  • Here's my 2020 dirt jump MTB which I've ridden all year so far. The Marin Alcatraz hardtail is the dream. This would have been the bike I raced speed and style at Crankworx Rotorua where the slopestyle contest just went down! I love this bike so much, riding it and talking about all the key little features. But it's time for some upgrades!! So help me choose what new parts to add to this custom jump bike ready for some huge tricks coming up soon!

32 (front tooth count)÷13(rear tooth count) × 26" wheel diameter = 64 gear inches. That is a hard heavy fast gear that will actually slow you down in reaching top speed. Most BMX racers, either 20" or 24" cruisers like to be in the area of 55 gear inches. Right now, I ride 60 gear inches and I find it just easy-er enough to get up to top end more quickly, and maintain top end longer without burning my self out. Being with dirt jumping, you're relying on your pump mostly, you might find dropping two teeth in front, putting you dead on 60 gear inches will be beneficial. You get up to top end quicker, with less effort. In case, you case or something.

Fork: definitely team up with Öhlins, Fox is second-best if you can't. Brake: Trickstuff Piccola is super light, get the Trixer hose thing for barspins. Cranks: keep the current ones bc you can't get much lighter, or maybe do the custom colours on Raceface's Next cranks. Bar: if Gusset does a carbon bar, get that to save some weight.

  • @devildoglcpl

You may want to look into Profile for a few different crank options. There are a lot of trail riders that use the Profile Elite crank sets with 22mm Ti spindle and Ti spindle bolts. They are spline drive and I believe come in a 168mm leangth. They use a 104bcd 4 Bolt spline drive spider with color options or a 5 bolt (I forget the bcd on that) also with color options. Options for crank arms colors are black or chrome. The crank arms are hollow cr-mo. Light, stiff and strong with the Ti options

Don't know if you have already looked into this, but if you do want to run a mechanical gyro you try using TRP's HY/RD caliper which is a hydraulic conversation caliper, it is kind of the best of both worlds. Ive run a pair on a CX bike and they were surprisingly, awesome! I may even put one on my Alcatraz...

Magura brakes are really light. I have mt7 and mt5 and they're both a composite carbon lever and master cylinder. It feels like plastic to touch but great power and modulation in the one kit. For a DJ set up, you may want to look at the mt4(?), the cross country calliper.

Formula 6 bolt 160mm disc rotor claims 95g, and absolute black (same specs) claims 82g
Titanium cog if it exists? Just replace steel with titanium, and use aluminium with titanium when safe (excluding Gusset, although custom Gusset composite pedals for the pin placement?). What's the seat post clamp bolt made of? Does the steerer tube need to be that long? Lighter spokes and nipples if possible, safe, and allowed by Halo

you should defiantly put some scooter grips on the side without the break leaver they are very long and very comfy, ethic scooters have the most comfortable grips and a little tip most Australians like me do is put your grips in some hot water for 10-15 minutes then give them a good stretch and the slide them on your bars makes your grips longer and softer

The öhlins would be sick but it will definitely be heavier than what you’re running now and if you run it at max pressure as I’m sure you do with jumps why even bother?
You could try some sram xo1 dh cranks or descendant cranks, they’re pretty light in weight and if you get a smaller chainring but also downsize the sprocket in the rear to maintain the same gearing, possibly a 28 up front with a 9 in the rear it will save weight.
    A carbon seatpost maybe?

I think that custom öhlins would be sick as no other dj rider rides öhlins. For the brakes I think you should go for some brake force one h2o brakes as the lever is very discreet also they use water instead of brake fluid which is very cool.

  • @henrymarsh4382

Maybe consider BMX cranks? Profile cranks come in all lengths (including 160mm), and then you can get appropriate titanium axles. Would look sick in chrome on an alloy frame, and pretty different. Might need a signature Oval ring though!
Forks: 36 chassis is pretty much perfect, as you know, but its the inside of the forks that counts! Maybe look into some smaller companies that could tune how you want? Vorsprung? MRP? Andreani? Push?

Get roxshock pike or lyric front fork
Get a bmx style chain ring that's light as it has less teeth it should he lighter
And I think that you should go for that xtr or maybe a magura because Sam seems to be doing good on them
