I loved this video. I like the term "patchwork intuitive". It describes my mental process beautifully. I am usually a bit underconfident about my intuition. From now on, I am going to tell myself, "I am a patchwork intuitive!"
My professors have given me both kinds of criticism. One of them told me I lack mental focus, and another one kept trying to make me explore more ideas. I think my passion and hard work help me to make the most of the intuition I have.
I get overwhelmed by larger ideas or too many ideas and I need to sit down and focus on a small thing. And I think I need to take things slow. I am slow at processing things. And I need my ideas to resonate with my values. I can't engage with ideas for the sake of it.
Intellectual debates make me very uncomfortable. I listen to everyone and usually see a point in everyone's ideas. But step on one of my values, and I turn into the most stubborn person in the room. :)
Thank you for this video I loved it. I'll keep coming back to it whenever I feel underconfident about my intuition.

Glad to hear this video helped you, yes, I think jumping between 1-4 small ideas and taking time to sit with and process and deal with each one is ideal, getting focus but also fresh new inspiration periodically. :)

it is like you said Erik my intuition has always been in the middle and i would never use my intuition without considering it with my introverted feeling, and is true sometimes it is like i am better listening to sensing than only my intuition, mainly i like to use my intuition and sensing together with my feeling function even though it is not always right

Yeah totally agree Erik 👍🏻 I feel that exact way in feeling almost split down the middle of utilizing Ne or Ni. It almost blurs together for me when I don’t even realize which one I’m doing as I just love the intuitive realm as a whole in that it’s my favorite place to play. Constantly consuming info, experiences things, gaining a deep understanding, and also that big picture is somewhat of an addiction challenge with each new thing I come across - the more new, the better. However, with that, like you said it can get VERY overwhelming quickly which leads to mini breakdowns of trying to organize everything and then unfortunately can lead to giving up on those new findings never fully finishing them 😔

'Jack of all trades, master of none.' That is so me. Felt I was unintelligent, because I couldn't stay focused enough to develop the 'big idea.' I study, study, study passionately for weeks, months, years and then suddenly, one day, I get bored, lose focus and have to find some other idea that I can lose myself in and the pattern repeats. The best I can hope for is that my new passion is somehow connected to one of my old ones. Often, after many years, I'll return to an old passion and complete what I originally started; pulling in some of the many thoughts and ideas I've learned in the meantime. That's actually how I got my Associates degree, after like 10 years. I took a couple of art classes, loved it. Then I took a psych class, loved it. Studied interior design on my own, loved it and have dozens of books to prove it. Studied various languages on my own. Started with french, went on to study spanish, ASL, haitian creole and now I'm back to french. Not fluent in any of them. With everything I study passionately for awhile, get bored, then I get discouraged and quit🤦🏾‍♀️ Would love to be able to complete more things, actually learn one language. To actually understand what's being said to me besides: 'Hello, how are you. Fine thanks. How are you.'🖖🏽😃

Thank you for the explanation. I really liked how INFP stated as "jack of all trades", breaking the stereotype about INFP being dreamy but impractical to any ideas.
I do have ideas, but I still have the filter: which idea that can be done quickly? which idea that I must prepare for a bit? which one is that totally impossible and just use it for my daydream before sleep?
Also now I know why I'm enjoying short-term to almost any project (drawing/video editing/cooking/baking/temp jobs), because at least I don't have to focus for too long but still able to execute all of them.

"Lost in your intuition" That so aptly describes the process. I feel the deeper I go, the more possibilities I see until it's an infinite number of possibilities branching out from each other and it becomes overwhelming, like at that point everything swirls together in a dizzy mess. My mind has to retreat or else I feel like I'm drowning in possibilities.

I'm an INFP who thought that I had to rely only on Extroverted Intuition, and Extroverted Intuition on it's own is confusing and overwhelming to me. But now that I'm learning about Introverted Intuition too, I understand better my intuitive process :)

This corresponds well with my experience. I have allways missed Ni from the INFP descriptions. I'm mutch more philosophical than artsy/emo/hipi that some discriptions makes us ut to be.
I tend to have a few topics/interests I jump between, focusing on it for a wile and then moving on. Allso I need the energy and passion of Fi to do intuition. Ether if I find some new idé/fact I need to fit in to my worldview. Or if something collides with my values it can trigger a lot of intuiting and thinking.

Thanks for championing us INFPs! 💖 We get a lot of shit on the internet (especially from INFJs for some reason?), but your content is so supportive! I think its worth mentioning that when immersed in Fi (I'm talking no-holds-barred, pure yin, "floating in the ether of every emotion" Fi), I can experience a whole body knowing and clarity that is almost impossible to describe but leads to wildly prophetic insights and actions. So Fi feels more like intuition to me than Ni or Ne. It's so sad that so many people misunderstand the quiet power of wizened dom Fi. And it's even sadder than INFPs are often ashamed of it. If they only knew how powerful they are.

    • @Fikamar27
      @Fikamar27 4 года назад +2

In my opinion, I rather say that it means both Fi, Ne and Ni were working well together than as standalone. Fi is helping process the emotion when facing what Ne and Ni had. Ni and Ne can process which opportunities that suits Fi well. Include feeling overwhelmed with too much info, and choose to take a break.
Though too bad, as you say, we got shamed just because we feel "No that's enough, I cannot held it anymore", made us look equivalent as weak or selfish or crybaby.
It's more better if people see us as "trying their best not being reckless when having an opinion/opportunity."

I feel I need those big sweeping ideas and to follow thru on them, rather than being stuck in my little ideas. My little ideas require bring able to organize them and work on all of them at once, or prioritizing them, but I can't, which makes it impossible to take care of them all, often with the result that I can't move forward in my life.

I work the same way but you’ll find that you‘ve accumulated more useful knowledge than you think. If or when life’s circumstances force you to be decisive (and waaay out of the INFP comfort zone) you may surprise yourself at what a well developed and nuanced solution you come up with.
An INFP, my mind is often a disconcerting swirling maelstrom of facts and concepts. Quickly overwhelmed I take an INFP nap!
One thing we’re good at that drives others nuts is being able to backtrack and question our assumptions when the solution to a problem doesn’t feel right.
I’ve learned a) there's no such thing as useless knowledge, b) as a historic figure once said: you can entertain a thought without having to accept it.
From there it may be a matter of throwing yourself out of your comfort zone and force a well informed intuition to work it’s magic under stress.
Your solution may well blow the minds of both types of counterparts who, as Erik our host says, either want FOCUS above all else or the opposite. Combine them and the sum is greater than the respective parts.
      INFP’s shouldn’t be underestimated!

This confirms why I feel drawn to sensory aspects yet not an isfp.. and can sense energy while intuiting the big picture of any scenario. Literally able to define every character in a situation and yet will never tell people I see their weaknesses or trauma to protect them yet often feel my feelings were ignored.
Perhaps in a confusing way to outsiders we also shut down at times to assess the projection of others onto us.
I experience now having even a physical visceral sensation in situations. As a mature INFP, learning to listen to sensory instinct is something I wish I had develop earlier. Gut feeling as opposed to experiential intuition as in, let’s check all possibilities(‘!), even if they may be in reality, not best use of my time and potential, as an individual with my own hopes dreams and aspirations. My younger self was way too caught up with others needs and desires and the possibilities’ of others more dominant. We INFPs need to learn to say no and walk away from situations that don’t actually serve us in return.
Use your cognitive abilities to protect yourself and rely less on others ideas and projections to define you:)

I think we INFPs can be open minded and receptive with Ne parent, like you said, but I also find myself being kind of stubborn in different situations, for example when someone's idea or intuition doesn't make sense to me or seems to have flaws in it, my Ni critic jumps in and starts to poke more holes and I can be a bit serious in those moments.
But I suppose we are more co-operative than Ni doms, in that we like to bounce ideas and contribute our own theories or input with others. I find with an INTJ friend of mine, that he can tunnelvision sometimes in his Ni vision (probably also with Fi child) and be a bit close-minded, which can be annoying because I have Ni critic/Ne parent, and it's almost like my duty to open people up to more ideas. I've been thinking that it might be the role of Ne *parent*.
ps. notice how I use a lot of open-ended statements and use words like *probably, guess, might, suppose* I'm once again not entirely sure, and I'm guessing it might be because of Ne parent/Ni critic haha. I don't like to make absolute statements, and if or when I do, I still have the door open for something else.

I do actually feel very strong in introverted intuition (as an INFP) and I genuinely find it odd. By strong, I mean, it's my idea that 'things are going to be okay, this situation is going to have THIS outcome' and it often appears to be correct...sometimes I feel that my INTJ Dad influenced this, or all my INFJ friends. Or maybe it's somehow connected to my child Si. I'm not sure! Small ideas that add up is exactly right for me, Eric. The ability to switch from researching a problem to working out a solution has made me wonder at times if I am truly a infp, because I can put aside feelings to reach a goal. That said, the work I choose is that which benefits one or more persons the most, so feelings and values underpin my chosen focus, and it means I usually invent at a smaller, human scale. Makes me wonder if the scale would broaden if I thought of larger populations.

Adoption of my ideas is important to me; small things are easier to sell to others.

Hi Erik, just FYI feedback about your personality test’s criterion validity- I know you ask what people think their type is, so you are able to check for concurrent validity. On your test and others that I’ve taken more recently, I get INFP as a result, but when I was younger I tested ENFP. I have been interested in the reasons for this and have been seeking information accordingly. I like how you conceptualize the functional differences among types, and am open to the idea of shifting my own understanding, but when I watch your videos and listen to your theories, I identify more with what you say about ENFPs than INFPs. I am socially anxious and since becoming a therapist I use all of my social energy in my work and have become quite reclusive. So I have questioned my extroversion, but really I’ve always been an ambivert with external verbal processing. When I compare myself to the one very INFP I know, I have a lot less control and will share endlessly given the opportunity while he observes and listens. He does occasionally crack and show the weird fun world in his head, but mostly I see him as being in a shell. He is much more guarded. When I compare myself to two ENFP women I know, I feel far more reserved and inhibited, but I suspect this has to do with painful experiences during childhood. I was a highly sensitive child and had many formative experiences where teachers and peers shamed and humiliated me for being different. As soon as I feel safe, I can be a very free spirit. Anyway, so that information is to give context- I know that it would be difficult to identify me as an extrovert at this point on an assessment measure, but hopefully it is helpful feedback for you. I am a psychologist and don’t use MBTI in my work, but I find the work you are doing to be quite interesting. Thanks for putting it out there.

  • @orangeziggy599

So, Ne is doing the research, the gathering from multiple sources, with an open mind and curiosity, and Ni is putting it all together to formulate a theory and plan a way to put it to use in my life so as to progress and grow in my life and to help me navigate my life in a better way? So Ni creates a formula by combining all the disparate ideas, seeing how they can all be linked together in a chart, in order to be useful in everyday life, to help yourself to grow by creating experiments and then charting them using your theoretical chart. Then Ne applies this theory to the external world, learning as you go, seeing what parts of the theory works best and what fits together and what doesn't work, and also adding new parts to the theory.

I get that you mean we're maybe more sensing oriented than intuitive dominants. But you're telling an INFP who is scared of reality (because of pressure from my introverted sensing and extroverted thinking+feeling parents to blend in and obey society's rules and magic and philosophy is a waste from my father) and more idealistic and in his head. that hes more practical. hahahhahahaha :D :D maybe once i balance and develop all my functions more i can have some more practicality with my intuition and balance my dreaminess with more practicality. but i'm first and foremost a dreamer. lol.
But that was just about you saying I'm more practical and sensing. About the intuition. Yeah i have some of both introverted and extroverted intuition and I like using both and they're a little weird but going with whatever they show me :D I think I'm an NF subtype the muse like you said.

How do you annoy me so much? No matter what you say is good about us, you're still determined to make us inferior somehow. Well guess what. I don't think it's about who's the strongest intuitive. It's about who's intuition is the most useful, and I'd say that an infps intuition is the most useful, because we're not wildly distracted like a first function ne dom, and were also able to consider an idea as its own unique thing, unlike ni doms. An ni dom will delete information, because they think it's not worth anything because it's irrelevant to the pattern. As you said, an infp can follow the patterns and inspect the details. We're amazing. And yet you still have to end by saying we're mediocre because we're not all powerful in one thing. Well guess what, a person who is trained in only archery, can easily be beaten in close combat. It doesn't matter how good he is at archery. He's still dead. And he might've been alive, had he learned both archery and fencing, but he didn't. He wanted to be the best at something, so he chose to learn only archery. Now he's dead. The better person is the one who learns as much as they can and covers every skill.
