I can actually give you a theory of mine as answer; naturally, if you have been bullied or have problems interacting with others and feel depressed or powerless, then watching anime can a) help you overcome solitude by valueing the few friendships you do have or b) increase self-esteem by believing in your own self. This is of course only a theory, but a lot of animes do have protagonists that are in the same secluded spot as people who are bullied. There are also a lot of mangas aimed at different target audiences, but especially shonen mangas (shonen being the Japanese term for pubescent boy) aim at these type of children. I do hope I was able to help a little bit.
My 'dad' did the same and trust me, it's their loss. Better off without them, and when they're old and dying they will regret what they did and we'll be living our happy lives :)
