महेंद्र सिंह धोनी ने संघर्षों और मायूसियों के बाद जीवन में जगह बनाई। सफलता प्राप्त करना उनके लिए आसान नहीं था। लाखों युवा उनकी नियति से स्वयं को जोड़कर देखते हैं। वे एक मध्यवर्गीय मानसिकता के साथ क्रिकेट खेलते रहे हैं, बशर्ते उनकी शुरुआती दिनों की फ़्लैमब्वॉयंस को छोड़ दें तो, जब उनके लम्बे बाल हुआ करते थे और वे लम्बे छक्के लगाया करते थे। तब वे टीम में युवा थे और उनकी ज़िम्मेदारियां भिन्न थीं। बहुत जल्द उन्होंने परिवार में बड़े होने की भूमिका को स्वीकार कर लिया, जो कुछ उन्हें सौंपी गई थी, कुछ उन्होंने स्वयं चाही थी। कप्तान बनने के बाद वे परिवार के मुखिया की तरह सोचने लगे। उन्होंने उसी तरह क्रिकेट खेला, जैसे किसी मध्यवर्गीय परिवार का मुखिया घर चलाता है। वो अपनी आमदनी और ख़र्चे के अनुपात को महीने की 30 तारीख़ तक खींचकर लाना चाहता है। धोनी ने भी हमेशा चाहा कि वो आख़िरी ओवर तक खेलें। खेल को अंत तक लेकर जाएं।
धोनी 49वें ओवर में छक्का लगाते हैं। 50वें ओवर में लम्बी हिट लगाते हैं। ऐसा नहीं है कि वो ऐसा 39वें ओवर में नहीं कर सकते या 42वें ओवर में नहीं कर सकते, जैसे कि टीम के दूसरे नौसिखुए खिलाड़ी करते हैं। किंतु यह एक मध्यवर्गीय व्यक्ति के द्वारा महीने के बीच में उत्सव मनाने की तरह ग़ैरज़िम्मेदाराना बर्ताव होगा। भौतिकी के नियम आपके अधीन नहीं होते, गेंद हवा में भी जा सकती है, आप आउट भी हो सकते हैं। छक्का लगाकर जो उत्साह मिलेगा, जय-जयकार होगी, वो आउट होकर मिलने वाली हताशा के सामने कुछ नहीं है। धोनी की विशेषता यह रही कि उन्होंने "वी वान्ट सिक्सर" के आवाहन को अनसुना करना सीख लिया। यह गेंद को बेपरवाही से हवा में उड़ा देने वाले सलामी बल्लेबाज़ की शाहख़र्ची नहीं है।
महेंद्र सिंह धोनी खेल की इस शैली को लगभग सम्पूर्णता तक ले गए कि "हम आख़िर तक मैदान में हैं, देखते हैं पहले कौन पलक झपकाता है।" उन्होंने लम्बे समय तक सफलतापूर्वक इसका निर्वाह किया। धोनी को आख़िरी तक प्रयास करने के बावजूद नाकाम रह जाना क़बूल था, यह क़बूल नहीं था कि कोई कहे, आप पहले ही आंख मूंद बल्ला भांजकर चलते बने। ये एक ज़िम्मेदार व्यक्ति का जीवन-दर्शन है।
