Thank you for these videos. Until today I was not able to properly stay inside the ball. I was watching a college player hit and he was able to hit a ball that was going to hit his hip with power and backspin. I figured out how to stay inside the ball properly. Turning the square helped me figure it out. I finally caught it in slow motion multiple times working properly off the tee! So thanks! Now i can look at that comment from a year ago and know it wasn't in vain.
Matt this is a perfectly timed video!! My son took some time off after travel ball and when he started with his hitting coach his hips were going forward just enough to pop him up but we started working on holding them back and that video shows everything we was telling/showing him even though it wasn't addressing what we was working on. Thanks again for doing what you do to help others get better!!
Have an 8 yr old that plays travel baseball and this is the best swing analysis I've seen so far. I coached a totally different sport as a career for 5 years and easy analogies (rubber band) often prove to be the best teaching tools. The KISS method almost always helps the proverbial learning "switch" flip on. Thanks for your instruction!
Thanks for the video. Your analysis on Mike Trout and Mookie Betts swing mechanics has helped me tremendously as well. I am a small guy at 5' 7" 165 lbs yet lately in my games I’ve been taking balls deep out to the warning track on college/pro size baseball fields.
I think its important to remember that it isn't actually the hands pulling back... the hands are starting connected with the back shoulder. The core is keeping the upper body back (which should keep the hands back) as the back toe begins the stretching of the rubber band as he begins his rotation through the ball. As front heel plants, the back toe begins and the use of the core (similar to the sounds you hear tennis players make) is what eventually chooses to rotate the back shoulder through the ball. This immense amount of rotation will create a serious whip of the bat around the body. Keep that core tight, use it to separate, stretch and pull in a rotating fashion. The faster your lower half rotates with a tight core, and the longer you can keep your core tight, the faster the whip around your body with your bat. Get on plane and ATTACK the ball! Thank you for your videos!
This is a well done explanation. As most coaches that know what is shown here is extremely important, it's another to articulate it to the player in a manner that makes sense and can implement. This was presented logically and in a manner that a young mind can get their head around. Well done.
Great video Matt. This is exactly what I'm working on with Max presently and Charlie to a degree as well. This is really the key in my mind to increase power and also to stay back and separated with the scap load to keep back for off speed pitches as well.
ANdrewGj yeah you see guys like Munenori Kawasaki and Nori Aoki, something about them allows them to constantly hit singles in the gap. High school players over seems to have that style too. I think it would be really cool if you discussed about that Matt. I don't know if it's mechanical or mental. Or maybe I'm just crazy haha
Matt I have some examples if you ever get a chance to see them. Idk if I'm allowed to post youtube links so hopefully you see them ruclips.net/video/hPsawaZk4_U/видео.html ruclips.net/video/lUWOFLPYqt4/видео.html ruclips.net/video/QWOKVx26tD0/видео.html
Coach Matt, I was wondering how these players are able to keep their weight back but you can see their back foot barely holds any weight, Mile trouts right foot completely comes off the ground but he still stays back in terms of his weight. Thanks
If you two aren't out there having fun and having memorable laughs then yes you are definitely failing. But I think I understand how you feel. I'm a absolutely terrible athlete but my son is an incredible natural talent. He outpaces and out-talents me at every father-son practice. My lack of skill is holding the boy back and we cannot afford personal coaching other than what he gets from our rec-league coach (who is excellent, but has a lot of other kids on the team). I feel like I'm failing my kid because I just cannot up my own game and knowledge quick enough to actually be much of a challenge for him. But when I see that massive smile on his face after every practice and hear him talking to his team mates about how much he loves batting/pitching practice, I realize that I'm not doing so bad after all
There is a big issue with his swing that could be the cause of his back issues. At the end of his swing, contact or not there is an extra twist in his pelvis from a hip thrust that causes a hard reverse arch in his lower back. If this isn't corrected his life in the majors is limited.
Every time I see someone trying to support the rotational swing, they only use high and/or inside pitches. What about low and away? This video shows his hands traveling down to the ball, but it’s only the slightest bit because it’s a high pitch. Let’s see some rotational swings on low and away pitches.
Definitely not a bad thing...As long as you maintain instep pressure on the front side and are not lunging, weight needs to transfer but against the front side so that it can then transfer back up to the turn. Like Daniel replied, often your back foot will either leave the ground or drag forward, ...it often signifies a full transfer of energy, the alternative is the old squish the bug where you aren't actually using the lower half but just spinning on it. The foot coming off the ground is a by product, for some, of the correct sequence of the swing, but is not something you intentionally try to do to have a correct swing... much like the drag line of a pitcher (the line in the dirt caused by dragging back toe again for some),,, but you don't teach making a drag line. I say that, but you also don't want to get planted or stuck on the back side otherwise you leave that stored energy you created in your load,,, back there,,, and not transferred through to your swing. If the swing is in sequence, you don't really need to worry about all that, it just happens.
Can you please do a video on what it is like being named an all star. At any level and what does the weekend consist of from a players perspective and if you receive any perks (like bonuses etc.) Join the lifestyle SUB to check out my awesome training videos and OFFICIAL COLLEGE VISIT. Btw great video very informative
I think swing instructors across the country should come together and choose the player with the absolute best mechanics and then teach those mechanics. Why bother talking about anyone other than the best? I nominate Ken Griffey Jr. Babe Ruth is as good but the video of him not good. What I see in Corea, in this swing anyway, is he's early and that causes him to throw his hands at the ball. Griffey, Ruth and the other best of the best at contact have their back arms bent at 90 degrees and tight to the side. Of course if this was a hanging curve that he blasted for a home run it's hard to say it was a bad swing. But still, corea's swing in this AB doesn't stack up to Griffey and the other best of the best.

Using this swing to get my golf swing right. The stretch and movement of the left leg through impact is incredible.
Also listening for the bang helps out
A bang doesn’t correlate to swing and mechanics
Also changing ur 4yr old tampon helps with saltiness Lmfao

Absolutely I totally agree!
Great video with great commentary!
Thank you for all your videos, super helpful.
Hi Coach Matt. Does the pull back of the hands happen simultaneously when the barrel turns? Does turning the barrel happen at front heel plant?
Great Video!
You should do Adrian Beltre! His swing is amazing! 😫
You should do Manny Machado video.
Thank you Matt.
My pleasure!
Super, can this technique be used for tennis?
I love this! Thanks so much
Thanks Matt!
Hey matt do you think the stros will win the world series this year
They did
Yeah bit they cheated
Porry Platypus lol just about to say that
I think it’s kinda cool because I’m only 12 and I’m learning all this right now.
You should do ichiro next. Japanese hitters have something unique with thier swing
AVX true

I think he is talking about powerful hitters, not contact hitters
Hi Matt, can you talk or explain why he’s staying tall instead of bending over like you talk about in your other videos
I would say that his spine angle is pretty similar to what I talk about. Thanks for watching!
Thank you

I’d love to be able to send you a video of my son. I’ve tried preaching this to him and I feel I’m failing!!!
If you two aren't out there having fun and having memorable laughs then yes you are definitely failing. But I think I understand how you feel.

Can you do a video on Brian doziers swing? His swing looks different than most guys
I'll try to find some. Thanks!

can you explain the lower half and how to finish high on the back toe?
I'll make a video for you! We do have a few other videos on lower half, but I'll try to throw another one up. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Antonelli Baseball can't wait! thank you so much
Can You Look and Break Down Matt Carpenter's Swing. Recently he's obviously been doing something right.
Sure thing!!!
So pretty much it’s hips first?
Yes lower half first, but the tougher part is figuring out how to do it
Matt Olson swing mechanics please
RIP
Marwin Gonzalez swing mechanics?
I'll try to throw him up here. Thanks for watching!!
Damn i thought i was swinging down at the ball turns out that's just how the bat path is supposed to be
6:25 - 6:29
I see his foot comes off the ground. That's what is happening with my swing right now is that a bad thing
Daniel I my lower half it looking good, I just didn't know if that was a bad thing. Thanks for the help!

Bryce Harper is King with getting separation. But his swing isn't very conventional
I agree!

Look how disconnected his back arm is at contact. Losing a lot of power there.
You left out the part about his technique for listening for garbage cans.
