling to get straight cuts. I just returned it today and was checking around for a better one and was eyeing the dewalt one, but I was worried about having the same issue again and decided to check youtube for reviews.
