Gotta love the sound of them old Detroit's.
Well done, We think alike sir. I watched quite a few videos on making trails through the woods and wondered why nobody or not many used a drag whether it's like what you made/used or some type of heavy farm equipment towed behind an atv or truck.

Great idea for a drag. I replaced the track chains on my Case 350 crawler loader a couple of years ago, but sold the old ones as scrap...regretting it now.

Yeah, those slanted bars ahead of the windshield are called sweeps because they're designed to "sweep" laps and trees up and over the operator cab. Had an uncle killed years ago on a dozer that didn't have them. Good work!
Replace your chain on the front pad higher causing the track to dig into the ground a little more as it is dragged. You will get it to drag more dirt and fill the low spots better.

That is a great idea...plus if you got a wench you could keep it hooked to one side of the beam so when you get hung up between trees you can just engage the winch and pull the beam to one side...

I have a few of those drags.. .just the rails though.. I never had one with the pads still on them though. I also have one with a big well caseing cut in half.
That track was wore out because of the sideways pin slack. A new track could be layed on its side like that and picked up from the center and the track would sag almost none. It may also be on its last pin turn where both sides of the pins have been worn. That being said that's a really good idea using that track like that, now I'm gonna have to make one up. Thanks for the idea.

Remount the beam to ride on the ground, then weld 2 long trailing leaf springs pivoted on the beam as skids and use jacks to adjust beam height from the ground.

If you cut the beam in half and hinge pin it in the middle with a slight V to the front just like the track it would straighten while dragging but collapse when it hits two trees. I would link a chain from the tip of the beam V to the tip of the track to keep its V in shape
Hey! A suggestion - instead of hooking up to the track dead center, have a couple points to the left and right of center. If you hook up to the track half a dozen or so pads from center, then it would cause your beam to be angled and be narrower footprint for tight areas. I wouldn't cut the beam. With the beam angled, it may have a tendency to move the rocks to the side for you. You may even be able to rig up the center point of the track fixed, and do a fixed point low with a pulley to use the winch in and out to set for straight pull, and then angle the beam with winding in the winch, then leave winch slack out and the beam will go straight again and wide. A little bit of work, but a lot less work over time to unhook, winch it out of the jamb, then rehook again. I hope I stated this clear enough. I can see it in my head and it would work good for you!! I own a mobile saw mill I pull with a 3/4 ton truck, setup for a 50 to 60 inch circular blade, with a 225 HP V-8 engine. About 1 hour setup time and I will be ready to load up logs to 36 inch caliber and 12 foot long with a little extra work or 30 inch caliber and smaller 12 foot long comfortable (relatively speaking). Setup for hardwood. Conifers use a different feed rate and a different curf on the blade, but I can do it, but it isn't too efficient. I can do a 20 inch clean cut face. Makes nice mantle cuts, or for a large one piece tabletop. Did I mention I designed and fabricated the mill?? 40 foot long, 8 foot wide to transit, and it telescopes and unfolds to setup to be 60 foot long and 24 foot wide for operation. Good luck!!

should make the pull chain longer so it has more downforce as you pull, thats what i did with a system i rigged up as well, good job mate..
use a fence instead like a little square thats what everyone up here where i live uses to build hunting trails, it will work better and make it smoother
Alpha smurf a fence won't be heavy enough for what he's doing. Plus as heavy as this is it levels it well

My 1st rule with equipment is get a welder outfit , because you will need it.
try dragging that iron the other way around where the cat tracks are dragging instead of the I beam.
ya that's next - the beam behind knocks the rocks off - the other way builds the hump.

Could you just have cut the iron beam into segments and chained it together? This might help eliminate the gap and allow you to adjust the length of the beam on the fly.

Just buy or rent a box scrapper. That's all you need. No need trying to reinvent the wheel.
Sounds like this was pretty cheap, and does what he needs.
Possibly, though it looked like he had to make many passes to get it somewhat level. I used my box scrapper to make similar trails through the woods in my farm, and after clearing with a dozer, I ran my box scrapper just two passes and the trails were perfect.
A box scrapper would be a good investment for PM since he's got all those new roads to maintain.
why don't you put a crossbar where that tree came through and got the muffler? make it bolt on and be easier to remove if needed.
