''If you didn't think I sounded any good . . . . maybe now's a good time to find your next video.'' HAH ! One of the damn best comments I've EVER heard on a YT music video. Bravo, man ! You're for real, man . . . LUV your channel. You must have a dozen or more 'war stories' about playing in pubs, restaurants, receptions, and other odd gigs you've played. I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR SOME OF YOUR PIANO-PLAYING WAR STORIES, Michael. Do us a favor, make a video about 'playing out' . . . PLEASE? You're the BEST ! And, thank YOU for making these videos. I'm learning a lot, and also being refreshed on other points I've learned in the past.
Ah, thanks for the great comment! Really appreciate the kind words and encouragement 🙏 Glad you're enjoying the videos. I'm not sure I'm a good candidate for a video on playing outside. I'm not a big fan of playing outside too much and don't do it too often in the stuff I play and probably don't know enough about it!
Thanks for this, Michael. I've heard this called 'rhythmic vocabulary' whereby the choice of notes doesn't matter as much as the rhythmic variation and articulation. Your video reinforces that idea. Nice one.
Hey Michael. You have mentioned valuable information in this video. It's not about quantity of notes in solo or even perfomance. But feeling and how to use techniques to show musical message. I do enjoy and appreciate for your availability and skill to teach us that.
Oh man, i just got into Bill Evans with Scott LaFaro, and this video opens the door for me, as i try to Improv and let something loose the Style of „My Mans Gone Now“…incredible, instant goosebumps as i listen to your intro…gonna play the night away now, thank you very much, i found in your channel exsactly what i actually needed!
Excellent exposition as ever...With a simple great example of using constraints - limiting options - to liberate creativity. Same technique is used in "constraints-led" sports coaching.... to encourage robust skills acquisition ...DOn't tell the athlete what to do... let them find their own creative solutions by defining clear limits to the practice... and using things like Q&A to focus attention on detail (accent / articulation / variation etc) and review performance. Self-organised learning or in the lingo "non-linear" "ecological psychology" etc
Great advice in this lesson! Singing it and playing it is always better than letting your fingers try to find it, tempting as that can be! Thank you Michael.
'Phrasing, articulation . . . ' oh just so great to have your expertise and direction through these tutorials Michael. And the addition of the overhead camera on to your keyboard so that we can see what you are actually doing just adds so much more to the learning. Just brilliant! I'll be around to yours in the morning for a one-one - have the kettle on and I'll bring the biscuits. D's or T's??
I always love your videos and how they give me insight and inspiration to my own playing. I feel like I try to compensate for my lack of technical ability sometime by going fast and wide with the notes I play. You very clearly demonstrated that it's not how much you play, but HOW you play it.
🙏 Thanks Ben! I appreciate the kind words, glad it was insightful for you. Yes, that's something I hear often, too many notes when there's not enough to back it up. Scale it back and build it up. Cheers for the comment.
You're one of the first people that has made soloing clear to me as well as the video on stop doing triads. I think a lot of other videos don't take the time to explain the basics of what they are doing. It must have been difficult to figure out how to articulate muscle memory.
You're very welcome Josh, glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, sometimes it takes a little while for all that theory stuff to eventually come out of our fingers!
Hey Rickard, thanks for the comment. I'm used Nord Stage to dial in a Hammond sound. The Nord has such brilliant replica Hammond sounds. Glad you liked it.
This is great. Maybe you could consider doing more of these. Or point me in the right direction. My Improv is horrible. (kept it clean, I wanted to say far worse things. lol) Thanks Michael.
Thanks Bill! Glad you enjoyed it. I really think that rhythms and phrasing is the big first hurdle to get over to start sounding like you'd like to. Like I said in the video, I'd recommend finding a few bars of a solo that you really like and see if you can learn it really well - really well! Trying to absorb the rhythm and phrasing.
I use the vocalising of lines often, especially on tricky or unfamiliar chord sequences. It also helps to make space: you’ve got to breathe occasionally. Just be careful of going the full Keith Jarrett! Another great video, even for a guitar player.
My playing immediately improves after hearing the ideas and demonstrations in your videos
Perfect!! Just what I hope to hear! Happy practising! 🎹
Well worth paying attention to. Thank you.
🙏
My man! Back with another dope video!
Cheers Dan! Glad you liked the new vid 👍
Great to see a new video, Michael. Looking forward to checking it out.
Hope you liked it 🎹

Thanks for the comment! Yeah, I really think it's so important and can simply be the difference between a great player and an average player.

Waltz For Debbie is one of my favourite albums! Love that trio.

This may be your most thoughtful video. Outstanding. Thank you.

Kettle's on, please bring bourbon biscuits! 😂

Nicely done
Thanks Solomon 👍
My god, this is such a mindblowing video!
🙏 Thanks! Really pleased this video was interesting and useful 👍
Thank you for this. I know plenty of theory but sometimes I find myself getting stuck and repetitive in my solos
You're very welcome Josh, glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, sometimes it takes a little while for all that theory stuff to eventually come out of our fingers!
feel the same. That 4 note part (re)open my mind
you did it geniusly - lov' it. Furthermore, I am already benefiting from your tips in the video. Thank you!
Your videos are always fantastic! Beautiful ideas beautifully executed
🙏 Cheers Dave! Appreciate the kind words.
Great tutorial!

Brilliant. Thx.
Thanks for the comment! Glad you enjoyed it.
Amazing lesson!!! Thanks
Thanks Tomas, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Really curious about the organ/keyboard in your backing track, MIchael. It sounds just perfect for this.
Hey Rickard, thanks for the comment. I'm used Nord Stage to dial in a Hammond sound. The Nord has such brilliant replica Hammond sounds. Glad you liked it.
Thanks, this is very motivating.
Awesome, good to hear! Glad you enjoyed it 👍
You are just amazing!
🙏☺️ Thank you! Pleased you enjoyed it.
Eccellente, le vere radici sotterranee dell' improvvisazione.
Informative and entertaining as always, great stank face!
Ha! Thanks Ron!
This is fabulous, thank you. Would you consider providing some sheet music to some of the lines you played?
This is great. Maybe you could consider doing more of these. Or point me in the right direction. My Improv is horrible. (kept it clean, I wanted to say far worse things. lol) Thanks Michael.

How come this video has so few views???? Great content … as usual 😎
Who knows?! Seems RUclips decided not to share this one as much. You win some, you some lose some. On to the next one!
Хвала!

Yeah, not sure anyone wants to hear Keith Jarrett playing the noise moans and groans he's making!
