Black Butler / Kuroshitsuji was adapted from the manga series by the same name. However, only a few episodes from season 1 was canon (and none of season 2 was canon). Black Butler: Book of Circus (aka season 3) was a reboot of the series, following the plot of the source material, including the subsequent OVA Book of Murder and Book of Atlantics.
