This video was exactly what I need. Trying to rebuild a 70 year old barn door that was built using clenched nails. Thanks for sharing a source for nails that work for this technique! I love the level of detail that you covered.
I have a next door neighbor was rebuilding the insulated box with lid that covered the where water came into his cabin. He wa sticking my brain about how to attach the battens to the lid. I described clenched nails for similar reasons. He went over to the original that had rotted and sure enough it had clenched nails. Some carpenter made it in the 1950s and knew what he was doing.
I like to place a steel plate under the nail head. There is always a tendency to inadvertently drive the nail shaft back out of the boards during the clenching step.
I’ve done it with white oak. It will work fine as long as you drill the right size pilot holes. The clenching won’t split anything as long as the nails aren’t too close to the edge. Just experiment with some scrap before nailing the real thing.

Great video, I can see hundreds of situations where that will be useful. I’m beginning to think I don’t use nails enough.
Thank you

Great demonstration Bob. Thanks for sharing.
Perfect tutorial. thanks!
That's a method I want to try some day. Thanks Bob.

That’s exactly how I was taught at college in 1980 to construct a ledges and braced gate.
i clench nails to attach a role/cord, or to attach a mesh net
Thanks
Where did you get the egg meter drill?
What length with a nails and what style?
Would this work in white oak or would it split when clenching the nails back into the timber
