It's from the time when Poland was Partitioned between Russia, Prussia(Germans) and Austria. This particular song was written in the Prussian partition, so that's what it's referring to, but the sentiments in the Russian one were similar. Actually, the biggest uprisings were against the Russian rule. Religious connotations aren't surprising, considering it was written over a century ago. Christianity is quite deeply rooted in Polish history and culture- precisely because it was often the only way to keep our national identity while the occupiers were trying to eradicate it. But it's hard to say that Poland nowadays is "very religious". It might sometimes appear like that if someone doesn't know the context and only focuses on one part of the society- mostly older people, conservative politicians etc. But the majority of younger people (let's say, younger than 40) aren't religious and Poland is actually the fastest laicisizing country in Europe.
I understand that it is difficult for you to assess the depth of these words. At the time of writing this song, Poland was under German rule, speaking Polish was forbidden at that time. Remember, every Pole listening to this song stands up, takes off his hat and does not chew gum.

Thank you for your attention. I also recommend listening to our National Anthem and watching The Unconquered about Polish history. Regards!

Poland is more Catholic than Italy. Does that answer enough about Christianity in Poland? 😉
