  • How is new tech helping protect the rainforest? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice learn about how space technology is helping uncover illegal gold mines and protecting the Amazon, with illegal mining expert Larissa Rodrigues and Earth researcher Jennifer Holm.
Thanks to SkyFi for sponsoring today's episode. Bringing nearly instant access to high-quality satellite and aerial imagery along with expert-created analytics, get a bird’s eye view of anywhere on the planet with SkyFi’s easy-to-use web browser or mobile app and create a free account today at startalk.skyfi.com/
We explore how using space technology and satellite images can help us understand Earth’s surface. Learn how the democratization of satellite imagery is helping crowdsource data. Larissa Rodrigues, a São Paulo researcher in energy and land use, tells us about how satellite images help discover illegal gold mining operations in the Amazon Rainforest. We discuss the impacts of these operations on the surrounding environments and what they look for in satellite images. What are the main challenges in shutting down illegal mines?
Next, we are joined by Jennifer Holm, Earth Research Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, to learn about the Amazon’s contribution to the climate. What is a Carbon Sink? Is the Amazon the lungs of the planet? How do we incentivize countries to keep their rainforests? Learn about deforestation, plans to reforest the Amazon, and how LIDAR gets used to see through the jungle canopy. How can ordinary people help save the Amazon?
Thanks to our Patrons James Aurouze, Andrea Ramirez, Amy Tan, Joede870, Cris, Gina Martin, Glenn Fishkin, Mihael Mirt, Lion King, and Gábriel Németh for supporting us this week.

If you would like people to be able to put funds into saving the Amazon rain forest and giveing loggers and miners new jobs I'd sugest you put Paul Rosolie's Jungle keepers in a card in the corner of the video!
I've ben listening to him a lot when he guests on other podcasts and the man has some interesting stuff to say. He even says he alwayd backs up his words with photo evidence (a lot on Instagram) and research, for example; They measure the ammount of chemicals found in gold minings inside of anaconda snakes to understand where the mining is the worst.

I live in a gold mining town of Kirkland Lake Ontario Canada. Our town used to have several lakes, now we have the slimes, created by the mining process. Old slimes were re-preocessed when gold prices went up and they discovered more gold left behind then was processed originally. At one time our population was pver 20,000 now it's at about 8,000. nobody wants to live here even though they work here. I should mension that the mines were re-opened a few years ago.
    polution is a problem.

Mr. DeGrasse Tyson, Chuck and all the people from Startalk, thank you for this episode. Illegal gold mining is not only a problem in Brazil and Peru, remember that a 7.7% of the Amazon forest is in Bolivia, that is more than 500900m2 that is also already affected by illegal gold mining.
As you talk in this episode the use of mercury in illegal mining is making a tremendous effect in people, mainly indigenous people. Satellite data could be just referential, but data does not lie.
You asked why the government of Brazil does not act against illegal gold mining, and talking from the perspective of Bolivia, illegal gold mining seems to be almost sponsored by the actual pollitical regime. I would not bring political talk here because here we talk about objective true by corroborate data and information to learn, and I dare to say that satellite data from Bolivian forest would bring similar images like the ones from Brazil and Peru and the information about illegal gold mining is causing tremendous effects from mercury contamination in water, food and then people.
If there is possible, I suggest to take satellite information about deforestation by fire. In the last 5 years, large extensions of forest between Brazil and Bolivia has been devastated by fire, fire caused by humans. People in amazon areas has been causing fires under the argument of getting more area to cultivate alternative food… Another episode about the effects of deforestation verified by satellite data could be very revealing.
Again, thank you for this episode.
    I will keep looking up.

@StarTalk I finally solved the standard particle model! I merged the standard particle model and string theory together in a new supersymetric particle theory called “multi-tier supersymmetry model” where supersymmetric particle exist in different numbers of dimensions. (I.e. 5th dimensional supersymmetric particles, 6th dimensional supersymmetric particles, and so on). Under this theory, 11 or more dimensions exist. As well as the multiple tiers of supersymmetric particles. Graviton may actually be a “super-Higgs boson” in 5 dimensions and “dark matter”
is just 5th dimensional matter. “Dark energy” is actually made out of “anti-gravitons”.

She’s a doctor so I’m not questioning her knowledge, but for example, there are areas of the country (mostly rural) where people just burn trash. From what I gather, there’s no adequate waste management system in certain regions so the easiest thing to do is to let it burn baby burn!
The idea of people doing what they want, stripping the land for all it’s worth then walking away like it’s someone else’s problem. They have an expression for this - “sem tempo irmão!”

Active sight vs passive sight. I wonder if wavelengths for purpose are regulated but only in regard to that purpose? At what point do we wonder how wavelengths interact with life in general and are there spectrum enforcement agencies that are consistent globally? I know various agencies or structures monitor wavelengths but how much of the spectrum is monitored in total with a timeframe that is protective to life?

Random unrelated to this video question: our solar system isn’t stationary in space right? We are apparently getting pulled towards a great attractor… If that is the case, then if we wanted to travel to an alien civilization, wouldn’t it be somehow faster for us to find a craft or something that can sit in one place and let that civilization come to us in a sense? Or if there was even a possibility of traveling against the pull of the great attractor would that not be infinitely faster to reach the civilization?

One gotta ask about the government responsability as it plays a considerable role in all this mess going on in the Amazon.

Paying for someone to NOT do some thing is extortion or robbery, "your money or your life" is the classical stickup line for a reason. Tell them to not do it or WE will punish them in a way that will hurt them far more than the gold would pay them. We should not tollerate extortion in any way shape or form.

Estimado senor' Dr neil degrasse tyson and his best companion Chuck, I have a question on? As the venus have no moon, also one of the hottest planet in the solar system, does gaining of having a moon also has something to do with temperature. As the temperature and gravity does kind of determine the possibility of the outcome of what kind of planet it is.
