यह एक मिथ है। ऐसा नहीं है कि इस मिथ को बूझा नहीं जा सकता है, किंतु यह इतना सरल नहीं। यह अवश्य है कि नायकत्व को लेकर जो प्रतिमान भारतीय जनमानस में गहरे पैठ गए हैं, उन्हें धोनी स्पर्श कर जाते हैं! एक बार आत्मीयता के उस अंत:स्तल को छू जाने वाला व्यक्ति फिर भारत के सामूहिक अवचेतन में रच-बस जाता है। उसे अपार आशीष और स्नेह प्राप्त होता है।
महेंद्र सिंह धोनी ने आजीवन निचले क्रम पर बल्लेबाज़ी की। यह कठिन और धैर्यपूर्ण दायित्व है। ऊपरी क्रम पर बल्लेबाज़ी करने वाला शाहख़र्च होता है। निचले क्रम पर खेलने वाला बल्लेबाज़ किफ़ायती होता है। भारतीय समाज में अभाव, संघर्ष और आत्मत्याग के रूपक इतने गहरे हैं कि उसे धोनी में अपनी नियति दिखलाई देने लगती है। वो उसकी विवशताओं को समझता है। वो उसे परिवार के उस अग्रज की तरह लगता है, जो कष्ट सहकर भी सबके सुख का ख़याल रखता है। वो उस मां की तरह भी है, जो सबसे अंत में भोजन करती है और जितना मिलता है, उससे संतोष करती है।
ऊपरी क्रम का बल्लेबाज़ बड़ी पारियां खेलता है, शतक लगाता है, कीर्तिमानों का नायकत्व उसी को मिलता है। छठे क्रम पर जो खेलता है, उसके लिए करने को अधिक कुछ रह नहीं जाता, अगर ऊपरी क्रम ने अच्छा खेला है। और अगर ऊपरी क्रम विफल हो गया है तो उस पर ज़िम्मेदारियों का बोझ हिमालय पर्वत की तरह चला आता है। यह दुष्कर है। और महेंद्र सिंह धोनी भारतीय क्रिकेट में जितने प्रभावशाली रहे हैं, वैसे में उनके लिए यह बहुत सहज था कि वे चौथे क्रम पर बल्लेबाज़ी करते, 30 शतक लगाते और 15 हज़ार रनों के साथ रिटायर होते। किंतु उन्होंने अपने से युवा, अनुभवहीन और असंयत खिलाड़ियों के नीचे खेलना स्वीकार किया। वे इस सच को तो जानते ही हैं कि वे एक स्वाभाविक स्ट्रोकमेकर नहीं हैं किंतु यह भी सच है कि उन्हें आउट करना कभी भी आसान नहीं रहा है।
महेंद्र सिंह धोनी ने संघर्षों और मायूसियों के बाद जीवन में जगह बनाई। सफलता प्राप्त करना उनके लिए आसान नहीं था। लाखों युवा उनकी नियति से स्वयं को जोड़कर देखते हैं। वे एक मध्यवर्गीय मानसिकता के साथ क्रिकेट खेलते रहे हैं, बशर्ते उनकी शुरुआती दिनों की फ़्लैमब्वॉयंस को छोड़ दें तो, जब उनके लम्बे बाल हुआ करते थे और वे लम्बे छक्के लगाया करते थे। तब वे टीम में युवा थे और उनकी ज़िम्मेदारियां भिन्न थीं। बहुत जल्द उन्होंने परिवार में बड़े होने की भूमिका को स्वीकार कर लिया, जो कुछ उन्हें सौंपी गई थी, कुछ उन्होंने स्वयं चाही थी। कप्तान बनने के बाद वे परिवार के मुखिया की तरह सोचने लगे। उन्होंने उसी तरह क्रिकेट खेला, जैसे किसी मध्यवर्गीय परिवार का मुखिया घर चलाता है। वो अपनी आमदनी और ख़र्चे के अनुपात को महीने की 30 तारीख़ तक खींचकर लाना चाहता है। धोनी ने भी हमेशा चाहा कि वो आख़िरी ओवर तक खेलें। खेल को अंत तक लेकर जाएं।
धोनी 49वें ओवर में छक्का लगाते हैं। 50वें ओवर में लम्बी हिट लगाते हैं। ऐसा नहीं है कि वो ऐसा 39वें ओवर में नहीं कर सकते या 42वें ओवर में नहीं कर सकते, जैसे कि टीम के दूसरे नौसिखुए खिलाड़ी करते हैं। किंतु यह एक मध्यवर्गीय व्यक्ति के द्वारा महीने के बीच में उत्सव मनाने की तरह ग़ैरज़िम्मेदाराना बर्ताव होगा। भौतिकी के नियम आपके अधीन नहीं होते, गेंद हवा में भी जा सकती है, आप आउट भी हो सकते हैं। छक्का लगाकर जो उत्साह मिलेगा, जय-जयकार होगी, वो आउट होकर मिलने वाली हताशा के सामने कुछ नहीं है। धोनी की विशेषता यह रही कि उन्होंने "वी वान्ट सिक्सर" के आवाहन को अनसुना करना सीख लिया। यह गेंद को बेपरवाही से हवा में उड़ा देने वाले सलामी बल्लेबाज़ की शाहख़र्ची नहीं है।
महेंद्र सिंह धोनी खेल की इस शैली को लगभग सम्पूर्णता तक ले गए कि "हम आख़िर तक मैदान में हैं, देखते हैं पहले कौन पलक झपकाता है।" उन्होंने लम्बे समय तक सफलतापूर्वक इसका निर्वाह किया। धोनी को आख़िरी तक प्रयास करने के बावजूद नाकाम रह जाना क़बूल था, यह क़बूल नहीं था कि कोई कहे, आप पहले ही आंख मूंद बल्ला भांजकर चलते बने। ये एक ज़िम्मेदार व्यक्ति का जीवन-दर्शन है।
बात केवल खेल की नहीं है, जीत की भी नहीं है, आपने कैसे खेला, क्या सोचा, आपके व्यक्तित्व के आयाम कितने गहन और गम्भीर हैं, इन सच्चाइयों को भारतीय लोकमानस तुरंत चीन्ह लेता है और अपने जीवन के अनुक्रमों को उनसे जोड़कर देखने लगता है।
जो देश राजा से ज़्यादा संन्यासी को और धनी से ज़्यादा ज्ञानी को आदर देता रहा हो, उसके लिए फिर यह भी स्वाभाविक ही है कि महेंद्र सिंह धोनी जैसे खिलाड़ी को वह गहरे आशयों में अपना नायक मान बैठे!
