So much history, So little time....... Thanks to Darren for helping to keep local and regional history alive and kicking.
This is why your channel is so important, marking the passage of time. It is nice to see a ‘roll reversal’ if you like. Instead of documenting decaying and neglected things of the past, you are now showing what could happen to those same things to preserve them for future generations. Another fantastic video Darren.
They’ve made a good job of conserving that. Thanks for showing it to us.
I remember seeing this every day in the 1990's as I drove into Leeds to work. It always looked sad, standing isolated amidst the desolation of the abandoned industrial sites to the west of Leeds. Looks like a fantastic job has been done to bring the wagon hoist back to life, surrounded now by modern buildings and a plaza. Well done to all involved on this project.
Wellington Place is a fantastic development and once complete, it could easily rival London Kings Cross & Manchester Spinningfields!
Fabulous Darren. 170 years old and now preserved . Amazing. Thank you for such an informative video. Well done.
It's nice to see important old structures restored and made available to the public.
Just stumbled on this video, I took photos of the hoist on my visit to Leeds in December 2022, amazing how the building changed since then.
I don't think many people realise the amount of history in that one building, great vid daz keep em coming
Nice one Darren, the thickness off the walls was amazing and the rubbing grooves from countless ropes from the waggons shows it was well used. Interesting that there is still a wagon hoist at Huddersfield. I recognise it now but never knew what it was (learn something new everyday). Keep on pounding those streets, Cheers DougT
A wonderful piece of restoration. Pity they demolished its twin. Thank you for sharing.
Great video Darren, amazing piece of railway history, beautifully restored,a shame the main hoist got bulldozed👍😀👌
I remember when the area was being demolished and thinking what a shame to loose all that history. It was only when I walked round the remaining tower I realised how huge it was. I am glad they made a museum out of it and will have a look round one day as well as the viaduct garden
Never knew about this Darren. It’s so interesting, love the history. Thanks for showing 👍🏻
There was a disused wagon hoist until quite recent times at the Bishopsgate goods yard in London. The depot was disused since it was destroyed by a fire in 1964.
The last time I was in Leeds, all the area around the wagon hoist were car parks with the Yorkshire Evening Post building at the end
Ooooh a Yorkshire Pullman sign... I used to work on the Yorkshire Pullman in the 1990's
I can remember the old retail park. Good memories of the Centre 4 arcade. The Laser quest was huge a lot better than the one at LA bowl
Brilliant, looks so good now its been restored. Thanks Darren.
Bin dir gerne gefolgt. Das Video war sehr interessant 😊.
Thank you ❣️
Ganz nebenbei wünsche ich dir und deiner Familie ein schönes Pfingstfest mit viel Gesundheit ❤❤
It’s great they have kept it and made a museum 👍🏻😎
The sign colours are for the North Eastern Region - the Eastern colour was dark blue.
Defo on my list when we next visit Leeds, thank you
Great video as always Darren! Nice to see Leeds putting some effort in. It'd be lovely if Sheffield would do something similar in the Lower Don Valley.
Fantastic film what does it justice. I can remember the old retail park on this site. What a change for the good
Thank you for another eye opener on something and somewhere I knew nothing about.
It's quite amazing that it's still standing by the sounds of it. I wonder what happened to the demo company when the first hoist was accidentally destroyed. Nothing probably back then.
The law was finally tightened up after too many instances of deaths of workers because there was too much of a rush and too many
"Whoops! Oh well, now the beautiful façade has fallen down somehow, we could run with this plan the developers had up their sleeve..."
Nicely preserved! Hope the powers that be keep it so. I enjoyed the video, thanks again Darren. Cheers!
Glorious sunshine and blue sky?.........are you sure that's Leeds? 🙂
Fantastic that -it was just a shell the last time i looked at it.
They have done a great job
Brilliant, thank you - cannot wait to see it. Well done. Many thanks.
Enjoyed your video footage and history,as always, fantastic X will check out the Musium,so cool
Oh now that is super cool.
What a fab video about a cracking little museum :)
This is better than what has happened to the Italianate towers, they have been hidden behind some boring modern brick boxes.
Looks amazing shame about the other one tho but what a great restoration, nice one Darren 👍
nice follow-up video from your video of 2 years back :-)
Thank you Darren 😊. It looks beautiful building now and they done great job. Yes I will go and visit this beautiful little museum. 💖
Brilliant video and very interesting, definitely will be making a visit.👍
Thanks for that Darren, fascinating video
there was one in wakefield, near Kirkgate
Orange signs were North East region. Eastern region ones were dark blue. I’m not sure exactly where the boundary between the regions was.
Doncaster were blue, sheff and area blue , Barnsley were blue
Interesting video Darren, there is at least one derelict wagon hoist still remaining in bishopsgate goods station in London
And as someone else pointed out the tangerine colour as BR called it was for North Eastern region signs not Eastern which was dark blue
When was the hoists at Central last used?
Cheers Russ
Good grief, when I started working on the railways in 1990 we could see this as we pulled out of the station on our way to London. It was in the middle of wasteland now it's surrounded with gardens.
Another fascinating video. Such a shame most of it was knocked down
Great video, thank you 🥳
Hello Darren so im not watching your latest video upload from Thorpe Park, (don't want any spoilers) great informative video from leeds
Remember toys r us in the retail park ??
Where's Jolly Giant gone? 😮😂😂😂
Nicely done Darren. Im still wondering how the wagons were able to get onto the track up at that height. Because once they are lifted up theres no track for them to sit on .
They had turntables at the bottom and top
what a fantastic video
Cracking video
Interesting piece of history in Leeds Darren. Shame they accidentally removed the other hoist tower whilst demolishing the viaduct that’s terrible.
You're certainly not just a pretty face Darren, are you? You know your stuff - and facinating it is too. I don't really know Leeds at all.
shame the other one bit the dust Darren
Should never have demolished the other one🙄
The Victorians really knew how to build and unfortunately that industry and knowledge has now been lost to so-called modernization and history.we no longer have the industry we once thrived on.utter shame the powered wagon hoist got demolished instead.
Would be awesome if they could get a like a cgi video made to show how it worked
I love museums, but even as a free one, this looks shite.
Hi Darren.Another very interesting video you done mate.I visted this place last Saturday along with the urban garden on viaduct now its all finished my videos on my facebook page.Wouldn't mind meeting up with you sometime if your ever round Leeds area again as i like following your videos.
Sounds great!
