    The old folks referenced here are awesome and an inspiration. I ran my first full marathon at 73 and am currently training for my first Ironman 70.3 next year in which I will be competing in the 75 to 79 AG. Two good things about finding endurance sports late in life, plenty of time time to train without distractions and much easier to get on the podium. Still feel like a young man when standing in the queue waiting for the start of an event that I know is going push me to my physical limits. I just refuse to get old.

      Brother I'm in the same boat. I was always naturally kinda fit so never had to develop any discipline in order to do the things I love (skiing, hiking, running). It was always train intensely for a bit so some crazy race then laze about for many many months. Just hit 40 and my body overnight went into violent protest against this kind of abused. Watching Mark is a huge inspiration that with just a little discipline I can still keep fit for decades to come. Stay hard on your journey man, I think we can all be an inspiration to each other 💪

      This whole thing was great but I have to say: you should have re-run the first one rather than saying “let’s assume I could have run that faster.” Of course you could have run that faster, we knew that before you even started. But then why even bother doing the ones you know you can do? In the spirit of the challenge I think you need to do the things you’re trying to do.

    Just thought I'd mention that thanks to you Mark I ran my first marathon on Sunday. Hadn't done any running since about 2007, did a few Parkruns last year and found I was quite enjoying it so decided to pick this as a long term goal. Was actually hoping to do 50k but my knee started barking at me around 40k and the course had the option to stop at a marathon instead of adding a final 8k loop. It was tough given how cold it was, some parts were iced over and the mud in places was ridiculous but I made it in a little over 5 hours. Shows what someone can do with some drive and motivation. Might do another distance run in future but it won't be in December during a cold snap!

    Brilliant video. I have runners in my group that have come first in their age group, and they put themselves down because "they are the only ones running in their age group". But that is a tale in itself. My runners are fit enough to run in their 60's and beyond but so many people are not, and they have to see that as a positive. They are fit enough to do it. That's a win, by itself. Never put your success down because you are the only one doing it.

    I've had a professor at uni who was refusing to retire tell me he was running marathons under 4 hrs... I think he was just under 70
    But old ppl being fast runners wasn't really a surprise, it's always the 65+ ppl who've been running since they were 14 passing you on your forest runs lol. It's something in that habit of theirs of always sticking to their running routines year after year that keep or even increase their speed :)

  • @CharlieKnolesPlus
    @CharlieKnolesPlus 6 месяцев назад +3

    Honestly incredibly inspirational. I sometimes feel like I’m late to the game starting running last year at 45. To think that it’s possible to run that fast at that age blows my mind, in a good way! Even if I never get to that speed at that age I can easily see how I could maintain my current pace for many years in the future. Great video again Mark.

  • @thegearboxman
    @thegearboxman 6 месяцев назад +39

    You need to remember that genetic advantage carries you until they're screwing the lid down. The fastest masters and vets were also usually the fastest youth athletes (if they were competing as youngsters). I only started running again about 6 years ago, I'm now nearly 58, and a couple of weeks ago I ran a 44:11 10K, finishing 12th out of 76 in my age group. I though that was pretty respectable until I looked at the winning time for my age - 35:53. For a 55+ year old bloke that is absolutely astonishing. To add insult to injury, there were 3 women in my age group who also beat my time. Like you say, comparing to others usually ends in tears, best just compare to your own PB, and on that score I'm happy because even at my age I'm actually getting faster.

    • @alanocallaghan5472
      @alanocallaghan5472 6 месяцев назад +4

      To be fair, part of it is also that these people have been training and getting better technique for about 50 years straight, not just genetic advantage

    • @thegearboxman
      @thegearboxman 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@alanocallaghan5472 Absolutely. It's a combination of both. However, without the 'right' genes you can train all you like, but it won't get you to the top, or even close to it. Those born with the 'elite' genes would still beat the vast majority of sub-elite athletes, even with very little training. The inherent athletic differences between individuals is massive, and the elites are on a different level to the rest of us. You see that even at junior school age, like the 9 year old who beat Mark a few weeks ago. Unfortunately some people have all the 'wrong' genes for athletic performance and these people will barely improve no matter how much training they undertake. A good few years ago there was a theory called the "deliberate practice model" that suggested that anyone who underwent 10 years of appropriate training could achieve elite level. Very quickly that was debunked as utter bollocks, yet some people still subscribe to it.

    Keep up the good work Mark, I enjoy your videos and agree with the message that it's never too late. I gave up running when I left high school and returned to the track in my 50s - after my son kept chipping away at me. I couldn't (and still can't) believe how fast the top people are. There is an "informal" club many of us oldies are trying to join - it's the "run your age club" - running 400m in the same time as your age (e.g. 59 seconds or less for me as a 59 year old). Obviously, the top runners are well ahead of that, but it's a great stretch target. It also helps you cope with the fact you are getting slower as the years go by.

    • @jammybilly
      @jammybilly 5 месяцев назад +1

      Wow! Those are great times, if you have just started running! I'm sure you'll smash those times before April. Just regular running, with recovery days will help, and if you feel the need, or want to change it up a bit, then do some short distance speed work (between lamposts or 100m). Running up hills are great too as are running up stairs. Increasing the distance you run will also strengthen your legs, and when you come to run shorter distances, you may find it easier to run them faster. Walk lots, instead of taxi's or buses and don't take lifts, take the stairs. Don't do all of these things at once though! Introduce these things gradually. And/or join a running club! Good Luck!

    Nice one Mark, keep going, I'm pretty sure you can go sub 60 maybe even close to 55, but it might require specific training over some time. Remember that many of the age group athletes train specifically for these distances. Personally I got into track and field last year (I'm 56, son to be 57), and that first year of training took me from 1 min 27 sec to 62.09 sec for the 400 meter, this season I ran a low 58 sec in training back in May, but sustained an injury, so only finished one official race in 60.36 sec with very little preparation. Back in training though, goal is to run the 400m in the Masters WC age group 55-59 i Sweden in August 24.

    There's this cool doco on utube called "The fastest old man in the World" about a guy who broke nearly every age group record in his age group as he went up the ranks at the time. From sprints to marathons. Well worth a watch. Anyway this reminds me when I was in my mid 30's and I used to enter local mass start cycle races from amateurs to some of the best in the country. Anyway I was your typical B grade climber having a 20min power around 4.5w/kg. Out of 600 or so I'd usually get in the top 50 so wasn't great but better than average. Anyway had a couple of guys in their 60's who regularly would beat me(and many others) in cycle races. Which was a little hard to take as they were around 30yrs older than me, and looked to me like old men. Wasn't until around 67 that they started to slow down. I just found them really inspiring.

Got my only first place in a run, and even a 50 euro gift card, while being a rather average runner in his late 40s Competition turned out to be young football players, probably no older than 15, and who did running as an extra to their normal training :-) Sometimes we get lucky 🙂At the time I could go around 4.30/km on the flat, which was enough 🙂

    Great video as always, my problem is that i am still significantly overweight and running a parkrun in 35 minutes at 53. I took up running at 51 and i do NOT look like a runner, all the guys i am racing at parkrun look like they have been running for 30 years because in the main, they have! So if i can even get to average in my age group that would be significant achievement.

      I started running (parkrun) at 57. Took me just under 40 mins. I'm now 63 and last weekend did 5k in 24.51. You can do it! Lots of slow easy running at conversational pace really works. (and i mean slow) Keep going. Consistency is key.

    That 90yr one is just under 4:50/km (if I've done my maths right). That's roughly my 5k PB pace and as such isn't that much slower than the pace I use when running 400m intervals. They aren't all out effort obviously but they aint slow! And I'm 38 so less than half the age of the person that set it.

    Have you ever done a video on 'bad' training days? I set out for a long easy run yesterday morning, 13mi in my program, got 2 miles in, body was just not having it, hips and calves were agony, didn't want to push through and get injured, had to give it up as a bad job after 7 miles (made myself go at least half way). Hard not to get disheartened and give up altogether. I know just getting off the sofa on a bitterly cold icy day is doing better than the majority of the public, but I'm my own worst critic. I'll keep going, but just wondered if you've experienced the same where your body just says "not today sorry"?

    You could add physical toughness to the list of things about senior citizens not to underestimate. No long ago close to where I live two teenage punks decided to have some fun harassing a "helpless" old guy. You guessed it... he wasn't helpless and it wasn't pretty!

    It looks like you’d have set a PB, if you’d given yourself more of a rest! I’m right behind the message of this video, and lots of the comments. Training and exercise as you get older are fun, and so good for you, even if it takes a wee bit longer to recover. Try to find a supportive club and fellow athletes - of any age. I’m 66 and set three 400m PBs this season - now down to 65 seconds. Thats the first time I’ve run, in seconds, less than my age in years!
