I purchased Hello floss thinking it was eco-friendly, but it was greenwashing. It was 50% plant and 50% plastic. Less plastic is great but you can’t do anything with it but toss it in the trash. Also, I purchased a fountain pen to reduce waste, but I hated using it. Lastly, I think it’s safe to say you’re not a bar person in general 😂
Oh I forgot to add that I am not a period pads or menstrual cup person. It’s period pants for me all the way! I used to use tampons and thought I could never go back to free flowing, but now I can’t imagine life any other way! The panties are like your period’s best friend - so comfy when you need them most.
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist Yes, you did mention the period pads. That’s what made me think to share my thoughts 😂 Also, if you don’t think you’ll like a fountain pen, don’t try it. Haha! There are still a lot of great refillable options. I just wanted to try something fancy thinking & hoping I would like it. I personally just write too quickly and hop all over the page so it didn’t work for me.
Coming from a Muslim, (our faith requires us to wash down there after the bathroom) we use a plant watering can without the sprinkle nozzle attached, or a simple plastic bottle. Stores also sell “pet hoses” meant to wash your dog in the bathroom at home but you can use it like a bidet. There are also spray bidets on Amazon. Both the pet and “spray bidet” titled ones look like a miniature hose. They’re under $30 typically. You may even find a toilet seat with a bidet attachment and buttons at a Middle-Eastern grocery store. They sell for $20-$30 too. The hose ones may or may not attach to warm water and like the others, need time for the warm eater to come up. I can not reccommend a hose spray enough because you can be precise since it’s a hose, and get the front too. This is helpful if you get periods cuz sometimes pads smear the blood everywhere. I think the green company’s ideas are great but it is cheaper through nontraditional routes.
I dislike a lot of the same things: conditioner bars, toothpaste tabs, bamboo utensils. One I would personally add is beeswax wraps for the kitchen. Everyone was talking about them a few years ago, so I made some. The wax doesn't really seal like it claims it will, plus you can't see what's inside. Honestly, I would rather put things in a glass or even reusable plastic container.
Beeswax wrap has never worked for me either! It was so trendy at one point and I bought some and received some as a gift, but you’re right, it doesn’t seal the way it’s “supposed” to and I find it so finicky that it’s not worth using. The only things that I’d wrap with it are things that don’t really need to be wrapped anyway. I’d rather use a bowl cover, a towel, a silicone bag, or a container.
There is a lot of talk about beeswax wraps... I never got into them, but then I was never a huge user of cling film either (I tend to wash and reuse it if I get it with a purchase of something like cakes at a stall, I have a used stash in the cupboard and 1/2 new roll in the cupboard - it's a good non adherent would dressing if I ever burn myself badly or something so keeping it rather than using it all up). What I have loved is making my own cheese wraps using the paraffin wax from wheels of cheese... it's not good for you at high temperatures (why we use soy rather than paraffin wax candles) but you only need to melt it once and the wraps are perfect for storing cheese in the refrigerator - better than plastic as the cheese can breathe.
I know this would be hard for a non disabled person, but have you considered making a video about ableism in zero waste? I use some reusable swaps but have to use a lot of food in convenience packaging as cooking is harder for me. I have a neurological condition (no diagnosis yet but possibly MS) so some things are impossible for me.
I have one already!! i mostly focused on why prepackaged items and things like straws being banned are sooo abelist! I will have to make another. ANy other topics I should cover?
Also with the disabled viewpoint- although Amazon isn't the most ethical company it does allow you to have virtually anything delivered to your door for free with Amazon prime, for a good value. I buy some products that are more environmentally friendly than those I could get from more expensive and/or less accessible places.
I love floss pickers too! I've seen biodegradable ones but I've yet to try them. In the meantime I just use my floss picks multiple times until the string is too weak then I toss it 😂
Love this! I also like the pick flossers, too. My dentist says you can reuse them. I have not swapped them, instead, I now just keep rinsing and reusing. One flosser can last over a month! As you say, the most sustainable product is the one that you already have!
I actually like bar soaps. If you find a soap that you would want in a liquid form you can either grate it and put it in water to form a gel, or you can put the bar in a coffee cup that has some water in the bottom and pour the water soap on your hands when you wash your hands. Toothpaste tabs I crush them in a pill crusher and add a few drops of water and make a paste that way.
Wow! That little reusable floss pick thing will save on a lot of floss too! IDK about everyone else, but I use a long string of floss that I wrap around my fingers for grip, so a lot of the floss I’m using, doesn’t actually get used between my teeth. I actually like that little swap!
I also wrap my floss around my fingers, but actually use almost every inch on it on my teeth. For the best hygiene result, you're supposed to use a new piece of floss for every pair of teeth, so a single floss pick is not an alternative to me. I just rotate the floss down my fingers after every pair of teeth and would say like two inches per batch end up unused. I also think changing out the floss in the floss pick between every use would not work with my ADHD. Also, I did try compostable floss and it just broke and frayed and hurt my gums.
Every time I watch your videos I am fascinated by how sincere you are and that is why you're one of the few people I still subscribe to. Keep up your work!
I could not live without my conditioner bar! For anyone struggling with sudsing, my conditioner bars instructions are to glide it over the hair rather than suds it up in your hand. Works great for me as a detangler and keeps my hair smooth! I use the Peach brand and love their shampoo, conditioner, face, and body bar!
I struggled with toothpaste tabs for a long time but finally go the hang of them. I really like the ones I get (Bite) but I totally understand not liking them.
My favourite 'new purchase' swap has been a utensil set... with good quality plastic utensils and a metal straw. I've added some bamboo chopsticks I got with a meal - they are really lightweight and I carry them always :) I was fortunate to have lots of youtubers saying that they regretted buying new things when I started living lower waste last January, so I've been able to avoid the mistake of buying loads of new things... I do regret buying a set of 6 metal straws (why??? that was years before really going lower waste... but the little brush is handy). The close second for favourite new purchases was a set of reusable produce bags I bought on Etsy - they've had a lot of use from purchasing to protecting my blueberry bush from being decimated by birds :) Third is my keep cup. My favourite homemade swap was using some calico to make reusable bags for buying bread an other low waste items... I already had the supplies as I do lots of crafts. I have dental issues so need an ultra soft fine bristled toothbrush (I haven't seen one available in bamboo, my receding gums have taken 3 years to grow back after I used to use just a soft one). Normal fluoride toothpaste for me - my local low waste shop collects dental items for teracycle. I use bar soaps for hand washing (usually scented ones I am gifted) and shaving (need to be natural or I get irritated skin) but most soaps in my house are currently liquid... a lot of that is because I have a backlog to use up before trying anything new. I tend to shower and wash my hair weekly which cuts the use of soaps loads and means it takes forever to use things up!
Thrift Stores are the best and most sustainable. I use baking soda straight to brush my teeth. Comes in a cardboard box. Simple but works. Water piks are great as well.
I bought a shampoo bar a while ago and used most of it but I much prefer 2 in 1 liquid soap. I've had my container of 2 in 1 soap for almost two years and its still not empty- I'd like to have something more eco friendly since it's in plastic packaging- but I'm not gonna throw it away if it isn't empty yet.
Hi….regarding the dish soap, if you hold it in the water and swish it around really quickly, it will make the water sudsy. You can buy a cage that has a handle specifically for this purpose but if you are just using it up I wouldn’t bother.
I like toothpaste tabs, but I regret not ordering right, or not researching - I *want* fluoride in my toothpaste, thought I found tabs with fluoride, but they came with some other compound in it?? Disappointing for me. I also didn't like pads - I got like 3 UTIs from them. Did I use them too long? Not clean them the right way? Either way, thanks to your videos, I took a chance with modi bodi, and so far so good!
I switched to bar shampoo and conditioner and I absolutely love it. I use HiBar from Grove and it suds up so much with barely rubbing it on my head. The conditioner “suds” up the same amount as other conditioners that come in bottles. I also REALLY recommend Blueland’s foaming soap tablets. They come completely plastic free with packaging and shipping and have great scents. Never liked bar hand soap because I feel like bacteria sits on it and won’t actually clean my hands as well as liquid soap. I also highly recommend reusable cotton pads for guys especially. Regular cotton pads would fall apart the second I swipe it across my face because of my stubble regardless of if I just shaved. I think the kind of fabric I got is called Jerry cloth and it’s amazing. No more pieces of cotton all over my face from applying my toner. However I absolutely hated the reusable cotton pads that were fleece-like material and a more satin-like material
Also for floss I switched to Oral B refillable glide pro. It is still all plastic but one container is equivalent to 3 regular containers of floss. So although it’s still all plastic it is cutting down on the plastic packaging by a lot. I think I want to try that reusable toothpick one you showed in the video though. I feel like I’m always using way more floss than I actually need because I need to get a good grip on the string
Those exact toothpaste tabs are also on my regret buying list. I went with unpaste tabs as limited brands where I live and they have fluoride there texture is better I think
Awesome stuff Emma, thanks for the info! 😃👍🏻👊🏻 .... For hand soap I use Blueland, I've yet to try Hello's hand soap, however I do use their fluoride free toothpaste and mouthwash.
Bar soap for hair and body. For some reason it made my hair and skin feel sticky and difficult to brush. I also tried some henna hair dye because I heard it was more environmentally friendly (I am not sure though).... it was a good color, but the henna stained my clothing, skin and towels for weeks on end. My hair is really long, so maybe that was part of the issue. I never tried toothpaste tabs, but I would probably end up crunching them up and swallowing them as well. This happens to me with cough drops, but cough drops are supposed to swallowed.. gradually (not like how I do, crunch crunch swallow), but toothpaste tabs probably not.
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist it was a castile soap. It said could be used in hair and body lol. But maybe that wasn't supposed to be its primary use? I dunno, I might try some other ones (specifically for the hair) in the future.
I'm happy using toothpaste tabs and bar soap. I'm currently trying out a washing up soap bar and I really don't think I'm going to be buying a second one.
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist I grew up with bar soap so it is the norm for me to use it. Liquid soap wan't a thing in the sixties and seventies in the UK.
This may be unpopular, but I regret my reusable water bottle purchase. Something about my brain does not want to drink from a bottle that has a bigger opening than a standard soda bottle. It's a weird sensory thing. I knew I didn't like wide mouth containers, but even the "narrow" Nalgene was too wide for me. Instead of trying to find my holy grail water bottle, I'm just reusing "single use" soda bottles.
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist for an adult it might be fine, but my kids pick at anything that is peeling up in the slightest, and then they will not restick like other bandages. And if they get wet they are shot.
Toothpaste tabs are my absolute least favorite too. It never turns into paste and is just gritty. My teeth do feel clean afterwards and they work, but I will not buy them again.
I love bar soaps. The dish bar does take a bit to get used to, but I do like them. I will break out the liquid if I have a major issue like when I clean the deep fryer or litter box. I am not a fan of period underwear. I've always known I don't like pads, they smell and make me feel gross, so I'm not sure what I expected different from these. They also are really uncomfortable to wear. Leg holes too big so I'm always picking them out of my butt but the waist cuts into me pretty badly. They've also leaked on me while I was at work. Had to go home and change. I wish I could find something I could use instead of tampons, but nothing else works. I use Nellie's laundry soap powder but I don't think it cleans very well. Wish there was something in powder form that worked, was unscented and packaged better but i haven't yet. Still have this big tub to use up but if anyone has any ideas for me there is appreciate it. Dropped dishwasher tabs are the best tabs ever, better than anything conventional I've tried. Definitely think they're affordable too. Highly recommend those.
love the idea of toothpaste tabs, hate the lack of fluoride. also re: bidets - my Luxe Bidet has recently started acting up and I can't figure out how to fix it (the sprayer has become misaligned) and I'm rather upset about it. Pre-Dec 2019 me would not understand.
I also hate bars. I prefer buying big bottles of soap and shower gel (here we don't have shops that fill up our bottles, so big bottles are the second best, unfortunately)
I had the dissolving issue with dropps as well and it was because I wasn't putting them in the absolute bottom of the washing machine. I wash with tap cold water and now they dissolve every time both the detergent and fabric softener. Maybe that could help?
I hate toothpaste tabs too! I have a whole jar of them that I have no idea what to do with cuz they sure dont clean my teeth. I bought some "eco friendly" sponges at the store, and I knew it was greenwashing but I got them to avoid the alternative. I haven't even used them anyway cuz I found that I like my wooden dishbrush better than sponges anyway. I previously bought compostable garbage bags before I learned that things dont break down in landfills, so they were kind of pointless to buy. I used them up but I dont wanna buy them again. I got some really cheap silicone ziploc bags from Aldi and they dont work good at all, snacks stored in them kept getting stale because they dont seal good enough. Not sure what I can do with them now, maybe Ill use them for non food item storage.
I've heard people say they don't like toothpaste tablets and I was always thinking like what do you mean? What is there to not like? You just chew and then it's like normal toothpaste. But I checked the one I use doesn't have baking soda in it so probably that's why it's not that gross. And yes when I tried lemon flavor ones I felt like it was candy too 😂 Peppermnit is fine and now I've gotten so used to them I don't even think it's a mint.
My least favourite thing is not a swap but an attitude of 'youre wrong and I'm right.' Hubby and I are reduced wasters. I've slowly been swapping over since 2003, as I find swaps the entire family likes. I don't like the attitude of not being allowed to have plastic. I spent my hard earned money on that Tupperware so I'm going to use it. I think it's more wasteful to get rid of the Tupperware than to keep and use it. I also don't like the attitude of having to have green plants everywhere in your house. We're an allergy family. Plants collect dust. Dust is one of the allergies in our house. I don't want to dust an unnecessary item daily. I also don't do zero waste or bamboo cutlery. Hubby got me an expensive, high quality set for our 3rd anniversary 25 years ago, so we take pieces from that set with us. To use what you have remaining of the laundry pods, try dissolve them in a small container of water, for a while, before adding to your washing machine.
I tried the Nelson Naturals Crush Brush mint charcoal tooth tabs and they tasted so bad. I might still try the regular mint flavour they have but I like my Hello tooth tabs way better. I found Tushy overpriced. Other brands make the same thing for way cheaper. Not sure how ethical those other brands are though.
As an autistic girlie with sensory issues, toothpaste tabs are my nemesis. Anything I have to crunch is a no no. I have frequent heartburn and I can even do Tums without wanting to puke.
Oml my least favourite swaps are bars, idk what it is but if it comes in a bar I immediately dislike it. Probably a texture thing but I have about 10 tabs saved in my browser constantly for when I can one day afford to get some zero waste swaps for things like washing up liquid or house cleaner lol Also funnily my fave swap is cotton pads! I'd love to try period underwear, but again, when I can afford them
Zamn i have the basic Tushee(I saw you installed one!), and me and my fiancé love it! My regret swaps are: -beeswax food container swaps, they left crumbs of beeswax on any food put in the bags. -Produce bags! (Not grocery bags, those are important) Honestly just put your dozens of apples straight in the basket/cart. Wash your food before cooking. I've loved most of my swaps, Thank you for sharing Emma!

i love that you're reusing! have you tried klean kanteen? they have a pretty small mouth
Why don't you get reusable water bottles with straw or sucking things?
My regret is patch bamboo bandages. They really don't stick well so I have to use three times as many when my kids have a cut.
woah really!? they are high on my list to try!
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist for an adult it might be fine, but my kids pick at anything that is peeling up in the slightest, and then they will not restick like other bandages. And if they get wet they are shot.
@@rvank8037 good to know thank you!
Toothpaste tabs are my absolute least favorite too. It never turns into paste and is just gritty. My teeth do feel clean afterwards and they work, but I will not buy them again.
you get it! it's sooo frustrating
Highly recommend those.
oh you tried reusbale period underwear, not pads! I loveee period underwear hahah
love the idea of toothpaste tabs, hate the lack of fluoride. also re: bidets - my Luxe Bidet has recently started acting up and I can't figure out how to fix it (the sprayer has become misaligned) and I'm rather upset about it. Pre-Dec 2019 me would not understand.
there aren't enough with fluoride!!!
You need to invest in a old fashion soap saver for you bar of kitchen soap
no im good. as i said, i dont like bar kitchen soap
Thanks so much , going to try the quip floss pik for my bf !
Please update us if it works with the organic material floss.
omg hope you enjoy! it does work i think i mentioned, you just can't physically put it in the cartridge position but it goes in the flosser justfine
yay!
I also hate bars. I prefer buying big bottles of soap and shower gel (here we don't have shops that fill up our bottles, so big bottles are the second best, unfortunately)
that is definitely a good option!
I had the dissolving issue with dropps as well and it was because I wasn't putting them in the absolute bottom of the washing machine. I wash with tap cold water and now they dissolve every time both the detergent and fabric softener. Maybe that could help?
i've heard that but doesn't make much sense to me since water comes from the top?? i'll try it!
Not sure what I can do with them now, maybe Ill use them for non food item storage.
i suggest giving swaps you don't like to someone who can try them :)
I've heard people say they don't like toothpaste tablets and I was always thinking like what do you mean? What is there to not like? You just chew and then it's like normal toothpaste. But I checked the one I use doesn't have baking soda in it so probably that's why it's not that gross. And yes when I tried lemon flavor ones I felt like it was candy too 😂 Peppermnit is fine and now I've gotten so used to them I don't even think it's a mint.
oh no i hate them all baking soda or not. they are SOOO gritty as i said in the videe
Where did you get the floss thingy please!!!!?
as mentioned, it's called quip :)
To use what you have remaining of the laundry pods, try dissolve them in a small container of water, for a while, before adding to your washing machine.
i feel that! plus it's just single-use that is bad!
I tried the Nelson Naturals Crush Brush mint charcoal tooth tabs and they tasted so bad. I might still try the regular mint flavour they have but I like my Hello tooth tabs way better.
I found Tushy overpriced. Other brands make the same thing for way cheaper. Not sure how ethical those other brands are though.
theirs are my least fav by FAR :( cannot agree more tushy is over hyped and over priced
Hi! I recently subscribed to your channel I feel like I've been learning quite a lot thanks to your videos :) Thank you for your work!
omg welcome!! thank you so much :)
Great video!
thanks :)
As an autistic girlie with sensory issues, toothpaste tabs are my nemesis. Anything I have to crunch is a no no. I have frequent heartburn and I can even do Tums without wanting to puke.
SAME!!! My brain also just cannot comprehend them I always think toothpaste tabs are mints and I try to eat them hahahaha
Oml my least favourite swaps are bars, idk what it is but if it comes in a bar I immediately dislike it. Probably a texture thing but I have about 10 tabs saved in my browser constantly for when I can one day afford to get some zero waste swaps for things like washing up liquid or house cleaner lol
Also funnily my fave swap is cotton pads! I'd love to try period underwear, but again, when I can afford them
I HATE BARS TOO! my only exception is shampoo hahahahha
Laundry pods have too much detergent for most localities. If you have soft water, they will be too strong for your washing machine.
interesting
nice video!
thank you!
Try me Mother Earth they have dental floss picks that are compostable. Wrote this before seeing your way of flossing haha.
I shold try it! I'm actually working for them now :)
Beeswax wrap. I hate it!!
sameeeeee
OMG I love that toothpaste! XD LMAO What didn't you like about it?
Zamn i have the basic Tushee(I saw you installed one!), and me and my fiancé love it!
My regret swaps are:
-beeswax food container swaps, they left crumbs of beeswax on any food put in the bags.
-Produce bags! (Not grocery bags, those are important) Honestly just put your dozens of apples straight in the basket/cart. Wash your food before cooking.
I've loved most of my swaps, Thank you for sharing Emma!
as I said in the video (i think) it was slimy and was not minty to me. I also covered it more in my toothpaste review video :)
i also hate beeswax wraps!
