I really liked the fact that they didn't succeed but put out the video anyway

They should've flown a kite instead of used the rocket

Would it have made a difference if it wasn’t sitting on a trailer with rubber tires, almost completely insulated from the ground? Maybe the wire should go completely through the barrel and into the bare ground underneath...

Whatever slim chance there was of this actually working were dashed when they put the plastic barrel of sand in a trailer, insulated by rubber tires. Unless they wet the sand and had earthing straps which they didn't mention.
They'd have done better with a flat field and a long telescoping pole.

Rapidpanda1st I hope they see this and try again.

Lightening isn’t gonna care about the plastic and rubber, the lightening is gonna be 1000s of times the breakdown voltage of the rubber and plastic so from the lightenings perspective it’s an excellent conductor.

I’m very late to this, but I will point out that air is a much better insulator than rubber yet lightning easily passes through air because the voltage is so high. Therefore, it won’t have any issue with a bit of rubber in the way.

You're never too late on the internet. And yeah admittedly I was wrong in my comment; but this is how we learn.
I had the mindset of Steel = Bad insulator, Air = Moderate Insulator, Rubber = Good Insulator, which is completely wrong and born out of misinterpreting everyday use cases. Insulating rubber gloves are used because you can't make air gloves :)

maybe the clouds didn't have enough charge or they weren't flying the rocket high enough.

Couldnt you calculate that it would take 35 years before you wasted all that effort?

  • @strangeke7750

I think it didn’t work because of the insulating Barrel. Think it has to touch earth directly.

A good episode, but OMG the audio mixing is just godawful. Please realize that blasting deafening music over the commentary does not somehow make your show 'more exciting' or whatever you are looking for. Please freaking STOP IT!
