    In Singapore we line our landfill with a clay membrane, and we have a water treatment system of reeds for the pumped out water. For the rubbish, we incinerate it to ash for compaction as well as generating electricity.

    This video is not titled correctly. It should be titled "why we should stop using landfills."
    I came here to learn how landfills work, not for someone to sell me on why they are no good. I would have just liked some nice information on how they work. Should rename this, really.

    Whoever made this video obviously has not one single clue as to what goes into making a modern landfill. Leak location pipes. Single, Double if not sometimes triple lined 100mil+ geomembrane system. 5-10' of compacted soil on landfill base and slopes to ensure and prevent punctures in geomembranes. Methane collection systems coupled with burn-off stations or energy converting stations to send to a local utility grid. All of which is then capped with another geomembrane making one entire gigantic expensive trash bag.

      Joshua Wilson Recyle or incinerate it to prevent hazardous chemicals from leaching into groundwater.

    • @writerNB
      @writerNB 9 лет назад +1

      Joshua Wilson Plasma gasification is a furnace process. Organic material (eg hazardous waste) is converted into synthetic gas, electricity and a useful by-product called "slag". (Slag can be ground into a powder that's added to cement, or manufactured into insulation fibers). Unfortunately, plasma gas plants entail high start-up costs in comparison to managing landfill sites.

      Joshua Wilson Thanks for askin, Joshua. Here's some of the ways I recycle. Store old wood in a dry place - it can be reused as fuel (or for many small carpentry jobs). Old paper (thrown out by many businesses, can be reused as notenooks). Computer parts: Eg- fans, cases, internal parts, screws (can all be reused to fix PC units and laptops). Aluminum cans- This metal is valuable- Each can is worth 1p each (in UK currency). Cardboard boxes - Can be flattened and reused when movin' house, or to deliver items. (PS: Safety first- Combustible materials like wood, paper and card MUST be kept away from naked flames. It's a good idea to have a fire extinguisher on standby, too). A site called www.instructables.com demos many inventive ways household materials can be re-used.

      +TheTruthQuest123 The crux of the matter is how we decide to "recycle". Really, it's a political matter, as recycling on an indivdual level is messy, time-consuming and has no short-term economic benefits. The long term financial benefits are, in fact, huge but it takes a political commitment that is absent from our current political priorities. We have to press our political representatives (in my country called MPs) to invest in easy to reach, well-run Recycling Plants. I dont have the figures to hand, but from memory most governments spend huge amounts on defense, policing and themselves... Recycling is way down the list of priorities.

    One thing that can be done is get rid of plastic garbage bags. I find it hard to understand that plastic is bad for the environment, but garbage bags are plastic. Things have to be done. Like removing all plastic garbage bags from the shelf. I use compostable bags myself for garbage. Change how baby diapers are made. Either make the disposable ones compostable, and make washable cloth diapers available. Many things can help. Get a bamboo tooth brush. Millions of tooth brushes are thrown away every day. In the end plastic use needs to be lessened. It was business and industry that created this mess. They employ few people and manufacture a large quantity of material. If things were made with local craftsmen and small business, it would be so much waste. Some running after what is fashionable but make what is necessary. Few garments, made with natural materials. Not cheap, fashion made with polypropylene. Five dollar shirt made with rayon, or nylon. Good for a day, and then the fashion changes and it's thrown away. It's made of plastic and will end up in a land fill. Clothing is not about fashion, it's about getting what you need for the weather. A hat, boots, coat. Some clothing to cover yourself. Get some natural materials back, and some weavers.

    Very little toxic waste goes into landfill now, it either gets recyceled or safely disposed of in a way that does not harm the enviroment. Then after landfill has come to the end of its life and is declared safe it is then relandscaped with trees, shrubs and other plants which in turn help keep the air clean. Some landfill sites have even been made into nature reserves to help wildlife :) Im not saying landfill is good but its alot cleaner, modern and can even benefit wildlife at the end.

    This is a totally bias video, landfills are one true example of renewable energy. Take that gas compress it, strip the H2S,CO2, and carbons to create a pipeline quality high BTU Methane.

      Curtis Pedigo I agree we need a balanced approach. H2S is hydrogen sulfide- in high concentrations, causing death within seconds. C02 is carbon dioxide, a so-called "greenhouse gas" that warms our planet. Levels of C02 have been rising worldwide due to our industrial activity. Methane has many useful commercial benefits, but unfortunately is also considered a "greenhouse gas". In high concentrations, Methane is highly explosive and has been responsible for various mining disasters.

      writerNB And just where is all the predicted global temperature rise? If you believe the data that NOAA conveniently amended (that previously showed no temperature increase since the late 90’s) avg global temperature has risen a mere .3 degrees Celsius since 1988, far below the apocalyptic predictions of the High priests of the Church of Global Warming.

      James Urling There's no Spring anymore in the temperate zones of the globe, as far as i know. And i've never witnessed summers this hot. I remember the transition from spring to summer, and how good the summer sun was, even at its hottest. There's isn't any anymore.
      The summer sun is unbearable now compared to the '90s.
