    Did my first head gasket earlier this year. Also did the valves and timing chain while I was in there. One of biggest moments of accomplishments was firing it up after the job, then driving it to work the next day. The smile on my face never went away. There’s something about working on your own machine that does something to you.
    My advice: sort literally every nut and bolt into ziplock bags. Made the job 1000x easier.

      @cjwrench07 Год назад +17

      If you have the floor space putting the integral bolts/studs/nuts through a marked piece of cardboard, is another great way to prevent mixing them up.
      I had a near impossible to diagnose problem in a newer Tacoma throwing a super odd set of codes. Ones that Toyota said were impossible unless we really, really, screwed something up.
      That was until the customer came clean, in admitting he tried fixing it with a buddy, and they just put all the engine & trans bolts/studs&nuts in a single large pile.

    Huge public service announcement, but keep in mind that some head gaskets are directional (as in "this side up") if you ever wanted to try the repair on your own. Also, I feel like they didn't stress enough that if you have a blown head gasket, there's a chance that the mating surface on the block or head could be warped, causing the new gasket to fail. And last thing, alway do an oil change after a head gasket before you start the engine. There could be coolant that made it's way into the the oil passages

    • @michaelbenardo5695
      @michaelbenardo5695 Год назад +5

      Subies aren't thaaaat bad. It comes down to the driver mostly, make sure it's got oil and if it's boosted just don't floor it at 2k rpm cause it'll destroy the engine. I had to trade in my sti to go back to school and the sales dude who test drove it did exactly that. I tried to explain to him how bad that is and to simply down shift when going uphill. He kept doing it. Any doubts I had about trading it in went out the window, I knew the car was fucked just by that short drive. Sure enough, I heard the guy who bought had the engine die on him literally 2 weeks later. I bought it new and drove it for 120k mostly on stage 2, had no issues. It is mostly the driver. Now I have a brz and love it.

    We have a Lanz Bulldog, and last week we figured out that my great-grandfather just threw away the head gasket away, because he accidentally burnt the head too hot( you need to set the Head on fire to preheat the engine) and let the gasket melt. Now we overhaul the Motor after about 60 years. This thing ran without a head gasket for the last 60 years, but the compression was not the best, that’s why we repair it. But the torque from that 10l one cylinder is still amazing.

    0:33 seconds into the video. On Sunday of this very week. I just replaced a Valve cover gasket on my 4.2l inline6 GMC Envoy. I had to take the intake, air filter box, air intake "4200 Vortec" plenum, and intake manifold off. As well as the alternator, to have room for the intake forward upward sweep to remove the intake manifold. All just to get to the valve cover bolts. A few steps further and I could have removed the head and just done the head gasket since I was that far in there. But a blown head gasket wasn't the issue. Massive amounts of oil in the spark plug tubes (coil over plug system) meant a leaking valve cover gasket. It was the spark plug tube gaskets, but it still counts as a valve cover leak since those are apart of the valve cover gasket kit. FELT SUPER ACCOMPLISHED AFTER DOING THIS JOB! 👋💪💪💪😁

I suggested to him (before all this happened) that he should replace the head studs because they stretch, and he was like "nah, it'll be fine" well it was not fine. replace the head studs whenever you have to take the head off.

    Also paramount: make sure the block and head don't need decking. You can replace a blown head gasket all day but if the block or head have eroded or blown out material the gasket won't seal.

    I replaced the head gasket in my 94 civic with a b18 swap twice. 1st time took about 3 hours. 2nd time took abput 90mins. Had to do it twice cause I didn't get the head worked over the 1st time and it blew it again. 2nd time I got the head worked over and never had another problem with it.

Heck even my bone stock Toyotas have been projects. All cars need maintenance and love. Good job gentleman excited for this weeks episode. (:

    Last year I blew the head gasket in my Sentra spec v. Taking it apart wasn’t terrible but I was definitely fearful of putting stuff back together. Making sure everything lines up like the timing belt and camshafts gave me a lot of anxiety. It was a $3500 job and I got it done for $200 (did have to buy some tools). If it didn’t work I was probably junking it anyway but it’s still running strong thankfully. This was my first big job on a car. I had a similar issue with rough idling but was smooth over 1200 rpm, and at idle it would drop dangerously low sometimes

    You need to pull fuel pump fuse. Cycle the engine a bit to get oil system filled. Then put fuses back in. Once back, cycle key a couple times to on position. Listen to fuel pump cycle. Now your fuel system is primed. You can now safely start the car.

    Damn this makes me miss my MR2. It was so amazing having a little, light car that was pretty easy to work on because the parts were small enough to fit in your hands. Plus T tops or Targa tops are the best roof arrangement ever. When you go down hill on back roads during the evening time, you can feel the temperature change as you dip into cool, misty fog.

    Just for you to know, usually, like 99% of the time, when a headgasket blows: it doesnt mean that the gasket itself it's broken or something. Insted what happens is that the cylinder head surface where the gasket sits, it's bend due to a high heating and cooling so fast. Sometimes even the cylinder block surface where the gasket sits, also bends. That's what trully leaks. Sometimes, the 20% of the times, just by putting a new gasket, may get the form of that bend and prevent it from leaking. The other 80% of the time yo will need to resurface the cylinder head. Sometimes you also have to resurface the cylinder block. Otherwise you will never rapare that at all.

    • @orlando8834

      Seriously this video is garbage, well over half of the time when you have a blown head gasket, you need a hell of a lot more work done than a new head gasket.

    • @nimmen
      @nimmen 4 года назад

      In the case of my MR2 it was just an old gasket starting to deteriorate. (Mine wasn't really blown though, just had exhaust gas leaking into the cooling system, causing overheating.) I measured the head and block for warpage and it was all within spec. Slapped a new gasket on, (did port/polishing, valve job and replaced all seals while the head was off) and good as new!

      I was scrolling for a comment like this. They just breeze by the fact that he took the head to a machine shop, didn't even say that it was the head they took there or what they are fixing - warping (but clearly did because its so clean). Really takes the value of this video down to 0.
