The tank I have has been sitting for 13 years with fuel in the tank. I've used vinegar and bolts, then learned there was a factory liner. I was about done except for a small portion of rust and old liner still attached. I've used diluted Muriatic for a few hours. I've used MEK for about 5 mins..... and still has a portion of rust and liner. Any ideas on how I can get a clean liner?!
Hey Shane...., great video. I'm having in issue with the tank off my 95 wideglide. Exterior paint is mint, but the inside coating is flaking off like crazy. Flushed it many many times and right now I have it soaking in the evaporust. The tank has a cross over line and the exits are really tight making it difficult to extract that old liner (oem). what would you suggest that might break up and dissolve it? Will the evaporust be enough? Thanks, Kurt
was that just duct tape around the top? I'm having trouble sealing the top gas hole on my 2007 bonneville tank. I've got everything in the tank clean except the very top. I'm not sure how to seal the gas hole so I can put the tank upside down for a few hours with liquid inside to clean to top. It leaks with the cap on. With my old Triumphs I just put an expanding plumbers plug in the gas hole, but that won't work with a modern Triumph.
I've used fat rubber plugs that I even siliconed in place and yes duct tape...it's simply risky and terrifying to think of a leak and ruining good paint. Here are the plugs: amzn.to/3PYukvF
You did not show the critical steps. Some of the other things you demonstrated were nice; however, the core of sealing a fuel tank is Evaop-Rust and then the 3 steps noted in the in the Northern Kit.
6:27 Use a dental mirror, or remove your blocking plate from bottom of tank, so you can show use how spotless the top half of the tank is. If you keep a tank FULL of fuel, less rust occurs, because rusting only occurs where there is air.
@@jerrybigrig9475 when there's not as much fuel in the tank for long periods of time? additionally flaking rust from the top can fall and it just sits there accumulating on the bottom.
Just curious...what about using a hair dryer or heat gun to dry out the little bit of water in the tank after rinsing? Yes, I know know it had a flammable liquid in it before but that should all be gone now.

Hi. Whats the best method/product to remove stale petrol residue/varnish from a fuel tank? I have an rc51 tank that has mint paintwork so i dont want to risk damaging this. Cheers
Hello. If its just varnish, I would not use this kit as you don't really want to etch the tank. Diesel and Kerosene fuels may work a little more aggressive along with fuel itself. Keep in mind your fuel pump and filter are located in the tank on the RC51. -I would remove the pump and hand clean (replace the filter of course). -Spray carb or brake cleaner up inside to breakdown any visible varnish -Then make a plate to cover up the fuel pump mount. -Then eat your Wheaties as your going to slosh the fuel around to breakdown the vanish. -Drain and reassemble Thanks for commenting and adding value to our community! @@How2Wrench Thanks for the help. After removing the fuel pump i can now see i do have a tiny bit of rust on the weld seam running over the top of the tank and on the filler cap neck obviously these spots weren't submerged in the fuel while the bike was sat for a number of years. i was thinking of filling the tank with apple cider vinegar and then neutralizing with baking soda but i wondered would the apple cider vinegar etch the tank or is it not strong enough to harm good steel? If it is harsh to good steel i think i would use metal rescue or evaporust. Cheers

Good idea these days. When this video was shot, there were not the inexpensive options there are today.
buy cheap "dental mirror," and use bright flashlight. Hold the flashlight near your eyeball and shine it at the mirror.
Can you line a carbon fiber tank for race fuel use

It would be a good idea to ask the manufacturer or whatever liner you wish to use. I would let someone else do the experimenting on Carbon Fiber and race fuel. There may even be different setup times and procedures as compared to the ones I demonstrated.
