It really was a milestone in my understanding of what "metal" can contain without getting overloaded with nonsense. It is heavy as fuck, melodic, brutal, calm, frenzied, virtuosic, simple, et cetera, but there's a thread running through the whole thing that ties it together perfectly. Plus, the riff at 5:53 in the title track is damn well the best riff that ever was!
It's so refreshing to see Jeff visit these old Nevermore songs! Loved Nevermore and love Jeff's playing but we have been starved of some awesome content. Glad to see some of these being played.
Was just thinking the same thing, lol. I remember being like, "wtf is he doing there?" when this album came out. Jeff is one of those players who always has more in the bag, man. No matter how long I've been a fan (since the late 90s), I inevitably hear something from Jeff that blows me away, even for how ridiculously good of a player I know he is. Really impressive!
Not just how to play it but the thought process behind HOW you came up with it is just as important, if not more important than learning the actual riff itself and is something rarely talked in most artist lessons. Born was my favorite track off the LP, but Dreaming Neon Black is one of my all time favorite albums. Also a huge fan of Andy and Sabbat. 🍻
That's an often overlooked detail with these videos. This is very important for everyone, especially beginners whom may of not learned much guitar yet... I know when I started. I fundamentally didn't understand this stuff and most guitarists who 'break down' their songs never go more depth beyond just playing it.
The riffing you did ESPECIALLY on TGE is IMO some of the best metal riffing ever written. I love every second of it. Thank you for sharing your thought behind the riffs, and how we can attempt to learn them.
A true master of his craft. He has the technical ability to play fast and precise, but also the humbleness to listen to others and try to change things up. A true great.
Imagine the depth Arch Enemy would gain if they let Jeff loose on new material. Its like having an F1 car and just using it to drive to the end of the drive to check the mail.
When I go to the show of Nevermore in Japan and saw your solo of this song, I was impressed and almost crying. This solo is very dramatic and perfect in melody and technique!! I love it!! I’m one of fun in Japan!!
Wow what a great song and Jeff is one of the best guitarist and songwriters ever! Really hope he starts his own band one day! I know it probably gets old but a hired gun in Arch Enemy just doesn’t cut it for someone of his talent! He is honestly no exaggeration more talented than that entire band put together! I really miss his unique songwriting genius and I really don’t want to hear anymore instrumentals either Lol! I think he’d be surprised of the following he would get if he started his own band! Not only metal fans but you’ve got to realize every single guitar player who likes metal would buy his stuff blindly! I truly don’t believe Jeff realizes the impact his playing has had on people? Almost every metal guitar player I know mentions Jeff Loomis as either their favorite or top five guitarists!
I remember around 2008 my friend grinding this song a ton and then we went to Tuska festival to see Nevermore. What a great time that was. The song is also kickass.
Bought this signature 7 for my 24th birthday this year. Absolutely monstrous guitar. Performed the River Dragon Has Come, and a few other songs, as an opening act for my dad and it was a great time.
Never heard this song before so when i heard him say " a little bit more sped up" got too use to it sounding like the actual speed lol then when he let loose on actual tempo , didn't think it could get that faster , but it did lol that is some insane picking skills
Greatest metal guitarist making the greatest metal albums showing one of the greatest riffs of one of the greatest songs..🤘👏👏👏👏 Thank you for visiting your extensive catalog of greatness lately..
"What tomorrow knows" live version have an awesome chorus riff as well! Thank you for the tips, when i studies some music i like to figure out how the composer done the part, how he thinked and this was very helpfull ( nice to have great musician friends to give you some ideias. RIP Warrel)
Great to see this lesson, Jeff! Would you teach us "Next in line" in the future? First Nevermore song I ever heard, that string skipping riff blew me away
The first time I heard of you was when you did an instructional piece for " The river dragon has come" for Guitar world magazine (Remember those, lol). But as a beginner guitar player it was very much out of my wheelhouse, fast forward a few years and I'm knee deep learning Death and Cynic tunes when I pick up a new release from a band I'd never heard of "This Godless endeavour" from a music shop that's closed down since. This song, opening that album, I was like "Holy shit". It's just fantastic playing and production from everyone involved. Thanks Mr Loomis.
I find it refreshing that he's just showing everybody how to play it in standard tuning. On the recording it's a half step down (if you're wondering why it sounds terrible to play along with the record) [G#, E, C#, D#] if you wanna play along.
C'mon dude. The pinnacle of metal would obviously be something by Sabbath, Metallica, Maiden, or Priest. Even Megadeth or Pantera would be a massive stretch.
@@kqh123 Well you are right. These bands is the essence of metal. I really think that This Godless Endeavor is massive though and the point where the technical aspect of this music is at the highest point and in harmony with the sentiment. Apart from that when I say heavy metal my mind immediately goes to Maiden 🔥
Please let it coming ! Exactly those lessons are ones that bring me further on ! Keep it up @Jeff Loomis ! Maybe you should consider playing in a band but bedroom.
I miss Nevermore SO MUCH. RIP Warrel.
I like that Jeff explains what palm muting is, as if this is a beginner level riff.
This Godless Endeavour is one of the best metal albums of all time, love these videos Jeff!
Totally agree, and I said it many times.

ohhhhh yes!!!
Best album of that decade in my opinion.
Nevermore is one of the most underrated acts of all time. Thank you for all the phenomenal music you gave us.
I miss the Nevermore years. Loved all those albums. Best is dead heart in a dead world!!!!!
It's so refreshing to see Jeff visit these old Nevermore songs! Loved Nevermore and love Jeff's playing but we have been starved of some awesome content. Glad to see some of these being played.
It's still funny that this chorus riff is insanely harder than most metal solos. Thank you Jeff.

Killer Riff’s Jeff , as usual!!
I miss NEVERMORE!!!
Rip Warrel🙏🏼
Very melodic riff.
Sounds like Devin Townsend when slow.
Love the solo on this tune. So brutal and passionate.
Great for a gym workout.
I was in my last year of high school when this came out and it melted my face off. The songs, production and playing has held up so well!
Absolutely love this riff, its so busy and futuristic, it almost sounds like a synthesizer section in some way...
This was my first Nevermore song I ever heard ever. I'm so glad Jeff is doing this 15 years later since then.
Same! I remember there was a video for it on some channel at the time.
This was the first Nevermore song I ever heard, and it hooked me for a long time!
That's how Born was born! Love it!

Dreaming Neon Black is an incredibly underrated album. A totally unique record.

Hi Jeff, I saw you with Nevermore live in Athens Greece back in 2001 and 2003. Long live Nevermore 🤟🏻
Warrel Dane and Jeff Loomis! Will always treasure Nevermore! 🤘

One of the sickest metal riffs of all time.
You are the greatest metal guitarist in existence!
God bless JEFF forever!

The riff that made my 13 year old self realise Jeff was the absolute king of the fretboard
What a tone!!
Learned this back in 2008 and I still play it all the time. TGE is a timeless album.
Man, I miss Nevermore....😢
This riff is so creative the whole song is badass. Born is the song that introduced me to nevermore and is one of my all time favorite metal song

Thank God for convincing Jeff to add the most epic bridge of all time to the chorus.
Thanks Jeff , love this Riff. 🎸😎👍keep on Rocking 🎸😎👍

First Nevermore song I heard, and I couldn't wrap my head around it for a few listens. But the solo hit and I immediately became a super fan.
