The fishpond mid-length nets are great. The slightly longer handle makes it easier (for me at least) to land a fish while wading, and isn't cumbersome on my back while hiking through the woods.

That’s my personal favorite. I’m a guide and do a ton of walk and wade guiding, so it also helps me with inexperienced clients who can’t lead the fish into the net. I’ve literally taken the boat net on trips with folks that you can just tell on the phone. Haha.

I have the same, and it works for the canoe and wading. Not perfect for one but works good enough for both.

      @Bonneville_Brute 2 года назад +1

Agreed :) The extra reach is clutch and it's really not cumbersome at all with the slot in the back of the Thunderhead chest-pack. Perfect for the float-tube as well.
To be fair, I am fixing to get a smaller hand-net for when I bust out the backpack/chest-pack combo. The mid-length is too cumbersome for that setup.

    This was a goodie.
I like to bring my net with me for photos and fish recovery, although I do note that fish can be pretty confused by the clear nets underwater.

The fishpond net magnet thingy is actually pretty good. I also have the fishpond summit sling pack, which has a net sleeve, but it's designed for a long handle, which most wading nets don't have. So, it's like you said, if you use it you're gonna look like a dork.

I prefer the nets with all the lead weights at the bottom, and they usually come with a handy retrieval rope. I find them extremely useful for landing several fish at once. Stay Huge! Oh, and my Nomad works decent too, just requires a bit more effort. You know with the whole casting and hook setting thing...

I’m the boat net while wading guy! I use it as a wading staff also. You know because I’m fat out of shape and have poor balance. Also believe it or not where my friends and I fish the most we rarely catch fish under 20” and having that extra deep bag to keep the fish under control is nice. We don’t fight the fish into exhaustion we “horse” them in every time most of our fights last less than a min From hook up to netting. Exception being big 20# carp. When the fish reach our nets they are still very full of beans and ready to go, rarely need time to revive. That long hand net also helps battle trex arm syndrome when fishing solo.

I use the Fishpond Nomad for wading. It’s mid-length, so still fairly short. Also I’m tall, 6’5 to be exact, I also have had two back surgeries, so not having to bend way over in chin deep water, with a wrist length net, is not an option, the mid length allows me to bend me knees slightly and scoop fish from the shallowest of water

You did not mention spring loaded net retractors you hang from that ring, neck high, on the back of your vest. I was walking behind my buddy on a narrow winding trail in the Catskill woods when his net snagged on a branch. The retractor's cable reached its limit and when the net pulled free it hit him in the back of the head with sufficient force to knock him off his feet, face down on the ground, momentarily unconscious. Hysterically funny sure but too dangerous. A situation best avoided.

In Olympics, there is an anti-doping test to check if the result is legal or not. In fly fishing I have seen many guides catching fish with the nets 15 yards in the middle of the current and the angler struggling 5 yards inside. That is insane. Except for those super rocky and stiff banks, i think nets shouldn´t be used. The fish can be properly managed without it. They are a must for boat fishing.

Am I the only one who just slings the elastic band that comes on the net over their shoulder? Don't need a fancy extra tool, thats just silly. I've been using some cheap Amazon offbrand net, it looks like the sort of thing a guy would make in his garage, but it was the cheapest I could find with the "large" sized netbag. Got it for steelhead fishing, but I have become "that guy" and I carry it around with me for trout fishing. Anything under 15" I'm just bringing to hand and unhooking in the water, and I found that the 'standard' trout net is kinda small for fish 16" and up, I've had a few fish flop the net, and it doesn't seem like a good size for them to recover safely in as they aren't even able to straighten out fully. So... I walk around trout streams with a steelhead sized net. Doesn't get used often, but the times I've needed it I've been real happy I had it.

Nobody will ever get to land a fish for me (unless I want to be nice/teach a beginner). I heard and seen enough superhero stories of lost fish, where it's the other guy's fault - no matter who of them that tells the story. Worst case was the nicest guy you could meet, being helped by the nicest guy you could meet - that never had seen each other before. Nice guy no. 1 had his largest sea trout ever (20 - 25 pds +). I meat him minutes after the incedent. he - the nicest guy in the world - could have drowned nice guy no.2.. Few days later I meat nice guy no. 2. He "would never help anybody ever again", and both explained to me, why it was nice guy no. the other one, who had all the blame. I prommished nice guy no. 1, that within 5 years, he'd have a bigger - and offered him to bet on it.. He wouldn't - so I somehow put a bit of hope into his mindset. He recently caught a( 23.8 ) I think it was) and that was not the first over 20 for him, so he survives. Do it yourself every time, so you are as experienced as can be, the day yu are alone with 25-50 pds of silver.. (my largest are 15-16 pds, and I never have had probems, and rarely carry a net.. And I will land your fish no matter size, and have never fooked that up either. Do it by the book - talk about, how to do it, while he/she is fighting. You hold the net - the angler leads the fish over it - lift adn scream of joy. Be huge.!

@@CONEHEADDK I have seen very similar . And learned not to trust anyone else to net. Dad pretty much knocked a fish off by hitting it with the net trying to get under the 20+" rainbow (20 years ago). Boat net was with him. He insisted on netting it . I wanted the net. Oh well. I really don't let anyone else net my fish since that. . I started fishing with a fly fishing guide twice a year, taking my dad , mostly so I could not drive the boat and actually get to fly fish. I had the hardest time letting him net the fish or remove the hook. He reminded me" you're paying me to do everything" I admit I learned a few things from him. Now he knows I know what I'm doing and doesn't mind if I remove the hook in the water. He had to get to know my abilities. He's much better netting than I am. More practice 😂
I rarely bring a fish in the boat. Wading I rarely use my net. Like land the fish properly.

@@MrNegative57 There are some pretty depressing videos of guides fooking clients fish for them. At least where I can't help thinking: "Are you doing that on purpose, bcz you know, these fish are stationary, so you can go pluck it, when the client is gone? A huuge salmon/trout. We see it jump. Far over 20 pds, as I recall the video. Bcz of a very bad back (can't even wear a vest with a few small things) I have, all I need, in a waist pack. Even a tiny gaf, if I should run into a giant. There are caught salmon up to 44 pds, where I used to fish. But since the first are the largest, and I've made a deal with "fate", to release the first every year the rest of my lfe, I will probably never need it. And I've actually become "that old fart", who doesn't really care (thought they were lying, and couldn't catch fish, when I meat one, until I grew into one), if he catches anything, or wants to bring the fish home. A pic would be nice, but that doesn't even matter much any more. Just swinging the two hand rod, laying a "prefct cast", no matter how much it rains or storms - I'm hooked.. :D

Ive trout fished for 30 years i guess. Never used a net before. Ive lost some fish but ive caught more than ive lost for sure. And i definitely dont use rubber wading boots. I do use nets in a boat but ill admit its that cheap Walmart one but they work and dont break the bank. Most fish a catch are going home with me anyway.

Shout out Frabill for affordable rubber nets. You can't flex on the poors with them like you could with a Fishpond net, but they net fish just the same.
