- Hello and welcome to another video of basic fishing. This was still Day 2 but I decided to try my luck on more trout during the day. After a successful start on getting my 1st ever trout in Rotorua, I gained more local knowledge at the local tackle store in order to get a better chance on getting more rainbow trout. Honestly speaking, I thought I was going to struggle again but I was not left disappointed as I got to experience a great fishing session as I hooked onto some solid winter rainbow trout of Rotorua NZ. No doubt, I'll be back for more trout action real soon. Fish I caught were all released. Watch it in HD and watch it all the way to the end :)
For the lure I was using 10g toby spoon and 8lb Black Magic Tackle Flurocarbon

Proud of you. Your figuring it out and your at a good spot for nice trout. Hopeful you start fly fishing for those beauties
i think i'll stick with spinning for now lol fly fishing aint for me unless i use a fly as a livebait lol
Awesome catches mate all nice conditioned trout!
thanks man. yea those trouts were more than ready to spawn for sure
Good fun.
definitely
Great vid!
thank you for watching
Which part of rotorua was this?
Do you use a swivel to connect the leader and line we’re about are you
i tied the leader directly to the braid. i used a back to back uni to tie it together but you can use a swivel to get rid of line twists
If your ever around Auckland hit me up, can show you some great trout spots. Great video!
thank you for watching
i thought a spin reel are not allowed in that lake.
you are. says in the rules at least at that time. not sure what the rules r atm but hope it hasn't changed
what's the weight of your toby?cheers
10g
they do love the toby
oh yea haha its great too cause since the lake is shallow, casting far and covering lot of the water proved to be effective
Easy as when the fish are there..recommend a net.
lol got a net now so am prepared this time
@@BasicFishingNZ Makes it a whole lot easier..cheers
What lure where u using??
10g toby spinner. used blue and green
@@BasicFishingNZ sweet man. Great vid keep it up 👌
Man I hate you for making this look so easy haha I even use the same lure sometimes. I know this video is old now but do you remember what time you went fishing that day?
lol i spent almost 10months at a lake in auckland just to land my 1st trout haha while it only took some people their first casts to get their firsts XD day 1 wasn't easy cause everything went against me but day 2 i managed to get the hang of it. i fished at 12pm but gave the spot a few rests cause either i was hungry, tired or needed to get some more lures at the store
@@BasicFishingNZ Thank you so much for your quick reply!
I am not from here and I don't have any experience at fishing in freshwater. My old man has rented a house in front of Lake Rotorua and I go spinning for trout quite frequently. I never see anybody else spinning, everyone is fly fishing around here. I have a terrible catch rate so that might be the reason 😆
As I dont know know anyone around here, I only depend on tips from RUclips and from the people who work at fishing & hunting shops. But they are contradicting each other quite a lot and nothing seems to do the trick so far for me. Also what seems to work for some RUclipsrs again, doesn't work for me here. At this stage I realise that trouts in different locations behave differently and fall for different lures.
I don't think I have found the lures that do the trick here. I ve even seen the trouts following my lure and ignoring it. Same with the next 5-6 lures I might change to test my luck 🤔
Any tips you can give me for spinning in lake Rotorua?
I love your videos btw!
hmmm well due to strict freshwater fishing rules it can b hard to make ur own opportunities and you kinda have to go with the rules but heres what i'll say: find some stream mouths like you saw in the video cause trout like to gather around there to feed or to breed. also what i did in my other video was i was wading 300m out from the shore and was casting and retrieving as far as i can and that seems to work. lol wat were the hunting and fishing people contradicting about haha
also the lure i used that day was just a simple 10g spoon and i do remember one worker there told me that blue and silver was one of the colour he had success with and i used that and it worked out for me. i mean i'm still new to rotorua and i still want to experiment with different lures to see wat works and wat doesnt. i did had luck with the rapala(rainbow and brook trout pattern) but only during dawn while midday the spoon seems more to do the trick for the trout.
@@BasicFishingNZ Thanks for the tips!
As a matter of fact, the house is right in front of the Ngongotaha stream so I m fishing just outside the mouth. I'm quite surprised to see that I'm always the only one fishing early in the morning and a lot of times I'm the only one fishing at late hours. Peak hour here seems to be 11.00-16.00 which is odd cause those are the worst hours in my book 🤔
I've caught a few trouts with rapala rainbow but nothing lasts forever haha
The people at fishing & hunting contradict themselves about the colors that work, the best time of the day and the spinning technique I should use. Most of them advise me to retrieve super slowly and it's the first time I've had his advice.. hasnt worked so far haha
oh nice well at this time of the year the smelt should b running so the trout should b in a hunting mode. yea trout bite time is odd but luckily for lake or rivers there isn't any tide. problem is the fish moves a lot and you have to follow them. yea i dont blame the workers contradicting about different colours but if i have to be honest i would just go with those general style like silver: imitates small smelt plus looks like one too and on a sunny day, it can flash and get the fish's attention more although the green and gold is also the colour i got the trout with too
