I was in thutikudi for six month in 1990 and went to tiruchendur ,your video helped me to remember my days in 1990 thank you
I am presently here.
Oh Tirunelveli is my family's native place! The Shiva temple there is very famous! As soon as I saw Janakiram hotel at 04:44, I started getting very excited. They serve some of the best south Indian food in Tirunelveli. Tirunelveli is a land blessed by the perennial Tamiraparani river. It is an important centre of spirituality and culture for us Tamilians.
PS you missed the OG iruttukadai [dark shop] halwa. It is called so because the shop is open only for a few hours in the evening. The shop is right opposite the main entrance of Nellaiappar temple. Interestingly iruttukadai was started by a man called Bijli Singh. This halwa used to be prepared as a nutritional supplement for the horses of Pudukkottai samasthan. Once the monarchy system was abolished, the halwa recipe was modified and sold for human consumption. The shop is still owned by the Singh family.
Avangalakku yaarume sollala iruttukadai halwa enga kedaikum
Thanks for the information brother. I will surely taste the halwa if and when I visit Tirunelveli.
Sir, I am Ambarish and I follow your channel and watch all of your travels with my family all the time. I am a native of Chennai and my ancestral native is Kallidaikurichi in Tirunelveli District. A few months ago I came to Tirunelveli for the first time with my family and visited the famous Nellaiappar Temple and also Sankarankovil which is 65 km from Tirunelveli. Request you to visit Tirunelveli town another time and not miss both the temples and also the best Halwa shop ever, the "Iruttukadai Halwa".
Thank you sir for all your videos. 😊

Shri Harish Bali ji, Arulmigu Nellaippar Kovil (Bhagavan Nellaippar Mandir) dedicated to Bhagavan Shiva is a magnificent temple with an amazingly excellent and marvellous architecture and intricate carvings made in Dravidian Architecture of Shilpa Shastra unfortunately it is less known to people other than localities of Tirunelveli. A correction. Poppadum and appalam are two different foods. Poppadum is made of udad dal and contains baking soda. It puffs up when deep fried. Appalam is made from a mixture of grain and dal. Usually bigger in size and does not puff up when deep fried. The taste is also different.
Thanks for this information

One gentleman has explained about PAPPADAM ( POPPADUM !) ( PAUPPADUM ) and APPALAAM.
Today for commercial benefits and introduction of English in our day today communication, names in advertisements have changed.
Please Google search for differences in SODIUM CARBONATE nd sodium BI carbonate ( BAKING SODA AND BAKING POWDER)
Then you will find the third classification called PAPPAD KHAR.If you search you will know that PAPPAD KHAR is a natural product from ALKALINE WATERED RIVERBEDS which chemically a combination of SODIUM BI CARB AND SODIUM CARB....plus additional flavouring agents from plants.
PAPPADAM Is a Kerala Malayalam word In south. PAPPADAM was a cottage industry by ladies of KONKANIES( GSBs) all over India.. and spread in MAHARASHTRA GOA AND GUJARAT KARNATAKA AND VERY RECENTLY IN Tamilnadu.
Ingredients for pappadam is URAD FINE POWDER, PAPPAD KHAR SOLUTION( WATER ÷ COMMON SALT SMALL QUANTITY AND FILTERED AND ST0RED AFTER BOILING AND COOLING)
FOR SOREADING A BIT OF RICE PIWDER MAY BE USED SO MOIST PAPPADS DO NOT STICK EACH OTHER. PAPPADAM SHOULD NOT BE SUN DRIED TOO MUCH MAKE IT HARD PLASTIC SHEET . Slightly foldable dryness is best..consume before it gets fungus or bad smell.
Now ,APPALAM is TAMIL BRAHMIN VERSION. INGRED7ENTS SAME URAD DALL FLOUR FINE. BUT INSTED OF "" PAPPAD KHAR" only common sea salt brine is added.NO BAKING SODA OR BAKING POWDER ( ORIGINALLY).
But now some producers do add to make tiny puffings.
Britishers confused the name PAPPADAM for APPALAM and Americans called it LENTIL CRYSPIES.
TODAYS COMMERCIAL PRODUCERS MAKE 200 VAR7ETIES OF A FUSION generally called PAPPAD and using every vegetable and colour and by most lentils and starches.
CARROT..BEATROOT..TAPIOCCA..SWEET POTATO..WHITE PITATO, JACK FRUIT, SABU DANA, RICE, CORN, OATS, DIFFERENT SPICES AND PULSES.
SO, KERALA PAPPADAM has to be specially mentioned if you want the item to puff like a ball( like POORI OR BATHURA ) and appalam is a stretched thick leathery but crisp non aromatic product.( A bit bland)
Very informative.. what I like is simple clothes of host and Harish ji is always eager to know new things

That Pongal and Halwa is really yummy and delicious.
Did that Pongal have onion in it ?
Thank You Harish Ji 🎉
Not so sure regarding onion
Thanks
Pongal does not have onion in it. The usual ingredients used to temper are jeera, peppercorns, hing, cashew and curry leaves. Some people also like to add a slit green chilli for an extra layer of spice. And ghee should only be used.
