Best thing I ever did was learn a LITTLE Japanese. Mostly just grammar structures, honorifics, etc. That helped me enjoy Japanese media a lot more even though I'm far from fluent and not planning to be one. And it also opened my eyes on how localizers absolutely butcher shows and games all the time.
