The difference is striking, actually. When you know what to look for, it’s definitely there!

Huge difference, certainly visible to the naked eye without any training.

Oh wow, that is way more significant then I imagined. Another reason, why I'll keep buying old razors and not new production ones ;)
It would be quite interesting, to acutally look at the blankets they have at the "Gesenkschmiede", if they actually changed something.
Does it matter in the end for me? Yes of course, as I'd much rather buy a slightly imperfect but wider razor than a " more perfect" slimmer razor.
Kind like buying a tire, one has tiny imperfection which make it not run >95% even but it will go 70k miles. And the other one has close to no imperfections but only runs 50k miles.

xtrmly likely there was change of raw steel cylinders prior forging and/or die set used to smack those cylinders within (though they'll always be 115crv3, each batch has allowances %s)

I want to buy my first straight razor and gear. What all should I buy? Please advise.

So if you want a 5/8 from Dovo buy a 6/8 hahaha
Really it's sad cause that is a huge difference when computed to not only the edge but the life span. Honestly it seems many manufacturers today make decisions that are meant to shorten the lifespan of a product and products that should be repairable either have ridiculously complicated repair methods or no available parts at all. They want people buying lower quality stuff often instead of paying a premium for something that can last a user decades. Sell a $1,000 product that can last 30+ yrs vs sell $250 product that someone has to buy every 3-6 yrs.

It isn't all bad, for example look at this

I try to make EVERY razor do that, same old leather, very very few do. It never did before 2022, so materially this is now a THINNER razor, yes narrower, but concavity is the hardest thing to achieve. Plenty of wider 5/8"s out there but how many would sing like that?
