  • Allotment in a Box, ep 4: Beans🫘 Kathy @gluts_gluttony absolutely loves growing climbing beans - and who can blame her? Runner, French and borlotti beans are all delicious, versatile and the plants add fab vertical interest to your veg patch 🌱
Climbing beans are tender so don’t plant them outside untill all risk of frost has passed (around about the third week of May)❄️If you plant them out before then? Well, just don’t. Seriously! If you get your plants before that date, keep them inside or in a greenhouse, and pot the individual plants on separately, making sure to keep them warm and well-watered until they’re ready to brave the outdoors🌡️
When it’s time to plant out your seedlings, you’ll need some serious vertical support to cope with their weight as they grow tall (around 2m) and become laden with fresh juicy pods🤤 Kathy recommends growing up staked canes, leaving roughly 20cm between each cane! 📏
Are you growing any climbing beans this year?
