    On a brighter note, most of the animations now coming out of the Da Ge Mei trend have been steering away from the negative stereotyping! I’ve seen some really talented artists do their own takes and as of now there’s little to no issues.
    That being said-I’m more than certain that the first video I’d shown here was likely an act of extreme ragebait. If you end up stumbling across the OP, it’s best to just block and move on. That’s all!! :3

      @@toad-k Unfortunately I don't think they will, ever. It's a lot easier to hide behind "omg people are so sensitive nowadays", as if there aren't people who can't handle different ethnicities in large groupings, or as if there wasn't a huge civil rights act in the us under a 100 years ago.
      Honestly I don't think these people will ever learn, or care to learn. As long as they can convince themselves there's ""plausible deniability"" in racism, then they'll always resort to that. As a brown person, regardless of whether it's at my ethnicities or not, I'm tired of it.

    Hot take that might not be that spicy: regardless if a thing is Schrödinger's Joke (something that's no longer just a joke in spaces where the bigotry is more accepted) or simple ragebait, it's all bad. Racism is bad...now where are my flowers.
    Still, to be serious, even if it's ragebait it's still a problem. It's still hurting people. Who cares if it's to farm interactions, the root problem is why that kind of baiting even works on most social media platforms?! The problem lies with the people making this nonsense, and the sites that completely allow it (and even encourage it sometimes).
    It's not just a phrase when people say "it's 2024", or whatever the current year is. It wasn't acceptable in the 16-1900s, it's not going to be acceptable any longer into the 2000s. Genuinely, you have so sense of humor or actual jokes if you rely on a straw hats, yellow skin, lines for eyes, stereotypical accents, so on so forth.

    • @Vesperad0
      @Vesperad0 Месяц назад +13

      Kinda unrelated, but I find it ironically funny when people yap about humor no longer being "free" in the modern day. No, people just learned what actual comedy was, as well as unfortunately just now learning that bigotry in "jokes" does in fact harm real lives. Being entertaining or funny is an actual skill, and again I find it so funny how people who've never had that skill in the first place are complaining about people being "sensitive".
      Can't rely on the conversations you have with your racist family as jokes, gotta actually write good material. But I guess that would require too much creativity and skill development.

    Oh god as an unfortunate genshin player, you're so right about the casual racism against chinese people, even when the game is made by chinese people.
    Not to leave another comment, but I was heavily shocked when i learned people mocked Yun Jin's opera singing. I'll admit i was confused at first, i had never heard chinese opera before, but my first reaction wasn't to be _racist._ because that's weird. And wrong.
    Maybe it's just an anime fanbase thing, but in general there's a hell of a lot of racism in genshin spaces. The only group i dont see face a lot of bigotry is Japanese people, and that's only because people are japanophiles/constantly sexualizing everything to do with japan and it's culture. Which is still gross and racist, but y'know. For a game that somewhat parallels our own with different countries and cultures (albeit with a 'healthy' dose of whitewashing, colorism, and homogenization of hardly connected cultures beyond geography), there sure are a lot of racists playing it. It's gross, and the japan fetishizers seriously need to get a hobby or a personality, instead of sexualizing every single thing related to Japanese people-they are humans, just like the rest of us.

      I really hate the word blackcoded. What is apart of black code?? Like how does the way you act define your race?? And plenty of white people have thick textured hair that is usually associated with being black. Unless Misty’s race [idk who that is I haven’t been in the mop fandom since I was like 9] was confirmed to be African/black anyone can depict her as any race as she a pony with no confirmed race.

      @MerRants  Месяц назад +5

      @@__ocean_arts__ for clarification! Black-Coding, or coding as a whole in characters doesn’t just extend to curly haired nonhuman characters. Things like locs, braids, and other cultural nuances can be considered a coding! Especially when taking into account what other elements may be included in the character and their background. Though looking at the texture of the character’s hair (I’m not really in the mlp G5 fanbase) it doesn’t seem like a far reached stretch for the character :3
      Yes white & nonblack folks can have curly hair, but the texturing of said hair can determine the coding!! (If this makes sense 😭)

    This is kinda long so bear with me 💔
    Guhh lowkey I’m kinda scared to animate one of my ocs and make it public bc ppl might take them the wrong way and say that it’s a negative stereotype bc of the design choice, and not to mention the tons of r@c1st trends going around. Basically, I mostly base my ocs’ designs off of album covers, so I have an oc that’s based after the cover for the song Weird Bed &/or Yes Please, and one based after the Pinkerton album. I recently made a new oc based after the album Fashion Nugget, by CAKE. The issue is, his skin is yellow. I usually colorpick the colors from the albums, so he was either gonna have yellow skin, or jaundice. His eyes are NOT slanted or closed. He is in no way meant to be a stereotype, but I’m afraid ppl might witch hunt me for him having yellow skin. For context, he’s an American citizen, in the US Navy, and is of German decent. When I made him, I had no intention of him being a stereotype, I just wanted to base him off of an album I like. I think i might just change the album he’s based off of to avoid ppl calling me r@s1st. :( I don’t think ppl will think he’s a stereotype, but some might- 😔🙏💔

    • @MerRants
      @MerRants  Месяц назад +8

      If he isn’t of Asian decent then I don’t see it as a problem! In most cases if you steer away from portrayal of stereotyping in any way you can-it shouldn’t be considered an issue. Especially if you colorpick from album color palettes! As long as you clarify that, then I think you’ll be good :3
      Since yellowface is an Asian-centric stereotype, and based on your descriptions the character isn’t of that background, then the correlation as a whole is little to none. It’s a shame that this has to be discussed at all because of the preexistence of negative stereotypes and caricatures at all.

      @@Antonwalnuts Narrow, as in closed and obviously overemphasized. Monolids ARE a common feature in Northeast Asians. However, the issue here is the over-the-top caricature that is being presented in these trends. If it wasn’t obvious-I am Asian. Not Northeast Asian-but I have experience being generalized alongside other people who can’t tell the difference. People often “pull their eyes back” to weaponize racial features. And in this, the intent is obvious.
      Dark skin is not a negative trait either-but when overtly done in a way to flanderize and becomes a caricature, then it’s an issue. Blackface comes to mind when thinking of weaponizing skin pigment.
      And I mean this in the most respectful way I can: You are white. There is a long, deeprooted history in the problems of caricature and flanderizing racial features. And again: Monolids are common. When done correctly and tastefully, there is no issue with them. This was not the case. If you are doing it with mind-fullness there isn’t a problem with monolids.
