Totality in Texas…Weather Almost Ruined It

- I drove over 1500 miles from Montana to Texas to view the total solar eclipse. This was an event that I had my doubts about capturing based on the decision of going to Texas to view it and the weather during the event. But it was an amazing journey and even though we didn't have perfectly clear skies for the eclipse...it was still amazing to see.

I dig it. I’m from Montana and live in east Texas. I drove to Mount pleasant, tx and was crossing my fingers until about 20 minutes prior to totality. It was incredible. Nice videos!

I love all your videos. 2017 August I drove from Fort Worth, Tx to watch the Total Eclipse. The guy in my area filmed it with an expensive Nikon. His camera with all the eclipse pictures were stolen.
I believe it was the two girls in the jeep that grabbed it of his front fender as they left. This eclipse I watched the total eclipse from a chair in my backyard. At thin crescent a huge cloud bank blocked the sun. The sun went total second after the bank cleared. No clouds the whole two minutes of the eclipse. Next one is in twenty years, for the USA, in Colorado. I will be in my mid 80s.

Your Eclipse footage is the best I've seen so far.
I planned to go to Arkansas and had several different campsites picked out and was watching the weather forecasts obsessively until noon on Sunday... every site was forecast with around 30% cover. Ended up going to my first choice I'd picked out months ago in the Ouachita National Forest. It turned out to be a perfect spot
As a side note, my radiation monitors kept alarming along particular stretches of Highway 270... On the way to the campsite, I noticed it happened along specific stretches of pavement. The road itself was apparently made with gravel that was slightly more radioactive.

@@cfneal1459 I have both a Radiacode 102 and a Raysid. I had the alarm thresholds for the count rate set fairly low. Count rates were about 3x background and dose rate was about 2x background
Nice camera work! So much detail. My son loved the whole event and B&H got the glasses to us quickly. Just an amazing natural phenomenon every time I see it.
It is pretty amazing. I might try and do the one in Australia in 2028. The one in Spain sounds like it could be very different since its taking place with the sun low in the horizon.

I am glad you had good luck with the clouds. I watched from my backyard. We had broken low clouds. I was able to get some photos of the totality through the cloud breaks. In 2017 we drove to Kearney NE.
The weather was pretty good considering how crazy it was the day before and right after.

Went to upstate New York and had the same kind of view with filtered sunshine so we couldn't see the planets or the comet, but it was still amazing. Great video!
I saw some pictures of the comet. Wasn’t even thinking about looking for it during the eclipse.

I drove from San Diego out to Texas and then chased the best opportunity for clear skies all the way into Arkansas, finally settling for a spot west of Conway. We had only the slightest of high haze there and it was a great 2nd total eclipse for me, as it was for you. Thanks again Drew!

On the day of the solar eclipse, I actuly was leaving a local antique store near where I live trying to find radioactive stuff, and I was very dark when I walked outside. I found some decent uranium glass at the store! :)

Well done Drew! Even through the partial cloud cover you captured good images, with excellent focus and clarity showing both the solar flares and the corona shining through. I travelled to Wyoming from New Mexico for the last one (perfect conditions!), but wasn't able to make a trip this time. A nice composition all the way through--glad I watched.

Los Alamos was a great visit some 30 years ago, I was hoping to get some nuclear test videos but they were still classified at the time, now YT has loads of them. It was exciting for us little boys back in the 1950s seeing the tests and early rocket launch/failures on the newsreels we would watch at school. It's a shame those now 'in charge' have such low regard for preserving history... Nice to see you stopped at the little church in Taiban NM... Saw the last eclipse from a hill top in Nebraska in the dead center of the shadow, spectacular 360 degree orange sunset some 30+ miles out in every direction, was even able to see the shadow approaching for a couple seconds. Really glad you feel that way. When I was editing the video I would start to feel that awe I felt that day watching the eclipse.
I was lucky to see it as well. It lasted just over a minute and a half. Not all of Montreal was in the path of full shadow though: the Eastern part and districts near Laval didn't have that chance.
The exterior of the church at 11:04 reminds of Slash's guitar solo in "November Rain" music video, although the entrance is off-center and longer.

You actually captured developing solar flares - neat!
At first, when they were only dots, I thought these could be stars, but then they grew and began to bend along the magnetic field lines. A spectacular detail, much more so than the black disc in the sky itself! 😎
That large solar flare was pretty amazing to see. It actually looked very big when looking at it.
Wow finally found a clip showing it how I saw it with the thin clouds moving past the sun making it look like it's on fire! Nice video.
Another excellent video! Thanks for the Los Alamos tour, was that one of the uranium cubes from Germany? Did you go to downtown Sulphur Springs by the courthouse? They have an interesting public bathroom there with a 1 way mirrored exterior in the court yard, and the court house granite is radioactive enough that it easily showed up on my radiacode. I live about an hour east in Rockwall, luckily we got a good break here with cloud cover for totality. Can't wait to see your next video. Thank you again for all the time, effort, trouble, and hard work that you put into all your videos that make them some of the information out there without some agenda behind it.
I really appreciate that...I try to have zero agenda with my videos...other than trying to teach people about radiation. That museum in Los Alamos said the uranium cube was one of the German ones. But I've seen pictures of that reactor that was built and the one the Nuclear Science and History Museum has and this one doesn't look the same. Its missing some cuts and uranium metal that old is going to show signs of oxidation and be a little more crude. Maybe I missed the sign saying that it was a reproduction uranium cube?
Epic and awesome eclipse capture! I feel like the sparse clouds helped give it an interesting dimension and showed the shape of the light rays

My Toyota Tacoma has been great for what I do.
I think the clouds created an interesting effect of constantly varying the exposure of the prominences so you could see how pink and structured they were. They got pretty washed out in most pictures but they were the most brilliant pink color I've ever seen, and far more obvious than the 2017 eclipse when solar activity was lower. Surprisingly, the corona looked less interesting than in 2017.
that was really nice. great 4K video. the drown has great 4K on it. some great video of solar eclipse. nice solar flair. we are around solar max at time of eclipse. that what makes the southern and northern lights. also makes radio waves bounce around more or less . love the Los Alamos video as well.

Excellent video! We had nearly the sam type of weather in SE Oklahoma.
Dispersed camping is always better then campgrounds,no generators, barking dogs and Campground karens.
This is very true. Generators are very annoying when out camping. I run very little power with my rig, mainly for my Dometic cooler and charging camera and drone batteries. So I have a battery with a solar panel I pop out when I'm at a place for a while. Usually driving to locations keeps the battery pretty topped off.

I'm really liking FPV. I feel more comfortable now flying the FPV drone around than I do the Air 2S. Integrating the FPV content into my videos isn't that hard. I've been using the drone to scout locations that are a little hard to find...like old uranium mines.

Great content and amazing photography as usual. I viewed the eclipse from northern Maine and had my Radiacode 102 logging data during the event. If anything background radiation levels actually seemed to go up slightly during the event, although I was walking around and carrying my device so the readings would have been questionable. Very interested to learn what you observed.
I got lucky, the Ohio weather actually cleared up to be able to see it. A few hours before it was complete cloud cover. It was my first total eclipse.
I was wanting to bring my shortwave radio out to see the effect of the eclipse on MW and shortwave broadcasts, but i didn't, i kept my full attention to the eclipse.

We also went down to Texas from Utah, and likewise managed to find a relatively cloud-free spot west of Austin. So worth it!
Incidentally, we swung through White Sands on the way down, and experienced that wind. Wasn't ideal, haha 😂.

I don’t see a decrease in background radiation. But Texas as a state had some of the lowest background radiation levels I’ve seen…overall.

Random question, did the background radiation drop a lil when the sun was effectively blocked for those few minutes? Should of watched teh video before asking the question lol.
I went back over the data that was recorded during the eclipse and I saw no dip in background radiation. Kind of the reason why I didn’t address it any further in the video.

Hello Drew! I've had two Cat scans of the head which have ionizing radiation. Now I am worried about getting brain cancer. Do you have any information on this matter?
The chances of you getting brain cancer from two scans is extremely unlikely.
Thank you for helping with my extreme anxiety. I worry about all of the nuclear medicine tests doctors order for us.
One show I watch had people saying Cat Scan of the head was very bad and causes the death of brain cells, and particles continually bouncing against each other in your head giving one a tumor.

May I ask have you had any health issues being around radiation?
Zero issues...I was checked out by a doctor last year just because I wanted to know if there was anything I needed to watch out for. All my labs came back normal. I also had my first surgery to repair a hernia with zero problems there. I feel great and I try to exercise everyday taking my dog for walks or riding my bike around. I told my doctor what I do and that I go into radioactive areas and handle radioactive material. So my radiation exposure is going to be higher than most people out there. But my exposure is nothing compared to people that get a CAT scan or have some type of nuclear medicine procedure. I've been doing radiation related exploring and collecting for the last 7 years.
So Cat scans have very high radiation?
Can a lay person order a dosimeter for everyday use?
Not really sure why you think its something a "lay person" couldn't order. There are plenty of different types of radiation detectors out there. The trick is finding the one that suits your needs based on your level of involvement in the subject. Radiation can be a very deep rabbit hole to start going down. But I think anyone could easily get the gist of it pretty easily. Its helpful in the beginning to understand what dose rates are similar to things almost everyone experiences. That's why I usually try and talk about how many dental or chest x-rays something is. Of course I make it a little harder in my videos because I'm using CPM (counts per minute) to measure radiation and there isn't a direct conversion to dose rates from those units. CPM is like looking at the RAW data coming into the detector.
My concern is cumulative radiation in my body. It seems like anytime I go to a health care provider they order an xray or cat scan or something with radiation.
@@pswer1600 x-rays and CAT scans can dump a decent amount of energy into your cells. But our bodies can recover from that damage with no ill effects. Radiation exposure doesn't add up over time. If you have massive doses in a short period of time that can cause problems. But the dose levels needed for something like that is much greater than what a CAT scan or x-ray will deliver.

Seeing a total solar eclipse is a very humbling experience.
All the yelling and screaming ruined it.
Not nearly as bad as many other videos, but also what do you expect? A once in a lifetime event for many, and for noone to get emotional/excited?
What are you talking about. That level of excitement is exactly what you feel watching this eclipse happen.
@RadioactiveDrew sorry Drew, I love your content and look forward to your videos, but I have to disagree. I deliberately drove to the middle of nowhere so I could experience the eclipse and hear the birds go silent and things get weird. Only to have both eclipse moments joined by a background of hollering idiots from miles around for 4 minutes, making every dang dog bark. I can understand the cheering at first totality, but for 4 minutes? That kinda ruined it.
Then again....i am weird and would rather enjoy watching the eclipse and photographing it than running around and yelling my lungs out for 4 minutes.
@n5sdm I get where you are coming from. For the video I think it works. The last eclipse I saw in 2017 I was in the middle of a field with one other person with me. It was nice seeing it like that. But being with other people this time around was also a good experience.
