  • In this episode of classic game show You Bet Your Life, we meet married couple Otho "Boo Boo" & Lynn Joy Pettijohn who communicate with each other using sound.
Our second couple is Shirley Hurd and Douglas Boyd Calderwood.
You Bet Your Life was taken from Groucho's radio series of the same name. It was inspired after Groucho had done an improvisational scene with Bob Hope on radio. The idea was the same as it later was with Bill Cosby: to invite people on and have an unrehearsed conversation with them. Groucho could always be counted on to enliven the banter with his unique blend of comedy and wit. After talking with Groucho for several minutes, the contestants chose quiz questions from a category they had preselected and, if they answered them correctly, won money.

Shirley is a very strong, attractive, assertive woman, well able for Groucho, but Groucho won in the end. Very amusing.

Methinks she was possibly auditioning to do some sort of stand-up. That whole schtick about beating up on married life could have been her angle. Based on research, it looks like she was 34 there. It appears she died in 1993.

What became of this married couple? Anybody know?

Dunno. Maybe a sign of the times, but it seemed like Lynn Joy was overly reliant on her husband for the answers; it appeared she knew more about the topic than he did. Seeing them labor over the question to which Minnesota was the answer was near torturous to watch.
