You sadly cannot get more reserves. If you have your entire ammo capacity into the clip, you won't be able to pick anything to go in reserves. So the only things that help are ammo reserve mods for the weapon type so you can overflow it as much as possible.

So 6 hours to do that one triumph on all characters (assuming they aren’t much much longer then 2 hours (they are)) 6 hours of the same activity over and over again is very tedious at best.

There is a cap, if you use perks to reload the gun early, it still won't stack higher than the default number, so overflowing won't do anything except giving you more chances to cap the buff for the last bullet. That being said, the only gun with that origin trait in the energy slot right now is a shotgun, so it's gonna be far more tedious to achieve.
